A quick walk about in Johannesburg's famous Alexandra Township around the M1 Madala Hostel - built by the apartheid government to house migrant workers in the early 1970's. Building Professionals attended a pre-tender briefing on 14 April 2010. This vast structure is packed with inhabitants living under appalling conditions, mostly new arrivals to the city from various parts of Africa. It will be demolished and modern housing and urban facilities will be constructed over the next four to five years.
The City of Johannesburg has been implementing urban renewal projects in the township for over a decade and will continue to do so for many years to come. One of the completed projects can be seen at the end of the clip.
