History
The area where Alcúdia is located has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, but it is with the arrival of the Romans that the city makes its entry in the history books. The Romans used the beaches of Alcúdia bay when they captured the island in 123 B.C. Shortly after this the capital Palma was founded and then the city of Pollentia. From Pollentia it was possible to view both the bay of Pollenca and the bay of Alcúdia. Pollentia served as a guard for other invaders. The city was also mentioned in Rome since they here produced excellent fabrics that were used in the most exclusive togas.
After Rome lost its position as the dominant power in the western Mediterranean, Pollentia was attacked by pirates and several times by the Vandals. Finally, the city was abandoned, and the remaining population left to create a new town at a more protected location. This town became Pollenca and the area where Pollentia stood was left to ruins.
After the invasion of the Moors, a farmstead was created very close to where the ancient village of Pollentia had been. The farm was called Alcúdia, which is Arabic for on the hill. In 1229, the Moors were defeated by King James I of Aragon, who overtook the power of the area. In 1298, King James II of Aragon bought the farmstead Alcúdia and founded the new town. A church, a graveyard, a house for priests, and a square was created in the same year. The construction of the walls was also initiated at the same time and finished in 1362. The city plan that was made at the time remains the same for Alcúdia today. During the Renaissance, walls were reconstructed, and a second wall was constructed outside the first one. This wall has since been torn down and only details show where it once was.
During the 16th century pirates attacked the city several times. The population became less and less and there was from time to time a risk that the city would be abandoned totally. In 1779 a decision was taken to support the city by constructing a harbour. This really improved the economy of Alcúdia and the village was saved. But it remained a rather small and poor village.

Alcudia Old Town Mallorca ~ Summer 2016
A Short Video Of Alcudia Old Town Mallorca Spain
Alcudia - Mallorca (Majorca), Spain
Alcudia is a town in the north of the Spanish island of Mallorca (Majorca). It’s known for its Mediterranean beaches, which include the busy Platja d’Alcudia and Platja de Muro on the sweeping Alcudia Bay.
The neo-Gothic Sant Jaume church is built into the town’s restored medieval walls. These walls encircle the well-preserved old town, which has narrow streets and centuries-old buildings.

The streets house numerous buildings of high architectual value are narrow ans irregular-a testimony of the city´s history.
The small alleys all over the old town is the best attraction of Alcudia. Most of them are peaceful and will give you great photo opportunities although some of them are very narrow and there will be always someone coming the other way :)
The most interesting among them was Carrer d’en Serra also part of the old Arab quarter

The old town of Alcudia used to have 3 different gates and hopefully you can still see 2 of them.

There is a market in front of Xara gate (at plaza Carlos V) on Tuesday and Sunday mornings (9.00am to 15.00) although during summer months it may also go inside the city walls too. The main part of the market is focusing on products by local farmers but also plenty of shoes, clothing, handbags and souvenirs.
You can walk around the city walls and actually see parts of the wall along the way as the can be followed on the inside along ronda muralla or outside.
San Jaume church
Market in Alcudia old town
Every Tuesday and Sunday morning there is a market. It is situated beside the city walls, but during the tourist season, it is also inside the walls, in some of the narrow streets. It starts about 9.00 am and carries on usually until 2.00 pm or even later.
You will find 2 sections, the main one dedicated to the local farmers where they sell their products.
The second section has plenty of stalls where they sell absolutely everything: shoes, bags, handbags, football shirts, souvernirs…
The things to buy on the market include locally produced fruit and vegetables, shoes, handbags, jewellery, clothing and souvenirs.
