A Ride From Stettler to Big Valley On The Alberta Prairie Railway 2014 07
The Alberta Prairie Railway runs from Stettler to Big Valley. It's a fun afternoon for the kids riding a big train, exploring an old time town, and even getting robbed! We had a great time on our ride.
July 1, 2017 - Canada 150 - Alberta Prairie Railway - CN 6060 cameo!
I was in Stettler for the Canada 150 celebrations, and to ride the steam excursion train from there to Big Valley and back. Afterward, I was able to catch the first half of the train's afternoon run before the sky opened up and dropped half a lake on me.
CN 1392 suffered a mechanical failure during my run. I'm told it was a failed water injector, and that it's a relatively easy fix, but it would preclude the locomotive from operating on the day's afternoon run, the July 2nd runs, and possibly the July 3 runs as well. If anyone has any information or updates, let me know.
UPDATE: 1392's engineer informed me that the problem was resolved and that the locomotive was operating for July 2.
Finally, I got a rare look at CN 6060, currently undergoing major boiler repairs, and a peak at her workshop...whose floor space is smaller than my apartment.

Chasing the Alberta Prairie Railway GMD-1 1118. From Big Valley to Settler AB!
The Alberta Prairie railway is located in the Central Alberta town of Stettler and runs excursions to the small town of Big valley to the south throughout the week. The line was built by the now abolished Canadian Northern Railway, which constructed the line off the Drumheller sub at Munson just east of Drumheller to Ferlow jct just south of Camrose. The line eventually connected up with the CNoR Mainline at Vegerville. After the bankruptcy of the CNoR and there competitor the GTP, the Canadian government merged the two railroads, as well as several other companies to create the Canadian National Railway system or as we know, the CN. CN operated the Stettler sub well into the 80s and 90s until abandonment. Today the Alberta Prairie railway operates around 22miles of the former CN Settler sub from Big Valley via Pratt, Caprona, Fenn, Ogema, Warden, Stettler, and Usher jct to the connection to the CP Lacombe sub. The APR runs former CN equipment, from there coaches to there locomotives. The trip takes around a hour to get from Big valley to Settler as trains slug out the light weight 50lbs jointed rail. Thanks for watching!

Alberta Prairie Railway Pulling Into Big Valley
We happened to be exploring the area around Big Valley, Alberta when we heard the unmistakable sounds of a classic diesel locomotive pulling into town.
Alberta Prairie Railway's 1958 General Motors diesel leads the way into town.
Of course, this isn't the first time we caught Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions in action. Check out the train under steam power back in July of 2017:
And, of course, you can check out our visit to Big Valley from earlier this year:

Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions
At some point during your excursion the train may be brought to a screeching halt. Look out! It's the dreaded outlaw Reynolds Raiders. They are known to frequent these parts and on occasion hold up the train. But fear not the Canadian Métis hero, Gabriel Dumont, is there to stop them. After a short but furious gun battle, the money the outlaws took from passengers is retrieved. Since it's impossible to tell who the money belongs to, it is donated to a number of children's charities.
