Jungfraujoch and Aletsch glacier - Best video in 4 K
Jungfraujoch is a notable saddle in the Bernese Alps, connecting the two four-thousander peaks Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 metres (11,371 ft) above sea level. It is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, situated on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch.
Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch has been accessible to tourists by the Jungfrau line, a railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, running partly underground through a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch. The Jungfraujoch railway station, at an elevation of 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) is the highest in Europe. It lies east of the saddle, below the Sphinx station, and is connected to the Top of Europe building, which includes several panoramic restaurants and a post office. Several tunnels lead outside, where secured hiking trails on the crevassed glacier can be followed, in particular to the Mönchsjoch Hut.
The Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, provides an additional viewing platform at a height of 3,572 metres (11,719 ft). It can be reached by an elevator from the Jungfraujoch. The observatory houses one of the Global Atmosphere Watch's atmospheric research stations. The Jungfraujoch radio relay station, which is not accessible to the public, is installed west of the Jungfraujoch, on the Jungfrau ridge. It is Europe's highest radio relay station.
Hiking Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland
In 2012, I did a 3-day ice hike on the longest glacier in the Alps--the Aletschgletscher (24 km long). Here's a quick video recap of the adventure, which was truly a highlight of my journey through Switzerland. Many thanks to my guide Kilien Volken for leading me through such a beautiful-yet-hazardous landscape.
Tips & Things to do in the Jungfrau Region, Switzerland (Winter edition)
The Swiss Alps is where it's at in winter so I teamed up with SnowTrex to check out the ski resorts and things to do in the Jungfrau Region to give you some tips for your next holiday in Switzerland

I flew down to Zürich and took a train to get into the mountains with Grindelwald being my first stop. The location of Grindelwald is very unique providing one of the most stunning panoramas in Switzerland as it faces the mountains of Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. The ski area of Grindelwald-First offers some of the best views - especially from the breathtaking First Cliff Walk…but it is also a good spot to try the hearty Swiss cuisine before hitting the slopes again and finish it all off with some proper after ski drinks at the mountain huts or the Bus Stop bar.
From Grindelwald we took the Jungfraubahn train to the Jungfraujoch aka the „Top of Europe“ on 2571m where the highest railway station is located. The Jungfraujoch offers an outstanding view to the Aletsch glacier and the surrounding Alps from the viewing platform at the Sphinx observatory. But you can even go inside the glacier if you visit the ice palace underneath the building!
I finished this trip with a skiing day in the ski area of Hasliberg-Meiringen just a 2h picturesque train ride from Grindelwald.
As always feel free to leave more recommendations in the comment section below for future visitors of the Jungfrau Region as I only focussed on the highlights in this part of Switzerland.
Following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in the Jungfrau Region:
- Grindelwald-First
- First Cliff Walk
- Bergrestaurant First
- Bus Stop Bar Grindelwald
- Avocado Bar Grindelwald
- Barry’s Grindelwald
- Jungfraubahn from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch

Ice Palace, Jungfraujoch in Switzerland
A large complex of tunnels and buildings has been constructed at the Jungfraujoch, mostly into the south side of the Mönch. There is a hotel, two restaurants, an observatory, a research station, a small cinema, a ski school, and the Ice Palace, a collection of elaborate ice sculptures. Another tunnel leads outside to a flat, snow-covered area, where one can walk around and look down to the Konkordiaplatz and the Aletsch Glacier, as well as the surrounding mountains.

Tip:
A great way to experience the immense sea of ice is on a guided glacier walk.Detailed information about the glacier and the most liberating nature experience of the Alps can also be found at Glacierworld Bettmerhorn multimedia exhibition and at the Pro Natura Center Aletsch.
How glaciers shape the landscape
The Great Aletsch Glacier has shaped the landscape of the Aletsch Arena over thousands of years. During the last ice age (around 18,000 years ago), ice still covered the mountain ridges between the Bettmerhorn and the Riederhorn; only the peaks rose above the ice. How do we know? The landscape tells us: the area that was then covered by ice is smooth and rounded, but the shapes of the Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn are sharp and jagged.
We can also trace how the Great Aletsch Glacier has grown and receded in the landscape of the Aletsch Forest. Around 11,000 years ago, the terminus of the glacier was in the Rhône Valley and the glacier's edge reached almost as far as Riederfurka. The immense lateral moraine that was formed in the process is clearly visible from the moraine trail. The maximum extension of the Great Aletsch Glacier to date was around 1860. At that time, it was around 3 km longer than it is today and the edge of the glacier was a good 200 m higher, near the Aletsch Forest. This area still stands out against the surrounding countryside as a light strip of land with fairly young vegetation.
Did you know:
When two glaciers merge, the lateral moraines join and form a medial moraine. As three large firn fields meet at Concordia, the Great Aletsch Glacier has in fact two medial moraines. These appear as dark lines running along the length of the glacier. Looking in the direction of flow, the glacier's right-hand medial moraine is the Kranzberg medial moraine and the left-hand medial moraine is the Trugberg medial moraine.
The effects of climate change
Global warming is also affecting the Aletsch Arena's ice sea to a concerning extent. Measurements by the Pro Natura Center Aletsch show that the Great Aletsch Glacier is experiencing dramatic ablation, shrinking by up to 50 metres in length each year and retreating significantly at the edges.
The Great Aletsch Glacier: facts and figures
Length
23 km – making the Great Aletsch Glacier the longest in the Alps.
Surface area
86 km2; Concordia – where the Grosser Aletschfirn, Jungfraufirn, Ewigschneefeldfirn and Grüneggfirn firn fields merge – is large enough to hold a town such as Chur, Bellinzona or Frauenfeld.
Weight
11 billion tonnes, or the weight of 72.5 million jumbo jets.
Maximum ice thickness
More than 900 m at Concordia.
Velocity
The ice formed in the catchment area of the glacier moves downhill like a viscous mass, providing a constant supply of ice to the snout. The distance covered by the ice over time in the process is the glacier's velocity. The velocity of the Great Aletsch Glacier is 200 m per year at Concordia, and 80 – 90 m per year at the level of the Aletsch Forest.
A huge store of water
If this mass of ice were melted, it could supply every single person on the Earth with a litre of water every day for 4.5 years.

At the foot of the Jungfrau , the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland
Unbelievable nature above the ever changing Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland. Surrounding mountain ranges change continuously as does the glacier itself, to provide for an ever exciting landscape
Switzerland's Jungfrau - Grindelwald First to Schynige Platte - The Panorama Way
Switzerland's Jungfrau & Grindelwald First to Schynige Platte Panorama Way
Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region (Berner Oberland) renders you speechless – we can’t when we said “Wow” so often. Made me dance at Bachalpsee, lol! (see video).
We defy you not to get frothy about the dreamy landscapes, geological wonders & superb Swiss engineering. Seilbahns (cable cars) deliver you upon high to walk or marvel. Walking's not mandatory - enjoy sumptuous views from the cafés at First or Schynige Platte.
The Jungfrau & Valais Regions are home to the tallest & most vast glacial region in Switzerland. I assumed the Aletsch Glacier was the best-of-the-best. The Jungfrau delivers equal awesomeness!!! Glaciers are retreating with global warming. Lower glaciers may disappear in the next 20 years so best get to the Jungfrau now.
We take the cable car from Grindelwald to First. Picture postcard chalets, with red geraniums flowerboxes, nestle into the verdant green slopes & clanging cowbells drift into the cable-car from far below. Soon forgotten as the Swiss Alps & glaciers, take centre stage. Rick Steves reckons this is where Heidi lives. More like Bollywood! We shared the magnificently engineered First Cliff Walk with a wedding & hoards of early tourists.
Next stop was magical Bachalpsee, mirroring the “Imperial Crown” – Finsteraarhorn (4,274m/14,022ft), Fiescherhorner (4,049M) & Schreckhorn (4,078m) . Bollywood's blockbuster DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) was filmed nearby – catnip for Indian tourists.
Japanese tourists are smitten – many marry here.Who wouldn’t want an infinity view of the Swiss Alps in their wedding photos?
Moving onto Falhorn at 2,681m / 8,796 ft (our highest point for this walk) we have superb 360 degree views of The Jungfrau & Interlaken. Snow's fallen overnight. The trail's quiet at the end of the season & will close soon.
Pace slows as I film the majesty - 4,000m / 13,000 ft + mountains, glaciers, hanging U-shaped valleys. Grindelwald’s glacial canyons & surreal blue glacial lakes…
We keep a steady pace to catch the last train from Schynige Platte.
Our reveries are punctuated by the sonic boom of fighter jets, practising overhead. They take defence seriously (hiding jets inside mountains).
100 years ago Italian labourers drilled a rail tunnel through the Eiger & Jungfrau for the impressive Jungfrau Top of The World Train (stops 704m / 2,310ft short of the Jungfrau’s 4,158m summit). Without a train pass it’s hundreds of dollars. Pick a good weather day to see the start of the 23km Aletsch Glacier (Alps' longest).
We make our way to Schynige Platte (great picnic spot for a shorter walks arriving by train) passing through a huge boulder field to catch the train back down to Wilderswil (interchange for Interlaken & Grindelwald). It's a track & pinion (Cog) railway = steep & slow (60 minutes to reflect on a stellar day).
Swiss trails are magnificently maintained & signposted. Select the level of walk from a sauntering walking trail, mountain trail (white-red-white) to alpine routes (white-blue-white). The weather was so fabulous we had no excuse but to walk every day!!
