Arbat street. The soul of Moscow. [MoscowTravelGuide]
So let's walk along the Arbat pavement and find out where Lev Tolstoy had dinner, where Alexander Pushkin spent his honeymoon and where Bulgakov's Margarita flew on the broom.
From the 19th century Arbat becomes one of the most aristocratic street in Moscow together with Povarskaya street. You can see an interesting video about this street on our channel.
Tolstoy, Rastopchin, Gagarin, Dolgorukiy, Cheremetiev, Golitsyn - all these noblemen lived here. Small mansions in empire style, wooden houses surrounded by gardens, but practically no shops.
The origin of the word Arbat is a mystery. Maybe it comes from the word arba -cart and maybe from the arabic word rabat -suburbs.
The street starts from the Arbat square. There is a cinema theatre Khudogestvenniy here - one of the oldest cinemas in Russia. It was opened in 1909 and then rebuilt by architect Shekhtel.
Arbatskaya metro station, that faces the square, has a shape of a five pointed star. This building is one of the first symbols of the Moscow metro.
From the end of the 19th century Arbat gets its contemporary look with several floor apartment houses, hotels, restaurants and shops. The names of its owners become popular, Filippov’s bakery, Shustov’s vines, Einem’s sweets.
Merchant Semen Tararikin openes Praga inn. We’ve told about this famous restaurant in our video about Povarskaya street.
Right here Chekov celebrated the premiere of his Seagull, Tolstoy read his novels. Poet Vladimir Mayakovsky liked to go here, when Praga became Мosselprom canteen.
In 1930s-1950 Arbat becomes the main government route. Stalin drives here to Kremlin every day, and the street itself is under the constant supervision of the secret police. Anatoliy Rybakov wrote about this times of arrests and repressions in his book The children of Arbat And here is the house where the action of the novel takes place.
Arbat becomes the first walking street in Moscow and the most popular one only 30 years ago.
Since the times of Perestroika Arbat becomes the centre of spontaneous concerts, actors playing in the street, poets reading their poems, singers, professional and unprofessional performing in a couple of meters of each other. Tents with souvenirs, book markets, painters were at every step of the street.
Last year the authorities banned the informal culture on Arbat, and the music stopped here.
Let's continue our walk- this building in soviet classicism style is the Vakhtangov drama theatre. Its history started in 1913 with the theatre studio, opened by the pupil of Stanislavskiy Yevgeny Vakhtangov. In 1926 the studio became a theater and the theatrical school - today it is the famous Schuka. Its graduates are many well known russian actors and directors.
As I told before from the 19th century some sеveral floor apartment houses appeared on Arbat. This impressive building in neo gothic style was built in 1913 by order of Anna Filatova. It is considered that Bulgakov's Margarita smashed the apartment of Latunski right here.
This 6 floor mansion was built only for 6 months, and in the beginning of the 20th century it was a real skyscraper!
From 1992 the house of Filatova is the Actors house. And it has its symbol: 2 knights on the corner tower on the height of the 4th floor. Not many people look so high to mention these fearsome guardians. But they still lean on their swords and watch the people who walk along Arbat.
And this house was a home of Alexander Pushkin! Opposite the house, which is now a museum, there is a sculpture of the poet and his beautiful wife Natalia Goncharova.
It represents the happiest period in Pushkin's life. Right here the young couple spent their honeymoon after the wedding. Pushkin said that he was absolutely happy at this time, and maybe because of that he didn't write a single line!
Now our walk along Old Arbat is over, but there are so many interesting things that wait ahead!

An Private Walk Through Odessa with Olga
I arranged a private walking tour with Olga, Odessawalks.com, to visit Jewish Odessa. Even though the Viking Lomonosov offered a Jewish Odessa, I prefer a private individualized tour whenever possible; to linger or move along at uninteresting sights. Somehow, the Jewish Tour mushroomed into touring Central Odessa in depth and an added Ukrainian Food Tour! Steve and I are always up for food, especially, wonderful Ukrainian food as promised by Olga.
Olga met us at the dock and we began walking on a great day in Odessa...
Soviet avant-garde art from Uzbekistan exhibited in Moscow
(22 Apr 2017) LEADIN
A rare exhibition of Soviet avant-garde art from Uzbekistan has gone on display in Moscow.
The show contains many works collected by 1950s painter Igor Savitsky.
STORYLINE
A group of art fans take in Alexander Volkov's 'Brigade entering the field'.
It's one of 200 paintings from the Savitsky State Art Museum of Karakalpakstan to have gone on display at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
This rare travelling exhibit is from a gallery widely regarded as having one of the world's best Soviet avant-garde art.
Vladimir Lysenko's painted bull stares at the viewer with flat, black eyes, one of his horns festooned in a mosaic of bright rectangles, the tip of his tail stretched toward a glowing orange globe that may be the sun.
What he intended with this classic painting of the Soviet avant-garde is unknown; it is from an era when unconventional art was literally arresting. Lysenko was arrested in 1935 and what happened to him afterwards is unclear.
Over the years, the painting has become one of the most renowned images of the artistic ferment that bubbled under the strictures of insipid Soviet social realism.
But until recently, anyone who wanted to see it had to travel to an isolated city in Uzbekistan's desert.
The show also draws attention to the history of the museum, which is as remarkable as the works it holds.
In this museum we have gathered some truly unique collections of things that, first of all, tell the story of Turkistan avant-garde. It is a very special field of study, says Director of The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Marina Loshak.
In the 1950s, painter Igor Savitsky got work in an archaeological expedition in Uzbekistan.
He became fascinated by the intricate weavings and elegant pottery of the local Karakalpak ethnic group and collected extensively. Local officials, flattered by his interest, helped him establish a museum in the city of Nukus.
Savitsky was also concerned about the fate of the works of the Soviet Union's more adventurous artists.
In the early 20th century, Russia had been a hotbed of bold art experimentations: Suprematism, Constructivism and visions too idiosyncratic to fit into any category.
But by the early 1930s, authorities decreed that art must express Soviet ideals and be comprehensible to the average worker.
Bold colours, dancing polygons and strange faces disappeared from the public view, replaced by muscular construction workers and children devotedly presenting bouquets to Josef Stalin.
Savitsky began collecting as much of the unofficial art as he could, reportedly filling train sleeping compartments with paintings to bring them to Nukus, some 2000 kilometres (1200 miles) from Moscow.
Savitsky has been praised as a patron of the Nukus art sanctuary and unknown artists of the region.
Many of the works likely would have been destroyed or become irreparably deteriorated if he had not been able to spirit them to the city far away from the central government's attention.
He collected works without taking into consideration whether this was a well-known name or not well-known. He collected art with an orientation on the art itself, says curator Irina Kim.
Bazarbai Serekeyev is an Uzbek artist whose works was spotted by Savitsky in the 70s:
Savitsky looked at my work and asked Did you paint this yourself?, I said yes. After that he bought three of my paintings and told me that I should paint more. He gave me some recommendations. His words inspired me and I started painting more, he says.
Many of the works in the show had to be lovingly restored before they were displayed.
The exhibition in Moscow runs April 21 until 10 May 2017.

Monument to Founders of Kyiv
The story behind the name Kyiv goes back hundreds of years to the mythical foundation of the city. According to legend, the city was founded in the 5th century by three brothers, and a sister, the oldest brother being named Prince Kyi. They supposedly sailed down the Dnipro River and established a settlement at the top of four hills on the grounds of what is today known as Schekavitsa and Khorivitsa. One can overlook this area if you go right after ascending Andrew's Descent. You may also visit likenesses of the four siblings in one of two areas, either on the bank of the Dnipro River near Paton bridge, or at the fountain in Maidan Nezaleznosti.

State spox: Detention Russian nationals in 3rd countries. 27 Aug 2015
John Kirby, State Department Spokesperson.
U.S. Department of State - Daily Briefing: August.27.2015
FINNS CONFIRM RUSSIAN SUSPECTED OF COMPUTER CRIMES DETAINED ON US REQUEST – 27 Aug - Finnish officials say a Russian citizen has been detained in Finland on an international arrest warrant issued by the United States. The Justice Ministry said in a statement Thursday that Maxim Senakh was arrested Aug. 8. No details were given.
The ministry added Senakh faces charges of several cases of computer fraud and misdemeanor in Minnesota, and is suspected of having derived considerable benefit from his activities.
In Moscow, the foreign ministry called it just another manifestation of an illegal practice of U.S. officials to detain Russian nationals in other countries.
The Finns said the United States had 45 days to submit an official extradition request or he would be released.

RUSSIAN, DETAINED IN FINLAND, CAN’T BE EXTRADITED TO US: Russian Foreign Ministry - 26 Aug - […] It is evident that if the talk was about the necessity to stop criminal activity, it would be more logical to first send relevant information to the country of citizenship of the suspect, the more so as Russia and the United States have a contractual framework for cooperation in the criminal and legal sphere. But it is not being done, the commissioner said.

[…]
The warning is very similar to the one issued in September 2013, after the detention of Russian citizens in third countries at the request of US law enforcers had become more frequent. The statement mentioned the arrests of Dmitry Ustinov in Lithuania, Dmitry Belorossov in Spain, Maksim Chukhrayev in Costa Rica and Aleksander Panin in the Dominican Republic.
