How China is crushing the Uighurs | The Economist
China's Muslim Uighurs face systematic oppression from their own government. Their home province of Xinjiang has been turned into a police state—an estimated one million of them are detained in camps where they are brainwashed. How and why are China's leaders doing this?

Coronavirus outbreaks: Situation in wuhan china right now.
#wuhan #china #coronavirus
The Chinese government announced on Saturday that the death toll has jumped to 41 as 1,287 confirmed cases of the deadly virus.
Construction began on the night of January 23 for a new specialized hospital for coronavirus patients in central China's Wuhan City. The hospital is designed to have an area of 25,000 square meters with 1,000 beds and will be put into use by February 3, officials said.
The special hospital is being built in the Caidian District in the western suburb of the city.
According to officials, the hospital will follow the building model of the Xiaotangshan Hospital. Beijing built the Xiaotangshan Hospital, a temporary medical center, to treat and control Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which had spread rapidly on the Chinese mainland in 2003. The hospital was completed in seven days and admitted one-seventh of the SARS patients in the country within two months, creating a miracle in the history of medicine.
China broadened on Friday its unprecedented, open-ended lockdowns to encompass more than 20.5 million people as the government tries to contain a deadly new virus that has killed at least 26 people and infected about 830 others.
At the same time, Beijing confirmed two coronavirus deaths outside of Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak.
At least six cities were also added to the list of places under lockdown, all in central China's Hubei province, where the illness originated. That brings to at least 10 the number of cities covered in the lockdown order.
In Wuhan, where the lockdown began early on Thursday, normally bustling streets, malls and other public spaces were eerily quiet. Masks were mandatory in public.
The railway station and the airport were closed, and ferry, subway and bus services were halted; police checked all incoming vehicles but did not close off the roads.
The other cities under lockdown as of Friday morning are near Wuhan, but authorities were taking precautions around the country.
In the capital, Beijing, major public events were cancelled indefinitely, including traditional temple fairs that are a staple of Lunar New Year celebrations.
The Forbidden City, the palace complex in Beijing that is now a museum, announced it will close indefinitely on Saturday.
Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler, reporting from Beijing, said the other big concern is when the travellers, who have already gone back to the provinces, will return to the cities after the holidays.
Most of the deaths and confirmed cases were concentrated in Hubei. But authorities on Friday also confirmed the first case outside the province.
The health commission in Hebei, a northern province bordering Beijing, said an 80-year-old man died after returning from a two-month stay in Wuhan to see relatives.
What you can Buy in Chinese Wet Market? It's Disgusting,Amazing and Fascinating!
Chinese wet markets
Wet markets were traditionally places that sold dead and live animals out in the open. This includes poultry, fish, reptiles, and pigs. However, since SARS, large animals and poultry are not as commonly found in the markets in Hong Kong, though live fish, shellfish, and frogs are widely available. Some markets also sell exotic animals.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are also available. Wet markets also generally include butcher shops with fresh meat.
The fresh meat and fish sections are separate from the fruit and vegetable stalls.
Many markets also have stalls that sell dried goods, flowers, and processed tofu as well as cooked meat.

Yad Vashem keeps the memory of the Holocaust alive | DW News
Dozens of leaders from around the world are gathering in Jerusalem ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday. They're also marking 75 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. The millions of Jews murdered in the Holocaust -- or the Shoah as it's also called are commemorated at the Yad Vashem memorial. DW's Tania Krämer visited Yad Vashem and saw how it's keeping the memory of the Holocaust's victims alive for younger generations.

Chinese Woman Has Been Living in a Cave for 2 Years After Her Family Abandoned Her- Du Meiying
Photographs of an abandoned old woman living in a cave have gone viral on Chinese social media, after she was spotted there by locals. When interviewed, 52-year-old Du Meiying said that she had been living in the damp cave for two years, since her family was going through a financial crisis and could no longer support her.
Du had initially lived in a room at a council house, but had to leave the place after she had a row with her elderly neighbors. With nowhere else to go, she was forced to move into a 100-sq-meter cave on the outskirts of Yichang city, in Hubei province. The woman has managed to keep herself alive for three years by collecting rainwater to drink, cook and clean with. For food, she grows cabbages outside the cave using seeds donated by a local farmer. She’s also made a bed for herself using bamboo canes, and an abandoned wooden crate serves as her table.
Taking the reins: Traditional Chinese copper artist seeks successor
One man preserving the ancient Chinese art of copper work is on the look-out for someone to take over the craft from him. 82-year-old Zeng Xiango has a shop in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province where he makes and sells everything from bowls to animals to scale models of buildings, all crafted in gleaming copper.
