Sunrise in ALISHAN | EasyCard Fail, Bento Boxes, Belly Rubs & Kaohsiung Luck | 12 Days in Taiwan EP2
In this second episode, we hit the road and leave Taipei for the famous forests and mountains of Alishan before heading over to Taiwan's second largest city, Kaohsiung.
You never know what's going to happen when you're on the road and these few days are no exception. Just when I thought I had bought the right card for my wife, turns out it wasn't an EasyCard at all. icash2.0 didn't work on the bus we were taking up to Alishan and we learned the hard way. Once up in Alishan, we woke up ridiculously early for the sunrise and while it looked like it was going to happen, that ended up being a fail as well. Still, we had a great time hiking through the forest the reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings (Entwood or Mirkwood, take your pick). When we finally made it to Kaohsiung, we were pleasantly surprised by a city that is much less hectic and crowded than Taipei. This allowed us to freely explore places like the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, and the super artsy Pier-2.

We took a train from Taipei Main Station to Chiayi Station, the starting point of the popular Alishan Forest Railway. Runs through the beautiful and breathtaking forest and no rush, so you can enjoy the scenery!

Alishan National Scenic Area (Forest Recreation Area)
(阿里山國家風景區 (森林休闲区))
Alishan National Scenic Area also known as Mount Ali. It is a very popular tourist attraction in Taiwan, very famous for the production of high mountain tea and for the iconic sea of clouds.
Alishan, located in Chiayi County in southern Taiwan, is about 3-3.5 hours drive from Sun Moon Lake Area. Alishan is a nature preserve with an area of 415 km2, famed for extraordinary landscapes, aboriginal cultures, waterfalls, high mountain tea, wasabi (green mustard root), fireflies, and unparalleled beauties such as sea of clouds, sunset and sunrise sceneries, making it a must-see for your Taiwan travel. Alishan spans a broad range in altitude with its towns on the lower elevations sharing the same subtropical and tropical climate as the rest of southern Taiwan, and temperate and alpine as the elevation increase. Slow down your pace, plan a few days at Alishan to discover the nature beauties of the area, and enjoy a truly incredible experience on the Alishan Forest Railway from Alishan Train Station to Zhaoping and Alishan Sacred Tree. Alishan Forest Railway is one of the world’s three remaining forest railways.
Alishan Forest Recreation Area is at the 89K point of the Alishan Highway and at the end of the Alishan Mountain Railway. Alishan itself doesn’t have a peak and it is actually composed of 18 mountains such as Jialun Mountain, Zhu Mountain, and Data Mountain etc.
The climate doesn’t change much through the year, with the average temperature around 10C, and lows of -3 in winter. Cool in summer, it is good place to escape the heat of the lowlands, and the blackflies. The recreation area has more than 1000 sakura cherry blossom trees. Most people will only be familiar with the area between the new and the old station (Zhaoping Station). With red pillars like a Chinese palace the new station is the largest wooden station in Taiwan. As soon as alighting from the train, visitors see the unique semi-arched wooden pillars that support the shelter. There is a scenery viewing platform in front of the station from which the cloud sea, sunset glow and sunset can be watched and the different layers of rock on Ta Mountain clearly seen.
Alishan is famous for five wonders: the railway, forest, cloud sea, sunrise and sunset glow. Its scenic spots can be divided into three areas, the recreation area itself, the second Zhushan and Duigaoyue Sunrise Viewing Trail, and third the Mianyue line, Data Mountain Trail, the A-Ji traverse and the A-Feng traverse.

Taiwan 2019 : Spring in Alishan
Exact Date: March 30, 2019
Alishan National Forest Recreation Area
Alishan National Scenic Area is in central Taiwan. It's dominated by the Alishan Mountains, which feature cloud-ringed peaks and green valleys. The area is home to Tsou aboriginal villages, known for tea production. A narrow-gauge train, part of the Alishan Forest Railway, runs through high-altitude forests. The Giant Tree Plank Trail boardwalk winds past huge cypress trees, including the fallen Alishan Sacred Tree.
Alishan National Scenic Area (阿里山国家风景区) | Travel Guide
Alishan is world-famous for having “five wonders; and they are Alishan Forest Railway, the forest trail, sunrise, sunset and Sea of clouds. This national park is considered the most representative of Taiwan’s tourist destinations both domestically and globally.
Alishan National Scenic Area also known as Mount Ali. It is a very popular tourist attraction in Taiwan, very famous for the production of high mountain tea and for the iconic sea of clouds.
A vantage spot over 2,600 meters above sea level, way higher than the clouds in fact, is the best place to enjoy these two natural attractions.
You need to wake up at 03:30 a.m. if you want to see the sunrise. Highly recommend you to take about 20 minute to walk to the Mt. Ogasawara Viewing Point小笠原山秘境(2488 above sea level) for better view. The scenery is so unforgettable. The atmosphere of people waiting for sunrise is great.
A sea of clouds is an overcast layer of clouds, viewed from above, with a relatively uniform top which shows undulations of very different lengths resembling waves. A sea of fog is formed from stratus clouds or fog and does not show undulations.
In both cases, the phenomenon looks very similar to the open ocean. The comparison is even more complete if some mountain peaks rise above the clouds, thus resembling islands.
Greater Tashan Trail (大塔山) The Greater Tashan is the highest of the Tashan peaks, at 2663 m. Depending on the weather, you will either have a wide vista from the observation platform at the top, or will admire a sea of clouds. A good trail leads up to the peak and takes about 1½-2 hours going up from its entry point nearby the Two Sisters Pond, a bit less going down again. The trail is blissfully free of tour groups due to its medium difficulty, with some quite steep stairs on the way, but it should be doable for anyone in decent walking shape. Bring something to drink and appropriate sun protection, as even if Alishan village is cloudy, the peak can still bask in full sun due to its higher altitude.
The Alishan Sacred Tree is one of the most notable Alishan attractions. The tree is located at the Sacred Tree (Shenmu) Railway Station with an elevation over 2000 meters above sea level. The Sacred Tree is known as Shenmu in Mandarin with an age over 3,000 years. This giant tree and dozens of younger generations of giant trees are one of the top five Alishan must-see sceneries along with sunrise, sunset, forest railway, and sea of clouds.
Ciyun Temple is one of the best places in Alishan to view the cloud sea, the red clouds of evening and the sunset.
Ticket Fare: 150NT (One way),you can purchase the ticket on Chiayi Station,Fenchihu station, 711 and on Alishan Railway Station.

A Trip to Alishan Mountain
Title: A Trip to Alishan Mountain
Host: Horacio Kuan
Producer: HK Channel
Director: Ms.Thompson
Date: 2017 May 28
Details:
Hi, everyone! Welcome to the HK Channel. My name is Horacio and I am the host for today! Today, we are going to take you to a trip to Taiwan Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. It is a mountain resort and natural preserve located in the mountains of Chiayi County. The climate is due to your elevation, so remember to bring more clothes to wear as you go up the mountain. People had said that the top five wonders in Aishan included the sacred trees, sunrise, sunset, forest railway, and the sea of clouds.
Alishan Forest Railway was built by the Japanese during their colony. The railway, originally constructed for logging, is itself a tourist attraction with unique Z-shaped switchbacks, 50 tunnels, and over 77 wooden bridges. There are actually several accidents that killed hundreds of people in the past years. You know what; you could actually walk on the railway while there are no trains passing by.
Sacred trees are one of the most famous attractions in Taiwan. There are several sacred trees that are destroyed by the typhoons. However, we still keep the destroyed trees as an attraction for visitors to understand how powerful a typhoon could be. While walking through those tall trees, I thought we have arrived to heaven. The trees are so special that they have different shapes and even some funny historical stories.
Alishan Sianglin Sacred Tree is one of the oldest, tallest, and thickest sacred trees in the region. Sianglin was about two thousands and three hundred years old with its height of forty five meters. This tree will help us pass down the legacy of the now fallen Alishan Sacred Tree. Plus, there are actually trees that have three generations, which amazed me a lot.
Overall, let us just enjoy the beauty in this wonderful place.
All in all, walking through this wonderful landscape totally make me release my stress from school. I think I am very lucky that I get to go with my families. In many ancient Chinese writing, they phrased that we can always learn things no matter where you go. We don’t need to sit on a chair and stare at the book for hours. Looking at those amazing views can make us learn too. Indeed, I enjoy my trip to Alishan Mountain and I hope I could visit there again. I hope you enjoy the channel and feel free to give any commands about our channel! Bye and see you next time!

Alishan Forest Railway and recreation area to see big price hikes this May
Alishan Forest Recreation Area, one of the most scenic spots in Taiwan is adjusting its prices in May for the first time in 20 years. To reflect actual costs, tickets for foreign visitors will increased from NT$200 to NT$300. The prices for the whole route on the Alishan Forest Railway will also be hiked from NT$399 to NT$600. For Chinese visitors, Alishan is one of the places they can’t miss. Alishan Forest Recreation Area received 2.71 million visitors last year alone, with more than 1 million being foreign visitors. This has resulted in escalating maintenance costs. Liu Jin-yuanAlishan Forest RailwayThe authorities used a lot of funds to repair and improve the facilities at the recreation area. Our price adjustment is for foreign visitors with the price being hiked by NT$100.Besides the tickets to the recreation area, the Alishan Forest Railway was ravaged by Typhoon Morakot a few years ago with the cost of reconstruction being as high as NT$1bn. To reflect this cost, the ticket prices will be readjusted across the board, starting from May 1.Liu Jin-yuanAlishan Forest RailwayIt’s most appropriate to adjust the tickets from NT$399 to NT$600. The price from Chiayi Railway Station to the Fengchi Lake Station is now NT$240 and will be NT$384 from May 1.Alishan Forest Recreation Area also becomes the first national forest recreation area in Taiwan to adopt the two-tier pricing program. Authorities hope this policy can improve the quality of tourism services in the area.

Alishan train ride from Alishan Station to Zhaoping Station / Taiwan
A train ride at Taiwan's highest railway line
At an elevation of more than 2,000 meters, riding the train from Alishan Station to Zhaoping Station is a must for every traveller who visits the Alishan Forest Recreation Area. Tall cypress trees surround the railway tracks all year round, but in spring the sight of Tokyo cherry blossoms give more reasons to visit this place.
