Victoria & Alfred Waterfront-V&A Waterfront shopping mall, Cape Town's best shopping location
There are few places as quintessentially Cape Town as the V&A Waterfront. The old world charm of the historical harbour meets the most modern shopping experience and the gaps in between are filled with fine dining restaurants, down-to- earth food markets, museums, and more leisure activities than you can count on both hands.Calls for greater public access and a wider use of Cape Town's historic harbour started in the early 1970's. In 1988, the then landowner (State-owned transport corporation, Transnet Limited) established a wholly owned subsidiary company, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (Pty) Limited, to redevelop the historic docklands. This was received with large-scale public acclaim.Since its origins in 1860, the Port of Cape Town has been the scene of excavations, reclamations, harbour construction programmes and land based developments. By the time Prince Alfred* tipped the first load of stone into the sea to initiate construction of Cape Town's harbour, the trade routes to the East had transformed the city into a hive of seafront activity. The discovery of gold and diamonds in South Africa meant that the first section of harbour, the Alfred Basin, had to be added to and the Victoria Basin was built. (* Prince Alfred was Queen Victoria's second son)The construction of the two harbour basins took place between 1860 and 1920, and the area is notable for its outstanding heritage buildings. It retains the charm of Victorian industrial architecture and the scale of a harbour built for sail and the early days of steam travel. In the 1970s, containerisation had developed worldwide as the major method of cargo handling and transportation. It was this, together with South Africa's economic isolation at the time and the reopening of the Suez Canal, that led to a sharp reduction in the utilisation of land and harbour facilities surrounding the Victoria & Alfred Basins. At the time, Transnet was in the process of rationalising harbour facilities and reviewing its harbour and other land holdings with particular emphasis on the returns being generated by these assets.

Capetown Two Oceans Acquarium Victoria and Alfred Quays SOUTH AFRICA 2003
FROM WHEELCHAIR NOMAD DIARY... SS 2003 We checked out at 11.00 am and drove to the Protea Pier Hotel, which took two hours to check us in. At 1.00 am we drove to the Victoria and Alfred Quay, a magnificent collection of shops and home of Two Worlds Aquarium. The weather was miserable, rain, high winds and about eight degrees Celsius. I got drenched and cold while being pushed from our car to the Aquarium, but found their presentation world-class. I enjoyed the seals, penguins, and the several large sharks, which swam in circles in a multi-story pool with glass walls reaching beyond and over our heads. After the Aquarium, we did the Maritime Museum which was very poor, and then sat in front of a roaring hot fire at Mitchells Scottish Pub enjoying a Guinness, drying off and getting warm. Its almost 5.00 pm. Why dont we eat here, I suggested. We chose the Fishermans Restaurant and Sushi Bar, which served up a hot very delicious Seafood Currie and an enormous glass of excellent house red. Richard ate sushi and curried prawns, saying, This restaurant is really good. Im surprised its not packed. I agreed. We filled the car with gas, after driving along rolls of high-rise condominiums of the wealthy overlooking a threatening Indian Ocean, which broke in magnificent breakers on the rocky coastline in high winds.
