AMOA's Permanent Collection
Collective Visions: Louisiana’s Artistic Lineage. This exhibition will be in place for 5 years and explores influences that moved through Louisiana art beginning with the Woodward Brothers at Tulane and Newcomb. Using works from our collection we map these influences through Louisiana’s colleges, schools and collectives and will have changes each year to keep it fresh for our home audience. Additionally, the Museum is working with Culture Connect to create an App that will allow our visitors to dig deeper into the exhibition and the collection. After conferring with colleagues, I believe we are the only ones doing this particular research, which opens us up to more internship and student research opportunities.
In the last 3 years we have added close to 250 works to our collection. This includes a donation of the CLECO collection of 20 works by Lloyd Hawthorne and 99 pieces from the state of Louisiana that includes important Louisiana artists such as Clyde Connell, Ida Kolmeyer, Elmore Morgan, Jr, Arthur Silverman, George Dunbar, Robert Gordy and John McCrady as well as prominent Art Professors Ed Premuk, Micheal Crespo, Robert Warrens, Bill Iles and more. Some artists whose works have been donated include the Newcomb pottery artist Henrietta Bailey, Caroline Durieux, John Drysdale, Cora Kelley Ward, Malaika Favorite, James Michalopoulos and Rolland Golden. Some Works that have been purchased by our collector’s circle and the museum include Keith Perelli, Micheal Yankowski, Aron Belka, Francis Pavy, and Micheal Elliott-Smith and Leslie Elliotsmith. The most prominent piece most recently added is an iconic kinetic sculpture by Lin Emery entitled “Frans Tree” bequeathed by Fran Bolton Davis that we have just installed in front of the Museum.

Library of Alexandria | Alexandria Day Tour - Egypt Attractions Tours
Library of Alexandria | Alexandria Day Tour | Things to do in Alexandria | Egypt Attractions Tours
The idea of reviving the old library dates back to 1974, when a committee set up by Alexandria University selected a plot of land for its new library, between the campus and the seafront, close to where the ancient library once stood. The recreation of the ancient library was not only adopted by other individuals and agencies, it garnered support from Egyptian politicians. One leading supporter of the project was former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak; UNESCO was also quick to embrace the concept of endowing the Mediterranean region with a center of cultural and scientific excellence. An architectural design competition was organized by UNESCO in 1988 to choose a design worthy of the site and its heritage. The competition was won by Snøhetta, a Norwegian architectural office, from among more than 1,400 entries. The first pledges were made for funding the project at a conference held in 1990 in Aswan: USD $65 million, mostly from the MENA states. Construction work began in 1995 and, after some US$220 million had been spent, the complex was officially inaugurated on 16 October 2002.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is trilingual, containing books in Classical Arabic, English, and French. In 2010, the library received a donation of 500,000 books from the National Library of France, Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). The gift makes the Bibliotheca Alexandrina the sixth-largest Francophone library in the world. The BA also is now the largest depository of French books in the Middle East and North Africa, surpassing those of Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, in addition to being the main French library in Africa.
