Aldeburgh Train, 1960's - Film 18809
A film relating to the last day of railway service through Aldeburgh, Suffolk, and its neighbouring communities. The film surveys each station along the line, before following the diesel railcar on its final journey. One principal feature of the film is the sense of decay of railway fittings and fixtures, conveying a sense of under-use, though large crowds turn out to greet the final journey.
A distant view of a railway station. The platform name-board says that it is Aldeburgh, and the camera pans left to show the signal-box at the platform's end, a diesel railcar approaches on the track alongside. Two smart-looking railway employees, with shirt, jacket and hat, are greeted by a third man. He presents the men with a cup, and they turn to enter the station.
LAST TRAIN FROM ALDEBURGH, September 10th. 1966. Saxmundham - Leiston - Thorpeness - Aldeburgh. (8 miles) Opened 12th. April 1860. Another view of the station name-plate. A panning view of the site, showing a high platform wall, and overgrown weeds in the foreground; the station is empty. A side-on view of the deserted platform. A nameboard on a worn wall hangs below a decrepit-looking lamp, panning down to show the station entrance; a railwayman stands by the door, and a 1950's car is parked outside. Another view of the lamp, with a rusty chain hanging from it, pans down to a sign stating The Railway Executive, WARNING is Hereby given to persons not to trespass upon the railway PENALTY not exceeding 40/-. Three buckets are hooked upon the wall, upon which their shadow is cast by the sun. A number of wooden trolleys propped forlornly on a wooden fence, against a rural backdrop of trees and greenery. A broken wooden bench is seen. An iron knocker in the shape of a fist and a ram's head is shown. A lamp-post without a lamp rusts. A second post does likewise.
Aldeburgh 1902 to 1926
A short movie of aldeburgh showing photos of the Coronation party in the high street in 1902, the burning of the golf club 1910, the beach, the mere before trees, slaughden with the three mariners pub (washed away in 1953 floods)and Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson as Mayor - she was the first female doctor in the UK and also the first female mayor.
See also the film of the Aldeburgh to Saxmundham railway which mentions the garrett family of which Elizabeth was a member. The Garrets had also owned the Snape Maltings, which became home to the internationally renowned Aldeburgh festival started by Benjamin Britten.
