Discover a collection created for Sheffield's workers over 130 years ago; a collection designed to inspire creativity and to be a haven from the busy workday world.
John Ruskin, who formed this collection, was a Victorian writer who searched passionately for beauty in the world around him. He explored nature from the smallest pebble to the mightiest landscape and examined art from the daintiest brush stroke to soaring architectural structures.
During his lifetime,England's manufacturing cities expanded and became wealthy, whilst their workforces lived in poverty and grime. Workers had little to inspire them. Ruskin wanted to counter this imbalance and set up the Guild of St George, a philanthropic society. Through the Guild, Ruskin founded a museum specifically for Sheffield's workers. He filled it with a collection of artworks, illustrated books and minerals, all chosen to reflect his exploration of beauty.
Originally sited at Walkley, just outside the city centre, visitors could escape the smoke that surrounded them and immerse themselves in nature and art. Today, though the Ruskin Collection is exhibited in the city centre, it is still displayed and used as the creative and inspirational tool that Ruskin intended.
Visitors to the Ruskin Collection will see a broad range of exhibits, including early renaissance art, gothic architecture, engravings, mosaic decoration, illustrations of birds, flowers, insects, geological specimens, illustrated books and medieval manuscripts.
The items on display from the Ruskin Collection are changed twice each year. Explore the collection through the changing displays, and find out if you share Ruskin's thoughts on beauty.
The Millennium Gallery is an art gallery and museum in the centre of Sheffield, England. Opened in April 2001 as part of Sheffield's Heart of the City project, it is located in the city centre close to the mainline station, the Central Library and Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield Hallam University, and Sheffield Theatres. Designed by architects Pringle Richards Sharratt, the building is primarily made from concrete and glass, with a series of galleries extending from a central avenue, which connects Arundel Gate with Sheffield Winter Garden. In 2011, the gallery was listed as the 15th most-visited free attraction in the country by Visit England.[1] It is managed by Museums Sheffield.
The gallery has two permanent collections, two temporary exhibition spaces, space for corporate events and weddings, and a cafe and shop.
Sheffield Traditional Heritage Museum, South Yorkshire, England
This is part of the course-work of a Sheffield Hallam University broadcast journalism student (2008-09). Enjoy the short video feature about Sheffield's secret museum. Its doors open to public only on the last Saturday of every month! The museum on Ecclesall Road houses exhibits and mock-ups that are a throwback to the early 20th century. It's a tribute to the ordinary people who lived in Sheffield during those good old days. Please note: Names of the interviewees that appear in captions are NOT real. This aspect needs an explanation. Here goes: When the video was produced, it was never intended to be published in the public domain such as YouTube. Due to a mix-up, notes containing names of the interviewees were lost. Since the video had to be produced and submitted before a certain deadline, and since the interviews were impromptu, there was no chance to contact the interviewees again. So, I had no alternative but to use imaginary names in captions (since this was originally intended to be course-work). Many apologies to the people ooncerned (who, if they happen to watch this video, should kindly excuse this lapse. I am sure you will understand. Shall be better next time.)

George Wyllie: A Life Less Ordinary
The final exhibition at the Collins Gallery draws together treasures from George Wyllie's Archive, generously gifted by the artist to the University of Strathclyde, and celebrates not only his extraordinary career, but also, his long-standing relationship with the Collins.
Inspired by a transcript of an extensive interview commissioned by the British Library, the show will aim to capture the essence of George through selected letters, photographs, sketches, programmes, small sculptures, paintings and the DVD made especially for The Cosmic Voyage.
Visitors will also be encouraged to visit two of Glasgow's best known Wyllie sculptures: Monument to Maternity and the Running Clock, both located nearby.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Beckett Collection (University of Reading)
The Beckett Collection - part of our Research Showcase series.
The Beckett Collection comprises over 500 manuscripts by Beckett and is derived from an exhibition that was put on here at the University in 1971 by Professor James Knowlson. This exhibition grew into what is now the largest archive of Beckett materials in the world. Samuel Beckett, an Irish writer, born 1906, died 1989, was very prolific over the course of his writing career and was very generous in giving a lot of his manuscripts and other material to the collection here.
