Granada, Spain: Albayzín and Alcaicería - Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite
More info about travel to Granada: The Albayzín in Granada is Spain's best old Moorish quarter, with its labyrinthine back lanes and inviting neighborhood squares. The Alcaicería, or silk market, is a tourist trap housed in a modern reconstruction of the original market – but it's fun to explore.

Granada Great Bazaar Alcaicería souvenir shops
The Alcaicería, home of the Great Bazaar of Granada, was originally a series of streets between Plaza Nueva and Plaza Bib-Rambla, bursting with stalls selling Arabic silks, spices and other precious goods. Nowadays the only remaining section is Calle Alcaiceria, beginning just off the Calle Reyes Catolicos, and extending back as far as the Cathedral. It is an area rich with history and local culture, still packed with interesting, exotic things to buy. These days the Alcaicería is home to Granada's souvenir stalls, selling a variety of Arabic craftwork, such as the fajalauza (traditional local painted ceramics), taracea (wooden inlay, in items such as desks, chessboards, or trinket boxes), and typical granadino farolas (stained-glass lamps). You can see a modern take on these lamps throughout the city centre; white versions are used as streetlights, and they are found as decoration in teterias (tea rooms), shops, and bars. The Alcaicerías stalls also offer ethnic clothing (a remnant of the original market selling cloth and silks), knick-knacks and souvenir memorabilia. Traces of the old market tradition can be found around Plaza Bib-Rambla with stalls selling Moroccan herbs and spices, fruit, silks and granadino trinkets.

Granada, Spain - Plaza Bib-Rambla, lively social center of oldtown
Full of restaurants, flower stalls and bars, Plaza Bib-Rambla is the perfect place to hang out and people watch. It is lined with lime trees that offer shade on hot days and you are likely to hear a band perform impromptu.
Located in the heart of old Grandada, it was once the Moorish center of the city. Only a few blocks away is the grand Granada Cathedral. We rented an airbnb apartment there on our very last day in Spain, so it was a wonderful, emotional way to bring our vacation to Andalusia to an end.
As is our custom, Ed did all of the video camcorder filming and narrations heard, while I did all of the still photography, chose the music and edited it all to upload to You Tube.

Granada, Spain - El Bañuelo (Ancient Arab Baths)
Located on the Carrera del Darro in Granada, these are the very old Arab Baths, not to be confused with the more modern baths, named Hammam Al Ándalus Arab Baths, which are located just one street over on the other side. These baths were an important part of the daily life of the Moors living in Granada at the time, who found water a symbol of purity and necessary for cleansing (many baths were destroyed by the Christians who viewed these places as being decadent). The day we went, there was no admission charge to this wonderful piece of Granada, Spain history, dating back to the 11th century.
As always, Ed did the video filming and narration, while I did the majority of the still images and then edited it all, doing the final upload to You Tube.
Market in Albaicin area of Granada, Spain
Granada, Spain - Plaza Nueva (main square of central Granada)
Plaza Nueva is the main square located in central Granada, Spain (located in the southern region of the country known as Andalusia). The square is very lively both day and night, surrounded on all sides by restaurants and cafes. A beautiful ornamental fountain dominates. Further to one side is an ancient public drinking fountain; also the Santa Ana Church dominates the scene at one end, while along another side is the Palace of Justice. A great place to hang out, people watch and relax; it was located not far from where we had our vacation rental in the old Moorish neighborhood of Albaicin, which which was adjacent to it.
Granada Grand Mosque | Walk Around Mezquita Mayor de Granada - Andalusia Spain
MEZQUITA MAYOR DE GRANADA
Hi, welcome to my new video about Grand Mosque Granada Andalusia Spain in Albaicin Area.
The Mosque of Granada is composed of three main elements : The garden, the prayer hall (which is properly speaking the mosque itself) and the Centre for Islamic Studies.
Please watch Camii Mosque Tokyo
The Garden looks out over the valley of the River Darro towards a vista of the Alhambra standing on the Mount of Sabika, etched against the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. It has two fountains of classical andaluz mosaic surrounded by plants of local Mediterranean species, such as pine, olive, pomegranate, orange and lemon.
The Mihrab, prayer niche which indicates the direction towards Mecca, is an exact replica of the famous mihrab in the Mosque of Cordoba. Panels of cedar wood from the Atlas mountains carry a hand-engraved ayat of Qur’an listing some of the divine attributes. The multi-coloured marble tiles are identical to those of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The great ‘Qibla’ windows are replicas from the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The mosaic fountain in the patio giving on to the prayer hall were manufactured according to a thousand year old andalusian design and technique by master craftsmen of Fez.
The Alminar – the minaret from which the call to prayer, the ‘adhan’, is given five times daily – is a tower designed and constructed in the original Albaicin style. Under the eaves it bears the Islamic declaration of faith in kufic lettering, ‘There is no god but Allah – Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’.
The Centre for Islamic Studies has a library with texts on Islam in arabic, spanish, english and other languages as well as audio visual aids. It has a conference hall with a seating capacity for 140 people along with an exhibition area. The main reception area is on the lower floor in the entrance foyer where a bookshop, craft items and souvenirs of the mosque are located

Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Alcaiceria
The Alcaicería, home of the Great Bazaar of Granada, was originally a series of streets between Plaza Nueva and Plaza Bib-Rambla, bursting with stalls selling Arabic silks, spices and other precious goods. Nowadays the only remaining section is Calle Alcaiceria, beginning just off the Calle Reyes Catolicos, and extending back as far as the Cathedral. It is an area rich with history and local culture, still packed with interesting, exotic things to buy.
Alcaicería is a name which was used all over Moorish Spain and parts of the Middle East. The Bazaar was one of few Moorish traditions to survive the Christian conquest; Bazaars existed not only in Granada but across the Christian realm. The name Alcaicería, surprisingly, has Roman origins: the Arabic al-Kaysar-ia means the place of Caesar, to thank the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, after he granted the Arabs the exclusive right to manufacture and sell silk in the sixth century. From then on, all Arabic bazaars were named in the same way.
The original Alcaicería of Granada was built in the 15th century, and survived until the 19th century, when a fire sadly destroyed it - caused, ironically, by a workshop selling Granada's first cardboard matches, which itself caught fire. A replica was built, but the result was more pastiche - the new Alcaicería was less than half of its original size, and was a cheaper, modern version of the Moorish style - neo-Moorish. As a result, after a comparatively short time, it is already looking the worse for wear.
Unlike the current Alcaicería, the original was home to more than 200 shops squeezed into a labyrinth of streets and alleyways. Each was very small and had a red ochre coloured door, which was tilted upwards to open (much like a garage door); when opened the door sat above the stall, providing an awning to protect the silks in the event of rain. The streets of the Alcaiceria were sealed by iron gates, to prevent guards and noblemen from entering on horseback, and were locked overnight to protect the precious goods and artefacts on sale inside.
