TestTown Dunfermline 2013 - the Finals week
TestTown is an innovation challenge. TestTown is an opportunity for young people to make their mark. TestTown's purpose is to inspire an enterprising mindset in young people, civic and community organisations.
TestTown, a concept devised and supported by the Carnegie UK Trust, encouraged young entrepreneurs aged 16 to 30 to create innovative new businesses to help bring energy back to flagging town centres. Over 550 young people applied, with eleven teams finally taking part in a weekend-long challenge in Dunfermline, starting on 28th June.
The winner of the top prize of £10,000 was Back on the High Street, run by Jenna Fairgrieve (25) from Falkirk and Emma Pauley (26) from Dunfermline. Their idea was to create low rent retail space for local crafters enabling them to sell handmade items on the high street. Crafters can pay for a shelf, or number of shelves for a weekly or monthly period, allowing them to generate money in their own local communities rather than resorting to online selling.
The intention now is to work with local planners and policy makers to help replicate the project across other parts of the country and to help encourage more confidence and support for the entrepreneurial spirit.
Jim Metcalfe, Practice and Development Manager at Carnegie UK Trust said:
We believe that replicating TestTown in other areas of the country will provide a catalyst for regeneration on British high streets. We'll be sharing our experience and learnings from TestTown across the UK to help spark some fresh ideas and thinking. Once again congratulations to all who took part and supported our entrepreneurs!
Get involved in the TestTown discussion on Twitter @testtown2013, on Facebook and at testtown.org.uk for more information on all the winners.
