Syria: Aleppo museum reopens after years-long closure

The National Museum of Aleppo has reopened in the Syrian city on Thursday, following its closure in 2012 amid heavy clashes.
The museum was founded in 1931, occupying a small Ottoman palace. Following the Directorate of Antiquities' decision, the palace was dismantled and replaced with a modern structure some three decades later. The museum hosts items from many historical periods, including the Late Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the classical period. The museum also exhibits finds from numerous archaeological sites, including those from northern Syria.
Member of the Heritage Committee in the Engineers' Association of Aleppo, Mohammad Ismail Ahmad, said that it is a very nice occasion today that the museum is back to work after the destruction that took place in most important locations of Aleppo.
The museum is the place where civilisations in Syria meet, adding that it is a museum for the north of Syria entirely.
The Aleppo museum suffered significant structural damage, including a partial destruction of the concrete roof, after being targeted by numerous missiles and mortars, allegedly fired by militants.

Syria's old Aleppo markets revived after devastation
Life is emerging again in Aleppo as Syrians decided to rebuild the city's old markets.
Destruction and Western sanctions didn't discourage the people from rebuilding with a strong will.
One of the rebuilt markets is al-Saqatiyah souk, a part of an area listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
Re-opened in October this year, Shop owners can continue their businesses after years of closing.

Idrimi: a 3,500-year-old refugee from Aleppo | Curator's Corner Season 2 Episode 5
Idrimi was a refugee who fled Aleppo in Syria about 3,500 years ago – the same Aleppo so often in the news today. Later, as a much older man, Idrimi had this statue made of himself, with his life story written across the front, literally from head to foot. This extraordinary story is inscribed in the wedge-shaped cuneiform script of the ancient Middle East, and it is one of the earliest (and most interesting) political autobiographies ever found.

Syria: Priceless vintage car collection becomes latest victim of Aleppo battle
Seventy-year-old Mohammad Mohiedine Anis showed of his now defunct collection of vintage cars in Aleppo, Sunday, presenting what was once a glorious fleet of pristine classic automobiles, now devastated by the Syrian conflict.
Formerly able to boast some 30 stunning retro models from the Forties and Fifties, Anis now only has 20 of his cars left, with the line-up depleted by fighting between anti-government fighters and Syrian forces.
Each model reportedly cost up to $10,000 (€9,351) a piece, with Anis taking a special interest in vintage vehicles previously owned by noted Syrian celebrities and public figures. Due to the retro-vibe of the automobiles, many of the cars in his collection were used in Syrian films.
SOT, Mohammad Mohiedine Anis, Vintage car collector (Arabic): I used to have 1950 and 1947 model cars, since 20 years ago I had this hobby of collecting cars. The first one I bought was an orange Deux Chevaux. My goal is to have a museum in Aleppo for old cars. I have been to the Torino [Turin] museum in Italy and was really impressed. I spent a day in there and felt like it was only an hour. So my aim was to collect 30 cars and open a museum, but at the moment everything stopped and I won't be able to open this museum. Maybe just a personal museum for me and my kids. I will repair the cars as much as is possible. In the Nara convention in Japan, they said that Human beings produce non materialistic things like books and sometimes materialistic things, which we can protect and take care of for the next generations. For instance, I have cars that are 60 and 70 years old.
SOT, Mohammad Mohiedine Anis, Vintage car collector (Arabic): I want to say to the new generations that old cars, which are more than 100 years old, can be very useful for them, like for people who study car designs, or for people who study the history of cars.

ALEPPO, SYRIA | What's It Like to Be a Tourist in ALEPPO in 2019?
Travelling to Aleppo was one of the toughest travel experiences I've had. The city and the people who call it home have gone through a nightmare in recent years.
I'm very lucky to have been able to visit Aleppo as an independent, foreign traveller and I hope that this video can convey some of what I experienced there, from my personal perspective.
Please note: this vlog documents my personal trip to Syria, as a tourist. It is not necessarily a travel recommendation, nor a commentary on the political climate, nor an attempt to show the ordinary life of Syrian citizens.

Historic Umayyad mosque damaged in Aleppo
(23 Jan 2017) The Great Mosque of Aleppo, a centuries-old treasure at the heart of one of the world's oldest cities, is today a grim monument to the ravages of Syria's war.
The doors have been blasted away, the walls have been shredded by gunfire and shrapnel, and the minaret where the Muslim call to prayer sounded for 900 years has been toppled and shattered.
The wooden pulpit, along with ancient manuscripts from a nearby library, has been carted off by looters.
Syrians are only now able to survey the damage wrought by more than four years of war.
Rebels from the countryside poured into Aleppo in the summer of 2012, capturing eastern districts and transforming the Old City into the front lines of a war of attrition with forces loyal to President Bashar Assad.
The rebels surrendered last month after a massive government offensive and were evacuated to other areas, allowing Assad to regain control of the country's largest city.
The red carpets inside the mosque are covered in debris, while damaged copper chandeliers are still hanging from the ceiling.
An extensive network of sandbags used by the rebels snakes throughout the compound.
Also known as the Umayyad Mosque, the site was reopened in 2006 after a 20-year renovation project.
Aleppo's Old City, a UNESCO world heritage site, also boasts a 13th century citadel, a sprawling bazaar and several other monuments, nearly all of which have been damaged or destroyed.
Before the rebels stormed the city, the state built a cement wall to secure a tomb inside the mosque believed to hold the remains of the Prophet Zakariah.
But an ornate wooden pulpit modelled on the one inside Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque was pillaged.
Sheikh Abdul-Qader Shehabi, a senior Muslim cleric who spent years studying and working in the Umayyad Mosque, said 70,000 books were stolen from a nearby library, including copy of the Quran transcribed in the Middle Ages, which he says was smuggled out and sold in Turkey for 250,000 US dollars.
Khaled al-Masri, director of museums and antiquities in Aleppo, downplayed the extent of the destruction, saying the mosque could be repaired within a year and the minaret could be rebuilt in three.
But the war is still raging elsewhere in the country, and even if the cash-strapped government prevails it will confront a massive reconstruction challenge , not only in Aleppo but in other cities and towns.
