Travel Scotland - Tour of Edinburgh Castle
Take a tour of Edinburgh Castle in United Kingdom -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland's most important landmarks.
It sits atop a volcanic formation known as Castle Rock.
The castle dates back to the 1100s, when it was a royal residence.
It has withstood several wars throughout the centuries.
Robert the Bruce, a medieval Scottish king, stands guard outside.
The compound is now a museum and a national war memorial.
Edinburgh Castle is a truly breathtaking piece of Scottish history.
D9009 'Alycidon' bids farewell on 'The Albert Gilmour Memorial Charter' - 16/06/18
After 2 months of silence in heritage traction on the ECML, June 16th would see English Electric Class 55 No. D9009 'Alycidon' working 'The Albert Gilmour Memorial Charter' from Linlithgow - London Kings Cross, with D9009 joining the train at Newcastle, running the entirety of the trip's remainder on the ECML. Promoted by 52A Tours, the train was run to commemorate the passing of ex-Eastern Region driver, Albert Gilmour. His 48 year career on the railways included 26 years on Deltics.
The tour is caught at East Road level crossing in Langford. The train was booked to be running at 100mph on the up fast, and exciting prospect, however, rather disappointingly, when 'Alycidon' and her train hoved into view, it became clear that she was only travelling at 75mph on the up slow. This is supposedly due to the special running 20 minutes ahead of schedule by Tallington Jn.
Nevertheless, D9009 rumbled up towards the crossing, belching smoke from the 1650hp Napier engines caged beneath the grills. A little closer and the crew give two short blasts on the distinctive air horn before the train clatters past, the characteristic engines screaming before the train advances south.
It was very nice to see and hear a Deltic again on the mainline and I hope to feature 'Alycidon' or one of her sisters again on the channel.
Filmed on a Panasonic TZ60 & Panasonic TZ30.
Enjoy.
