Segovia Castle - Alcazar de Segovia - Castile and Leon, Spain
The unique silhouette and privileged location of the Alcazar of Segovia arouses admiration in all who behold the palace.
The irst written record of the Alcazar dates back to the beginning of the XII century. It became one of the favourite residences for the crown of Castile throughout the Middle Ages. The accession to the throne of the Trastamara Dynasty meant a new thrust for the Alcazar of Segovia in all archi - tectural, institutional, political and symbolic respects. It was under the auspices of this house that the Alcazar was turned into a real palace. Queen Isabella the Catholic made her way from there on 13th December 1474 to be crowned Queen of Castile in the Main Square of Segovia.
The Alcazar was originally built as a fortress but has served as a royal palace, a state prison, a Royal Artillery College and a military academy since then. It is currently used as a museum and a military archives building.

The Alcázar of Segovia is a castle, located in the old city of Segovia, Spain. Rising out on a rocky crag above the confluence of two rivers near the Guadarrama mountains, Alcazar de Segovia is one of the most distinctive castle-palaces in Spain by virtue of its shape – like the bow of a ship. Alcazar de Segovia was originally built as a fortress but has served as a royal palace, a state prison, a Royal Artillery College and a military academy since then. Alcazar de Segovia is currently used as a museum and a military archives building.
The Alcázar of Segovia, like many fortifications in Spain, started off as Roman fort, but apart from the foundations, little of the original structure remains. A Muslim era fort, which was itself largely replaced by the present structure, was built by the Berber Almoravid dynasty. The first reference to this particular alcázar was in 1120, around 32 years after the city of Segovia returned to Christian hands (during the time when King Alfonso VI reconquered lands to the south of the Duero river down to Toledo and beyond).
The Alcázar of Segovia was one of the favorite residences of the monarchs of Castile in the Middle Ages, and a key fortress in the defence of the kingdom. It was during this period that most of the current building was constructed by the Trastámara dynasty.
The original interior of Alcazar de Segovia was badly damaged by fire in 1862, though it has since been partially restored. Today, Alcazar de Segovia remains one of the most popular historical sites in Spain and is one of the three major attractions in Segovia. Notable rooms are the Hall of Ajimeces which houses many works of art, the Hall of the Throne and the Hall of Kings with a frieze representing all of the Spanish Kings and Queens starting from Pelagius of Asturias down to Juana la Loca after moving to El Palacio Real in Madrid, Spain.

The Spanish Castle That Inspired Walt Disney
Located in central Spain, the Alcázar of Segovia is one of the country’s most visited and distinctive landmarks. Emerging from a rocky crag rising between two rivers, the castle’s nautical shape mimics the bow of a ship. Having served as a fortress, a royal palace, a state penitentiary, and, most recently, a museum and military archive, it's most famous for providing inspiration for some of Walt Disney’s most iconic films, including “Cinderella” and “Snow White.” Today, it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site, with visitors flocking from all over the world to witness the real-life fairytale castle.

Segovia's Alcazar has over a thousand years of history.
The current structure was designed in the 12th century.
The castle served as a royal palace until the 17th century.
It later became a prison, and then an artillery school.
The ornately decorated Alcazar houses many halls of art and military memorabilia.

The unique silhouette and privileged location of theAlcázar of Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the massive aquaduct and town of Segovia which both lie nearby, is several centuries old, though the location has been in use as a fort since the 12th century. Primarily Gothic with Renaissance alterations, it was originally a fortress (year 1122), but has also been a royal palace. The castle is surrounded by two rivers–Clamores and Eresma–flowing on either side. These rivers not only provide water for the greenery around the castle, but also add an extra layer of defense.
Most part of the shots are from the front view. For safety reasons I didn´t fly over the entrance of the Alcázar, where all the visitors are walking around.
