Ancient City of Aleppo (UNESCO/NHK)
Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation.

Citadel of Aleppo, Syria
The Citadel is a large fortification on a hill in the centre of Aleppo, Syria. The site started as a religious centre in the 3rd millennium but then developed as a strongly defended location. Most of the current buildings date from the early thirteenth century though there was some reconstruction in the 15th. I filmed this in December 2010. traveltalesandnotes.blogspot.com
Aleppo Citadel in Aleppo, Syria
The Citadel of Aleppo is a large medieval fortified palace in the centre of the old city of Aleppo, northern Syria. It is considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. Usage of the Citadel hill dates back at least to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. Subsequently, occupied by many civilizations including the Greeks, Byzantines, Ayyubids and Mamluks, the majority of the construction as it stands today is thought to originate from the Ayyubid period. An extensive conservation work took place in the 2000s by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in collaboration with Aleppo Archeological Society. Dominating the city, the Citadel is part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The Citadel received significant damage during the Battle of Aleppo. It was reopened to the public in early 2017 with repairs to damaged parts underway.
There are many structural remains inside the citadel. Notable sites include:
Entrance block
The enormous stone bridge constructed by Sultan Ghazi over the moat led to an imposing bent entrance complex. Would-be assailants to the castle would have to take over six turns up a vaulted entrance ramp, over which were machicolations for pouring hot liquids on attackers from the mezzanine above. Secret passageways wind through the complex, and the main passages are decorated with figurative reliefs. The Ayyubid block is topped by the Mamluk Throne Hall, a hall where Mamluk sultans entertained large audiences and held official functions.
Ayyubid Palace and Hammam
Ghazi's palace of glory burned down on his wedding night, but it was later rebuilt and today stands as one of the most important and impressive monuments in the citadel crown. The Ayyubids were not the first to build a palace on the citadel. Today, numerous architectural details remain from the Ayyubid period, including an entrance portal with muqarnas, or honeycomb vaulting, and a courtyard on the four-iwan system, with tiling.
Laid out in traditional medieval Islamic style, the palace hammam has three sections. The first was used for dressing, undressing, and resting. The second was an unheated but warmer room, and this was followed by a hot room, and a steam room equipped with alcoves. Hot and cold water was piped through to the hammam with earthenware pipes.
Satura, Hellenistic Well, and underground passages
The construction in the citadel was not confined to above-ground. Several wells penetrate down to 125 m below the surface of the crown. Underground passageways connect to the advance towers and possibly under the moat to the city.

Aleppo (Syria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Aleppo in Syria.
Sturdy walls and gates protect the ancient historic city of Aleppo in Syria. The narrow lanes in the old town, and its many historic buildings, have retained all the character and charm of a mediaeval metropolis. The city has a flourishing economy which is mainly due to its favourable location at the junction of several important trading routes. In 1169 the Umayyade Mosque was re-built at the command of the Zengid monarch, Nureddin, but only its impressive forty five metre high minaret has survived to the present day. The Baits are true architectural gems of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, noble and often palatial-looking buildings that once belonged to the city’s elite classes. Today Aleppo shines out once again in the glory of its six thousand years of history and continues to highlight its unique significance as one of the most important cities in the Orient.

One of the oldest and largest castles in the world, the Citadel of Aleppo, has reopened for visitors following the liberation of the northern Syrian city from militants in December, as shown by footage on Saturday.
Russian soldiers were amongst the the first tourists to take in the sights of the Citadel together with locals from Aleppo. The Citadel is a part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, which has been a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site since 1986. Usage of the Citadel has been traced back to at least the 3rd millennium BC.

Aleppo/Syria
Aleppo is the largest city in Syria[3] and the capital of Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2,301,570 (2005 official estimate), expanding to over 2.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant.[4][5] For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo.[6][7][8] Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppo is distinct in identity, architecture and culture, all shaped by a markedly different history and geography.
Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC.[9] Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC;[10] and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency.[11] Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia.
The city's significance in history has been its location at the end of the Silk Road, which passed through central Asia and Mesopotamia

This was the hardest video I've ever made.
I've spent the last 2 days in the Northern Syrian city of Aleppo, which was once a hotspot on the ancient Silk Road and the economic and cultural capital of Syria... until the war destroyed this city into pieces beginning in 2012.
Literally, as I walked around Aleppo, I have never seen so much destruction in my entire life. Schools, hospitals, apartment complexes, parks, markets are left in ruins. It has been really hard to witness.
BUT, reconstruction of Aleppo is now in full swing, and that's what I have decided to focus on in this video. The markets are coming back to life, the street vendors are out, and shop owners are remodeling their stores to how they used to be a decade ago. Have I mentioned that Aleppo cuisine is considered the best in Syria (and trust me, it's the truth!)
Also -- the Aleppo Citadel (the oldest in the world) still remains in great shape and it was wonderful to explore, and see the 360 degree view of the city from the top.
If you enjoyed this video, I encourage you to share it with your friends and family. Get the word spread out that Syria is coming back, stronger than ever. More to come tomorrow!

ALeppo Citadel after war 09.09.2018 from London back to Aleppo قلعة حلب بعد الحرب ٢٠١٨.٠٩.٠٩
After 6 years since I left Aleppo and now living in London I’ve returned to see my hometown and my people. We’ve all seen the destruction on the news but nothing can compare to seeing the devastation in real life; especially when you grew up here and know what it was like before. At the same time life is continuing and people are trying to move on. There’s a distinct mix of intense sadness yet hope in the air and we can all pray for a better future for Aleppo and it’s people who are so close to my heart

The historic citadel of Aleppo has, once again, become a bustling hub in the city centre after years of war left its streets vacant and its homes in ruins, as seen in footage filmed on Sunday.
During the Battle of Aleppo, the citadel was not spared, sustaining catastrophic damage and leaving the UNESCO world heritage site in ruins.
