Macedonia statue ignites tensions with Greece
Macedonia has inflamed long-standing tensions with its neighbour Greece by unveiling a $13m statue named 'Warrior on a Horse' in the country's capital.
The statue closely resembles Alexander the Great, the former king of Macedon who is claimed by both countries as their own.

What Nationality was Alexander the Great ?
What nationality was Alexander the Great?
This question on 19th of August this year, was asked by the British TV Broadcaster Challenge TV, on the quiz show Take it or Leave it. The question was fatal for the two competitors who answered the challenge wrongly in thinking that Alexander the Great was from Greece. The correct answer was the Republic of Macedonia.
Royal grave site of the lost ancient kingdom of Pelagonia found in the Republic of Macedonia - Откриена изгубената престолнина Пелагонија
23.09.2008
Latest discoveries by archaeologists have shown a massive royal grave site in a village known as Bonce in Macedonia, one of a kind in the Balkans, which has led them to suggest that the locality may be the long lost kingdom of Pelagonia.
The grave site was discovered by a team led by Professor Viktor Lilcic.
According to the way this was built, the brilliance behind it, and just from the sheer size of the grave site, we believe the king of Pelagonia had been buried here, said Dr. Antonio Jakimovski, coordinator of the Archeological Research.
The grave site is from the 4th century B.C. when the kingdom of the Pelagonians was around. It was suggested the site had been robbed even in Antic times.
This is one of the rarest gravesites not just in the Balkans, but globally that goes back to the 4th century BC, said Jakimovski.
The site is located right underneath the hill of Visoka where it is suggested to be the site of the city of Pelagonia.
Unfortunately, the Government did not allocate funds this year for the Visoka location.
Archeologists have been searching for the city of Pelagonia and the Pelagonian kingdom for more than 150 years.
This find will undoubtedly make funds available for Visoka in 2009.
Just two years ago, near the hill of Visoka were discovered three Macedonian Shields of King Demetrij with the Vergina Sun embedded on them. The shields are currently undergoing restorations.
When completed, the world will see for the first time how did the shields of the Macedonian phalanx look like.

October 11th - Macedonian national holiday celebrated in Prilep
11.10.2009
68th anniversary since the start of the Day of People's Uprising against Fascism & National Liberation War
The Republic of Macedonia marked the 68th anniversary since the start of the Day of People's Uprising against Fascism and National Liberation War. The Macedonian people responded to the fascist occupation by organizing an insurrection. At that time the first sabotage units were created. Kumanovo and Prilep detachments were founded, their actions started on October 11, 1941 being the beginning of the Macedonian people uprising. During 1942 the partisan movement were also in ascent. Nine detachments were founded acting on a large territory. During the winter and the spring in 1944, the Macedonian Army has taken important military actions (the February march, the Spring offensive), causing great damage to the Bulgarian fascist occupiers. During the period of 1944 the network of governmental organs in Macedonia has been spread, over 800 in number. The preparations for convocation of the ASNOM have been taken by the Headquarters General and the Initiative Board. Thus, by the end of the war, the Macedonian National Liberation Army numbered over 56,000 soldiers, and this part of Macedonia alone provided about 25,000 victims. The liberation of Macedonia by its own forces was an outstanding military and political accomplishment of the Macedonian people and at the same time it was a significant contribution by a small people to the anti-fascist struggle in the Balkans and Europe.
Coins with the image of Philip II of Macedon found at Tsarevi Kuli, Strumica
18.04.09
New significant artefacts dating to the fourth century BC were found by Macedonian archaeologists at the Tsarevi Kuli site near the town of Strumica in eastern Macedonia.
The artefacts included coins with the image of the father of Alexander the Great Philip II of Macedon, amphorae, vessels, cups, jewellery, fragments from vases, ceramics and figurines, the Vecher daily newspaper wrote. All these artefacts, according to the publication, testify for the fact that the Strumica Fortress was inhabited around the end of the fourth century BC.
The excavations, according to arheologist Ruyak, showed that in the fourth century at the Tsarevi Kuli there was definite activity, and most likely there was a settlement. Some findings, primarily the ceramic vessels, date to the fifth century BC.
The Tsarevi Kuli site was used for different purposes during different periods and the findings so far serve to show the continuity of culture in Strumica. According to Ruyak, the city of Strumica and its surroundings have a continuity of culture of 7,000 years.

STORYLINE:
The International Court of Justice is expected to rule this week on a bitter name dispute between Macedonia and Greece - a conflict that has led to a wave of nationalism in Macedonia and which Greece claims could trigger territorial claims over its northern regions.
Macedonia took Greece to the UN's highest judicial body seeking a ruling that Athens had illegally vetoed its application for NATO membership three years ago in breach of a 1995 agreement to support its membership of international organisations under the name The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Greece claims Macedonia's use of the ancient Greek name and its national use of historic Greek symbols - including the warrior king Alexander the Great - implies that Skopje still harbours ambitions to take over Greek territory, including its northern province of the same name.
It has also demanded that Skopje find another name that does not include Macedonia in any form.
Speaking on Sunday, one of Macedonia's former foreign ministers suggested a compromise could be found.
The solution might in the end be some kind of adaptation of the reference which is being used now, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Denko Maleski said.
But the people of Macedonia will not accept this diktat by a foreign state to change the constitution, to change the name of the institutions here inside Macedonia, he added.
His opinion was echoed on the streets of Skopje
No, I'm not willing to do that, to change our name for entering in NATO or the European Union, said locla resident Tomislav Gjorceski.
Yet Greek tourist Antonis Zikos had a different view.

11th October - Macedonian national holiday - Prilep
11.10.07
Macedonia celebrates the 66th anniversary since the start of the National-Liberation War against the fascist occupation:
On 11th of October, 1941 the Macedonian People rose against the fascist occupation in Macedonia. This liberation uprising evolved later in the Macedonian State of 1944.
During World War II (1941-1945), ethnic Macedonians took part in the anti-fascist coalition for creating their own state Macedonia, respecting the promise from the Atlantic charter that all nations who take part in the struggle against fascism shall choose their own form of government and shall be afforded the means of dwelling in safety within their own boundaries, and which will afford assurance that all the men in all lands may live out their lives in freedom from fear and want.
As a result, on 11 October 1941 in the Vardar part of Macedonia there was simultaneous uprising against the fascist occupation in Prilep and Kumanovo, where as in 1942 there were uprisings in the Aegean part of Macedonia (in Lerin and Kostur) headed by Lazo Trpovski and in the Pirin part of Macedonia (in Dupnica) headed by Nikola Parapunov. In spite of the lack of coordination, the intention was clear - liberation of the entire territory of Macedonia. However, only the people in the Vardar part managed to create a state in the face of the People's Republic of Macedonia within the framework of then Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. The ethnic Macedonians in the Pirin part of Macedonia were granted autonomy and certain cultural and ethnic rights in 1946, but these rights were revoked at the end of the decade at the height of the cold war. In the Aegean part of Macedonia there was a civil war in which the ethnic Macedonians took part hoping to acquire certain ethnic and cultural right, however at the end of the civil war hundreds of thousands of ethnic Macedonians were exiled and any show of ethnic Macedonian identity was banned.
