LEAD IN:
At 5,772 miles (9, 289 kilometres) the Trans-Siberian railway is one of the world's epic train journeys, across eight time zones from Moscow to the far eastern post of Vladivostok.
Its primitive accommodation, terrible cuisine and poor hygiene facilities have until now attracted only the most intrepid tourists.
But Russia's state-run railway company is hoping the launch of a new luxury train may well bring the tourists flocking to Siberia.
STORYLINE:
At Moscow's Yaroslavsky station the symbols of the Soviet era can still be seen.
Trains from Russia's Far East are welcomed to Moscow by rousing music piped through station loudspeakers.
After six days, 5,772 miles (9, 289 kilometres) and eight time zones, the passengers emerge bleary-eyed onto the platform to be greeted by friends and relatives.
Many, like Natalya, are happy with the journey.
She says it is safer than flying and a lot cheaper.
A single ticket costs 12,000 roubles (US$465), a third of the price of the flight.
But a lack of air conditioning makes it a hot and rocky journey.
A few hours and a change of staff later, the train is ready to make its return journey.
The Trans-Siberian railway, built between 1891 and 1916, travels from Moscow through vast pine forests, over the Ural mountains and across the Siberian tundra to the Pacific Ocean.
Built during the days of the Tsar, the railroad was adapted to Soviet needs and became the world's longest passenger rail route.
And Russia's state-run railways is attempting to recreate those days with the launch of the Golden Eagle.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: BIKERS GATHER FOR THREE DAY FESTIVAL
English/Nat
Russia's easy riders have gathered for a three-day-long motorcycle festival, held in the countryside just outside Moscow.
The festival is the sort of freedom Russians are still getting used to - motorcycle gangs used to be strictly forbidden in Soviet times.
But don't be fooled by the black leather and goggles - the event's organiser is no hell's angel - he's a qualified surgeon.
The streets of Moscow were humming Friday with the sound of thousands of bikers revving up for the start of a weekend-long motorcycle festival.
Clad in black leather, the motorcycle buffs had come from all over Russia for the country's second ever national motorcycle show.
Back in the days of the Soviet Union, motorcycle groups - and the wild culture that accompanied them - were not allowed.
But now, Russia's bikers can revel in the new atmosphere of openness - and at least five thousand motorcyclists are expected to attend the outdoor gala.
The festival began with a massive street party in Moscow - the bikers met up in the capital to travel together to the party site, one hour outside of the city.
Setting off en masse, they formed a massive motorcycle motorcade and sped down Moscow's Leningradsky highway.
The Woodstock-style festival - which will feature contests, concerts and partying - has been organised by Russia's pioneering motorcycle gang - the Nightwolves.
A Slavic version of the world-famous Hells Angels, the Nightwolves have been wearing leather and riding Harleys for over 10 years.
Alexander Sergeyev is their leader - don't be fooled by the look, by profession he is a medical surgeon.
He told APTV that Russia's biker movement represents more than just rock-n-roll and girls in short skirts.
SOUNDBITE:
Just a new way of life, a new philosophical, you know the people they live all the time, it's the same, just only one idol this is money and you know they pray to only this idol. And the biker scene this is something else, something different. They want to show it's not only these things, they have friendship, like really friendship, like brothers.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexander Sergeyev, festival organiser
Russian bikers have it harder than their European or American counterparts.
Most of their dream-machines have been put together by hand, with some bike enthusiasts building their cycles with whatever parts are available.
But the biker scene in Russia is still young and that means it's still homegrown.
Shelya Yung has been a biker girl for years.
She says the Russian motorcycle crowd has a special appeal.
SOUNDBITE:
We've got a big country, it's like America or Australia, in London well it's not that obvious, I haven't seen people being so friendly and altogether, like you have people from France and England, they don't.. well maybe they do but I never saw them together so much as here, people are friends here they are always together, in wintertime, never mind, we know each other for years now.
SUPER CAPTION: Shelya Yung, Biker girl
The world may think of Russia as colourless and stolid, but the Russian biker scene rolls over that image.

Russia: Hijack Relatives: Russian plane hijacked latest
Natural Sound
Anxious relatives of passengers on board the hijacked plane gathered at Moscow's Vnukovo airport on Thursday to try and discover the fate of their family members and friends.
Vnukovo Airlines flight number 2-8-0-6 flying from Istanbul to Moscow, was hijacked soon after the take off by two unidentified men.
The plane was thought to have landed in Saudi Arabia.
However, airline officials are not reveling any information to relatives due to conflicting information.
The official line is that the plane is indefinitely delayed.
Meanwhile, security measures have been stepped up at Istanbul airport in case the hijacked plane returns there.
There are 166 passengers and crew on board the plane, 59 of them are Turkish citizens.
The demands of the two hijackers, reportedly of Chechen origin, are still unclear.
The plane, a TU-154 from Vnukovo Airlines, took off at 1:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) from Istanbul's Ataturk International
airport.
The two hijackers took over the plane 30 minutes later, the Anatolia news agency reported.
Russia has long accused Turkey of supporting Chechen rebels, and Chechens injured in fighting against Russian
forces have been treated in Turkish hospitals.
Turkey and Russia recently signed an agreement to cooperate in the battle against terrorism after Turkey reportedly promised to stop all support to the Chechens.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We are waiting. My wife is on one of the planes arriving from Istanbul, I do not know on which one. One of them has landed, but I do not know if she is on that one. I knew that she had to arrive at 17:30. We have no knowledge about what is going on, apart from the fact that some terrorists wanted to go elsewhere. I am very worried.
SUPERCAPTION: Alexander, relative of one of the passengers
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We just found out that the plane was hijacked. I do not know what to do. All we can do is wait.

SIBERIA: PRESIDENT YELTSIN PROMISES TO PAY MINERS UNPAID WAGES
Russian/Nat
Desperate to stay in power for another term, President Yeltsin turned his election campaign into a spending spree, promising (m) millions of dollars of unpaid salaries to Russia's disgruntled industrial workers.
Russia's miners had threatened industrial action for the non-payment of wages, but Yeltsin promised them payment in full for their valuable support.
Two weeks after his victory, the miners still have not been paid.
One thousand Siberian miners went on strike on Wednesday -- they haven't been paid for five months and are fast losing patience with Yeltsin and his government.
The statue of the founding father of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin, still dominates the Siberian city of Kemerovo, but the elite status given to Russia's miners has long disappeared.
For Russia's Bolshevik leaders, coal was the bread of industry.
In the heady days of industrialisation, the Soviet Union's miners were glorified as the proletarian elite.
Although the Kuzbass region boasts enough fossil fuel to last another hundred years, it is increasingly difficult to dig coal as production costs rise.
Forced to use obsolete equipment, miners subject their lives to extreme danger -- at least one life is lost for every (m) million tons of coal produced.
The wages are low and miners are not paid for months on end.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I'm struck by how much patience people have. They go on working but receive no pay. When Yeltsin first came to power he promised a lot - even promised to throw himself on the railway tracks if the miners lived poorly. But for some reason he just didn't want to come to Kuzbass this time. He's visited almost every region apart from Kuzbass.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexander Makarov, mineworker
Five years ago Russia's miners helped Yeltsin come to power -- but today his standing in Kuzbass is at an all-time low.
During this summer's presidential elections, Yeltsin's arch-rival Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov won in the Kemerovo region with a solid 10 percent margin.
The area, the size of Hungary, accounts for 80 percent of Russia's coal production.
The livelihood of one in three families depends on work in the region's 100 mines.
The average monthly pay is 300 U-S dollars and even that hasn't been paid in most mines since April.
Miners live in shabby housing with no hope ever to improve their living conditions.
But managers at the Kedrovsky open cast mine have proved that the situation is not completely hopeless.
Employing 3,700 workers, the mine turns out 3.8 (m) million tons of coal a year.
But unlike other enterprises which are waiting for government money to pay their workers, management here is selling coal to customers in Turkey and other foreign countries and getting hard currency in return.
The monthly wages at Kedrovsky are over one thousand dollars -- three times the national average.
The management spends a significant share of its sale revenues to build housing for its workers.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Not too long ago we took down the last barracks. In our times people still lived in barracks which were built in 1950. If we had kept these people living there in those barracks, then people would not have wanted to work or would have worked poorly. They would have nothing to strive for. We ought to help our workers.
SUPER CAPTION: Albert Kolesnikov, Deputy General Director, Kedrovsky
Open cast Mine
The result is the Greek Village, a settlement of luxury houses built for the work force by a Greek construction company.
But for people like Ekaterina Gryaznova, such housing is just a dream.
Although she voted for Yeltsin, Ekaterina has begun to give up on the government and Yeltsin - she's looking to a higher power for help.

Criminal Putin regime arrested opposition Leader of Russia Alexey Navalny for 15 days
BBC World News © 2017
Criminal Putin regime arrested opposition Leader of Russia Alexey Navalny for 15 days
Obvious to all, and today's events in March 26, 2017 demonstrated
that Russia has a new political force able to lead the people of Russia healthy forces of Russia, against tyranny, against the criminal corrupt regime of Putin and his entire gang, in which over 17 years of criminal rule of Putin's policies, the people of this country, Russia, has become even worse to live in complete poverty and poverty, the country is in the arbitrariness of the authorities, the police and the courts. From the Treasury of the state by Putin's gang, stolen more than 375 billion EUROS, without control of the national stolen all the natural resources of the country. Putin's regime must be overthrown, the country needs a new political change. The whole world knows Putin over 17 years of criminal rule the country and the people of Russia led to disaster.
Thousands of people joined rallies nationwide, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev over corruption allegations.
At least 500 other protesters were detained in the capital and across the country.
Most of the marches were illegal, organised without official permission.
TV pictures showed demonstrators chanting Down with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin!, Russia without Putin! and Putin is a thief!.
Correspondents say the marches appear to be the biggest since anti-government demonstrations in 2011/2012.
Alexei Navalny was detained as he arrived to join the rally in central Moscow. Protesters then tried to prevent a police van from taking him away.
In a tweet after his detention, he urged fellow protesters to continue with the demonstration.
Guys, I'm fine. No need to fight to get me out. Walk along Tverskaya [Moscow main street]. Our topic of the day is the fight against corruption, he said (in Russian).
He later said police stormed the office of his foundation and detained its staff, who were broadcasting the protests live.
Demonstrations were also held in Saint Petersburg, Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Tomsk and several other cities, where arrests had also been reported.
Why the protests?
Alexei Navalny called for the nationwide protests after he published reports claiming that Mr Medvedev controlled mansions, yachts and vineyards - a fortune that far outstripped his official salary.
Mr Medvedev's spokeswoman called the allegations propagandistic attacks, but the prime minister himself has not commented on the claims.
The reports included the accusation that Mr Medvedev had a special house for a duck on one of his properties - and on Sunday, some demonstrators held up images of yellow rubber ducks.
Others showed up with their faces painted green, a reference to a recent attack in which Mr Navalny was hit with green liquid.
In Moscow, protesters filled Pushkin square and some climbed the monument to poet Alexander Pushkin shouting impeachment. Turnout was estimated to be between 7,000 and 8,000, according to police.
The police said 500 protesters had been arrested in the capital alone, but a rights group, OVD Info, put that number at at least 700.
The Kremlin has not commented on the demonstrations. It had said on Friday that plans for an unauthorised protest in central Moscow were an illegal provocation.
State TV channels did not cover the demonstrations.
Local media reports suggested the authorities pressured students not to attend. In some cities, exams were scheduled on Sunday.
Alexei Navalny announced his intention to run for president in 2018 against Vladimir Putin. But he is barred from doing so after being found guilty in a case he said was politicised.
He said on his website that protests were planned in 99 cities, but that in 72 of them authorities did not give permission.
