EGYPT: EXPLORING CENTRAL CAIRO: TOP PLACES TO SEE/VISIT, NEGATIVE ASPECTS ☹️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's walk around the central area of Cairo which is the capital and largest city of Egypt. The city's metropolitan area is the largest in the Middle East and the Arab world, and the 15th-largest in the world, and is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area. Located near the Nile Delta, Cairo has a population of 6.76 million spread over 453 square kilometers (175 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. An additional 9.5 million inhabitants live in close proximity to the city. Cairo, like many other mega-cities, suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, as you will see in this video.
Egypt, a country linking northeast Africa with the Middle East, dates to the time of the pharaohs. Millennia-old monuments sit along the fertile Nile River Valley, including Giza's colossal Pyramids and Great Sphinx as well as Luxor's hieroglyph-lined Karnak Temple and Valley of the Kings tombs. The capital, Cairo, is home to Ottoman landmarks like Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities.

Cairo Citadel & Muhammad Ali Mosque Cairo, Egypt
The Saladin Citadel of Cairo is one of the most popular
tourist attractions of Cairo, Egypt. The Citadel houses a
number of museums, ancient mosques and other sites. The
Citadel is one of the world's greatest monuments to
medieval warfare, as well as a highly visible landmark on
Cairo's eastern skyline. The Muhammad Ali mosque,
situated on the summit of the citadel, this Ottoman mosque,
the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century, is,
with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most
visible mosque in Cairo. The mosque was built in memory of
Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali's oldest son, who died in 1816.
Though certainly not one of the most ancient mosques in
Cairo, nor even one of the most historic, because of its
grandeur and its location in the Citadel, the Mosque of
Muhammad Ali is the most popular Islamic mosque among
tourists. This mosque is also sometimes referred to as the
Alabaster Mosque.

Egypt adventure #17 (Virgin Mary Tree, Islamic Cairo, Citadel of saladin, el moez st)
Egypt adventure #17 (Virgin Mary Tree, Islamic Cairo, Citadel of saladin, el moez st)
The Tree of the Virgin is a sycamore tree in the El Matareya suburb of Cairo, Egypt. According to local beliefs, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph stopped at El Matareya (then a small village) on the Flight into Egypt. Mary rested against the tree and a spring of water sprang up near it for Mary to wash Jesus. For many years its bark was taken by Christians in the belief that it had miraculous properties. It has been a place of pilgrimage for Coptic Christians for many centuries, who come to pray by it or touch it, believing that it will heal illness. Next to the tree is a small chapel in El Matareya
The Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Salah ad-Din is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries.
Islamic Cairo (Arabic: قاهرة المعز, meaning: Al-Mu'izz's Cairo) is a part of central Cairo around the old walled city and around the Citadel of Cairo which is characterized by hundreds of mosques, tombs, madrasas, mansions, caravanserais, and fortifications dating from the Islamic era.In 1979, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed Historic Cairo a World Cultural Heritage site, as one of the world's oldest Islamic cities, with its famous mosques, madrasas, hammams and fountains and the new centre of the Islamic world, reaching its golden age in the 14th century.
Bab Zuweila is one of three remaining gates in the walls of the Old City of Cairo, the capital of Egypt. It was also known as Bawabbat al-Mitwali during the Ottoman period, and is sometimes spelled Bab Zuwayla. It is considered one of the major landmarks of the city and is the last remaining southern gate from the walls of Fatimid Cairo in the 11th and 12th century

MOSQUE OF MOHAMMID ALI CAIRO EGYPT
FROM WHEELCHAIR NOMAD DIARY...2003 EE The mosque itself located in the citadel, surrounded by defensive stonewalls, was really large and required an entrance fee of $5.00. The citadel was home to Egypts rulers for seven hundred years, begun in 1176 by Saladin as a defence against the Crusaders. It eventually became a military garrison, used by the British and Egyptians. The guide told us, Were visiting the Mosque of Mohammed Ali, built from 1830 to 1848, where Mohammed lies buried in a marble tomb to the right of the door. The mosques interior, covered with Egyptian carpets and illuminated by gigantic heavy chandeliers, was constructed in a Turkish style like the mosques I have visited in 1972 and 1975 in Istanbul. Unlike Gothic cathedrals, the structure was square with three enormous domes, inlaid with silver and gold, forming the structures ceiling. Outside the mosque, we had an excellent view of the city, from a broad terrace; the city was foggy with pollution. A second mosque was below us, and the white domes of Cairos oldest mosque were visible in the distance. The heat was oppressive and suffocating, but no worse than a hot Perth summer day, and I quickly opted to return to the air-conditioned car.
