Sunrise in ALISHAN | EasyCard Fail, Bento Boxes, Belly Rubs & Kaohsiung Luck | 12 Days in Taiwan EP2
In this second episode, we hit the road and leave Taipei for the famous forests and mountains of Alishan before heading over to Taiwan's second largest city, Kaohsiung.
You never know what's going to happen when you're on the road and these few days are no exception. Just when I thought I had bought the right card for my wife, turns out it wasn't an EasyCard at all. icash2.0 didn't work on the bus we were taking up to Alishan and we learned the hard way. Once up in Alishan, we woke up ridiculously early for the sunrise and while it looked like it was going to happen, that ended up being a fail as well. Still, we had a great time hiking through the forest the reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings (Entwood or Mirkwood, take your pick). When we finally made it to Kaohsiung, we were pleasantly surprised by a city that is much less hectic and crowded than Taipei. This allowed us to freely explore places like the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, and the super artsy Pier-2.

Located in the centre of Taiwan is the legendary Alishan Forest Railway that is extremely popular with both railway enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The starting point of the fascinating journey into the rainforests and mountain world of Taiwan is Chiayi.When visiting Chiayi it is a must to visit the authentic marketplace in which there is just about everything. The markets have retained their original charm and whether simple or exotic the food is simply delicious. The Alishan Express has travelled between Chiayi and the mountain station of Chushan, since 1986. The route becomes steeper and steeper as the narrow gauge train travels tentatively into the higher regions and also into changing weather. Luxury is the last thing that can be expected on the Alishan Express as the carriages are extremely basic. The town of Alishan was named after the mountains of the same name and in recent years it has developed into one of the most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan. The Giant Trees Trail has become popular with walkers. It leads through an unusual forest that is full of thousands of years old trees, the “Trees Of Three Generations“, ancient trees that have developed in a fascinating way. The first sunbeams mark the next day in the mountains when the legendary Alishan Forest Railway will bring with it new visitors who will experience the unique and wonderful mountain world of Alishan.

Im Herzen Taiwans verkehrt die legendäre Alishan Forest Railway| die bei Eisenbahnliebhabern als auch Naturbegeisterten gleichermaßen beliebt ist. Der Ausgangspunkt unsere faszinierenden Reise in den Regenwald und die Bergwelt von Taiwan ist Chiayi.
Der größte Anziehungspunkt dieser Stadt ist sicherlich der authentische Marktplatz| wo es einfach alles zu kaufen gibt. Der Markt hat seinen ursprünglichen Charme behalten und die Speisen| die hier angeboten werden| sind wahrhaft exotische Köstlichkeiten.
Seit dem Jahr 1986 verkehrt der Alishan Express zwischen Chiayi und der Bergstation Chushan. Die Strecke wird zunehmend steiler und die Schmalspurbahn keucht langsam hinauf in höhere Regionen und in eine völlig andere Wetterlage.
Luxus ist das letzte| das auf einer Reise mit dem Alishan Express erwartete werden kann| denn die Waggons sind sehr einfach ausgestattet. Die Stadt Alishan wurde nach den gleichnamigen Bergen benannt| und in den letzten Jahren hat sie sich zu einer der beliebtesten Touristenattraktionen Taiwans entwickelt.
Der Giant Trees Trail ist sehr beliebt bei Spaziergängern. Er führt durch einen einzigartigen Wald voller tausend Jahre alter Bäume| den 'Bäumen der drei Generationen'|… uralte Zypressen| die beim Wachsen wunderbare Formen gebildet haben.

【Alishan Forest Railway】The Train Cab Ride View (第二分道-祝山)
This is the cabin ride view of train NO.371. This trip is from 2nd Switch to Chushan(祝山). Chushan Station is the highest point of Taiwan Railway (the elevation is 2,451 meters). On the way, the train will take 2 switchbacks to climb the highest point. Train will pass through Erwanping(二萬平), Sacred Tree(神木, the 3rd Switch), Alishan(阿里山, the 4th Switch), Zhaoping(沼平), Cross Switch(十字分道), and Dueigaoyue(對高岳).

Alishan Taiwan Forest Railway
Alishan, or “Mount Ali” is the most-visited national park in Taiwan. It is a range of mountains on Taiwan’s spine, with its expansive altitude covering subtropical, temperate and frigid zones. Japanese built narrow-gauge train zig zags through the mountain hills passing various hiking routes, sunrise points. In particular, Alishan boasts the giant tree trail, where the million-old cypress can be found. The forests on Alishan are regularly shrouded in mist, producing mystical scenes reminiscent of classical Chinese paintings.

Taiwan Alishan Forest Railway, 23rd November 2016
A trip on the Alishan Forest Railway between Chiayi and Fenqihu on 23rd November 2016. The weather was rain and clouds so the view was poor most of the time. The train is formed of five air conditioned coaches with the locomotive at the rear pushing the train uphill. The leading coach is fitted with driving equipment to control the locomotive. Its not the best video but it is worth travelling to Taiwan to experience. At Fenqihu there is a museum with steam engines and a diesel. When I visited the line was closed beyond Fenqihu due to storm damage on the line. I have no idea if it will reopen.

At an elevation of more than 2,000 meters, riding the train from Alishan Station to Zhaoping Station is a must for every traveller who visits the Alishan Forest Recreation Area. Tall cypress trees surround the railway tracks all year round, but in spring the sight of Tokyo cherry blossoms give more reasons to visit this place.
