Australian City Pushing for Vertical Burials
An Australian city is pushing for vertical burials.
Resting in peace means lying horizontally - right?
Well, an Australian city in the Northern Territory is proposing changes in the Cemeteries Act to allow for vertical graves.
If the proposal is accepted the move is expected to save both space and costs. The process of burying the dead while standing was introduced in Victoria in recent years but it is not yet legal in the Northern Territory.
There is an additional requirement for vertical burying -- the deceased must be frozen first. An advocate for upright graves states You freeze the body so it is stiff because if you try to stand the body up and it's not frozen it will kind of wobble and move.
While some view the proposal as practical, other local residents think a better solution would be to just open new cemeteries.
In 2006, another radical proposition was brought forth in the United Kingdom as a solution to the shortage of cemetery and grave space. A government official proposed double burials, where already occupied graves would be reopened and dug deeper to allow for a second coffin.
What's your idea for tackling shortage in spaces for graves around the world?

The Victorian Graveyard at St Peters Church, Cooks River
The graveyard is Victorian, it encompassed all but the last few years of that queen’s reign. A National Trust report described it as ‘a sanctified oasis, set in the heart of what is now a highly built up area, it is a visible reminder of the tradition of the 19th century church and graveyard’. The first burial took place in 1839. Following complaints about the sanitary conditions of the graveyard and depth of internment, it was closed in 1896. Two thirds of the 2,515 people listed in the burial register are of children under the age ten. Those buried there come from areas well beyond the parish and from all levels of society.
