Artist Julia Christensen works w/ NASA scientists on spaceship & art concepts // Art+Technology Lab
Julia Christensen’s ongoing project, Upgrade Available, investigates how “upgrade culture”—the perceived relentless need to endlessly upgrade electronics and recordable media to remain relevant—impacts life on a range of time scales. The artist’s work with the LACMA Art + Technology Lab has allowed her to explore how upgrade culture impacts institutional operations at the scale of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her work at LACMA additionally led her to a collaboration with scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she is helping envision long-term space mission concepts that defy our current measure of technological obsolescence. At JPL’s Innovation Foundry, Julia has collaborated on spaceship/art concepts for a CubeSat with a 200-year operational lifespan, and an interstellar spacecraft that would travel to Proxima b, 4.2 light years from Earth.

HostDime's USA Data Center Tour
Thank you for taking the time to check out our new and improved HostDime datacenter tour. Enjoy!
Transcript:
Welcome to DimeNOC, HostDime's privately owned and operated enterprise datacenter located in beautiful Orlando Florida. Our 25,000 square foot facility was designed from the ground up for the utmost in security, reliability and uptime.
Features such as biometric access points at all entrances ensures that access is granted only to those approved by the HostDime security team.
Founded in 2001, HostDime has positioned itself to be an industry leader in the global datacenter market with over 5 million domains on our network.
Hostdime offers fully managed cloud hosting services including Business Hosting, Reseller, VPS, Dedicated Server and Colocation options. All services are completely customizable to meet any need.
Our datacenter floor currently houses over 9000 servers, with the power and infrastructure in place to accommodate nearly double that amount. Our central server area features hot and cold aisle containment through the use of electrorack components. This increases energy efficiency on the floor and is one of the many features we've implemented as part of our green initiative. Cooling is provided through a fully enclosed, overhead duct system while the space under the raised floor is dedicated to cabling and power distribution.
In 2013 HostDime expanded our datacenter to accommodate the growing need for colocation in Florida. This newly built colocation room features independent cooling and cabling as well as access to 120 or 208 volt A & B redundant power. Cabinets feature independently locking quarter, half and full cabinets so servers can only be accessed by their owners. This has also allowed us to quarantine access to our other servers, where only HostDime employees and escorted guests may enter.
DimeNoc is consistently ranked as one of the premier facilities in the Southern United States thanks to multiple path network fiber into HostDime's network room. Also known as the Meet Me room, this is where our Tier 1 network bandwidth providers connect into our facility. Our carrier neutrality allows 10G connectivity to our clients.
The entire server floor, network room and colocation room are cooled by 11 high powered Air conditioning units to keep all hardware running at optimum performance. Units are quarantined in their own rooms to increase efficiency and decrease noise.
HostDime's power room is one of the highlights of our facility. The site has several Uninterruptible Power Supply systems featuring redundant battery cabinets and full maintenance bypass switches. In the event of a power anomaly detected by the UPS, the critical load is supplied by the battery strings. In the rare event that utility power becomes unavailable, the site has multiple automatic transfer switches that can switch the critical load over to multiple emergency diesel power generators. This will ensure that clean constant power is always delivered to the facility.
HostDime's Development Operations center is the hub for our in-house developers. Our developers work on critical operation components that allow customers to easily purchase products, access tickets, and modify their services. Their commitment to research and development ensures that HostDime remains on the cutting edge of new technologies.
HostDime builds hundreds of servers from the ground up every month at the DimeNOC Datacenter.
Our specially designed build room allows for an array of servers to be built, modified and repaired at any time. This results in quicker server deployments and faster repair times, ultimately reducing downtime for you and your clients.
Once your server is operational, you'll get round-the-clock full service and support from our NOC Technicians, System Administrators, and Abuse and Security Teams. Our experienced technical support and management staff are available whenever you need them to diagnose any software, hardware or network issues. They also monitor uptime and connectivity to the entire infrastructure of the facility, using our proprietary monitoring software.
Colocation clients have specialized access to our facility. A HostDime team member will issue personal badges to give clients access to the datacenter.
This includes the reception area, and a state-of-the-art conference room for business meetings and networking where you can take advantage of the latest in video and media display technology.
Our client colocation lounge allows customers to unrack their own equipment and work on their servers in a quiet, comfortable environment.
Dozens of security cameras, monitored 24/7, provide a watchful eye to make sure all hardware is secure.

Shadow Industry Official Trailer
Shadow Industry is a short film created by Director Erik Pluemer and Co-Director Peter Honore that Chronicles the abduction and induction of a young lady named Tracey Clemments. The Purpose of the film is educate and inform the populace about the reality of the sex trafficking industry here in America.
Based in South Florida, Hepzibah House is a forthcoming faith-based safe house and multi-faceted residential treatment facility for those who have been freed from human trafficking. This population is in urgent need of humanitarian intervention in both services and resources. Most resources devoted to addressing human trafficking problems are sent outside the United States, leaving very limited funding available locally.
Hepzibah House's therapeutic interventions will include art, music, talk and equine therapy, integrating both secular and faith-based applications. While addressing the mental and emotional repercussions of having survived human trafficking, Hepzibah House will also teach English as a second language, and basic skills for securing jobs and independent living, preparing them for a future beyond this tragic experience.
While the most lucrative criminal enterprise in the world is the illegal drug trade, human trafficking is currently second and expected to overtake drug trafficking in the next few years, due to lowered legal risks and higher profitability (Stop the Traffik). A kilo of cocaine may be sold once; a human may be sold again, and again, and again, ensuring the thriving future of this horrific enterprise.
The United States is a major destination country for trafficked individuals. Although estimations vary, between 15,000 and 60,000 foreign nationals are trafficked into our nation annually (Human Trafficking). Florida is a strategic destination point for victims of human trafficking: In FY 2002, approximately 19% of federally 'certified' trafficking victims who received benefits and services from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services lived in Florida (U.S. Department of Justice, 2004) (Florida Department of Law Enforcement).
In global terms, human trafficking was estimated to be a $10 billion dollar industry by the U.S Department of Justice in 2006. Up to 80% of trafficked persons are women and children, the majority of which are exploited in the sex industry. The state of Florida has the third highest population of trafficked individuals in the United States.

This is WYNWOOD Miami. What To Do + Where To Eat ????Tour the Wynwood Walls.
We spend an afternoon exploring one of the trendiest and up and coming neighbourhoods of Miami, Wynwood District!
We start off walking through the streets to see all the graffiti and made our way to Wynwood Walls. Wynwood Walls features street art from artists all around the the world and has one of the largest concentrations of street art in one place that we’ve ever seen!
After that we hit the streets again to explore the unique shops. We came across an art gallery called Plant the Future where all the art incorporates plants in some form.
Lastly we headed Wynwood Yard, a sort of pop-up hub with bars, food trucks and some shops. We were hungry at this point so had some of the most delicious tacos ever and some Asian street food as well as some craft beer.
ABOUT WYNWOOD MIAMI
Wynwood is an eclectic district in the urban core of Miami, Florida. It is home to art galleries, retail stores, antique shops, eclectic bars, artisanal eateries and one of the largest open-air street-art installations in the world.
Throughout the mid-to-late 1900s, Wynwood was an enclave for Caribbean immigrants and home to Miami’s Garment District. Following a decade of economic exodus and depression, in the early 2000s, forward thinking developers and property owners rehabilitated neglected warehouses, shuttered factories, and other unused buildings, transforming them into the innovative businesses that are visible today.
However, it is street art that helped spark Wynwood’s renaissance. Since the introduction of Second Saturday Art Walk and the arrival of Art Basel (2002), the influence and relevance of the arts community in Wynwood has become undeniable. Artists from around the world have sought inspiration in the area’s windowless facades and used them as canvases to showcase their work, leading to the vivid murals that adorn the district.
Today, Wynwood is recognized globally as a premier destination for art, fashion, innovation and creative enterprise. It is one of the largest and most prominent creative communities in the United States, and where a new generation of creative and entrepreneurs want to live, work, eat, play and learn.

8 REASONS TO MOVE TO NORTH CAROLINA
Moving to to North Carolina is becoming a very popular choice for many people searching for jobs, a simpler life, and/or a lower standard of living! Should you move to North Carolina? I’m going to break down why to move to NC and what it has to offer.
Geographically speaking, it has it all
North Carolina has oceans, mountains, and everything in between! If their is a particular type of:
Scenery that you like
Lifestyle you wish to live that requires a beach or mountains
These are all with a small distance from each other, so long drives aren’t necessary
2. Job opportunities
North Carolina is home is many employers both large and small. North Carolina is by no means “po dunk” and can provide you with a comfortable living with the right skills.
Raleigh is home to RTP, one of the largest, high-tech research parks in the United States. Home to giants such as GlaxoSmithKline and Cisco systems.
Charlotte, NC is the 3rd biggest financial center in the US. Charlotte, NC is home to Bank of America, Duke Energy, and Nucor Steel.
Greensboro, NC which is home to many corporate giants like Honda, Volvo, and Mack Trucks.
3. Schools
North Carolina is known for it’s universities both private and public. As well as their affordability! NC school system has many out-of-state students due to the affordability.
Duke University
NC State University
UNC Chapel Hill
UNC Asheville
East Carolina University
UNC Wilmington
4. Culture
Many don’t think of NC as a cultural epicenter, but with colleges, art institutions, film, and just a unique overall vibe; North Carolina is far from “country” and can offer even the most sophisticated with something entertaining.
Wilmington, NC is the San Diego of the south where everybody is attractive and drinks health shakes
Durham. NC which has more college educated people per ca-pita then anywhere else in the US
Charlotte, NC downtown where you can live the fast yuppy lifestyle
Mt. Airy, NC where the Andy Griffith Show is based off of if you enjoy a slower paced, rural town
5. Lower Standard of Living (In Most Cities)
One of the biggest reasons I decided against moving back to California (where I’m originally from), is the standard of living is so high. I stood no chance against being able to pursue my dreams of running a real-estate business. The stakes would have been far greater if I moved back to California!
The average home price in Wilmington, NC is $200K
Gas is $2.50 a gallon
Property insurance is only $.62 per 100 dollars
6. Great for business both large and small
Not only is NC great for those seeking employment, but it is also great for those starting businesses.
Booming population with far less competition in comparison to large cities. NC has a startup exit rate of less then 2.7% meaning that business are starting and staying.
Large Businesses like manufacturing, data centers, fulfillment centers are offered tax exemptions
Huge labor pool of talent from North Carolina’s huge university system
Minority Ownership in businesses has increased substantially at around %40.
I personally moved to Wilmington, NC and started a small real estate business. It was far less difficult then I expected and I don’t think I could have done so if I move to a larger city.
7. Far Less Developed
Business is great in North Carolina, but too much development can cause a city to lose it’s sense of place. North Carolina has parks everywhere!
NC has 10 national parks in the states which is huge in comparison to it’s relative small size
Last year over 2,000 acres of land were added and this continues to grow
8. Decent Weather (For the price!)
While NC is no California, it does have a sub tropical climate!
Hot, humid summers
Perfect spring and Fall
Short Winters
9. Growth
Not is North Carolina the 10th largest states, but it is also RAPIDLY growing. According to the US Census Bureau, North Carolina is the 13th fastest growing state!
Paul Gauguin: Setting the Polynesian Stage
Seattle Art Museum presents the only United States stop for Gauguin & Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise, a landmark show highlighting the complex relationship between Paul Gauguin's work and the art and culture of Polynesia. The exhibition, on view at SAM Downtown February 9 through April 29, 2012, includes about 50 of Gauguin's brilliantly hued paintings, sculptures and works on paper, which are displayed alongside 60 major examples of Polynesian sculpture that fueled his search for the exotic. Organized by the Art Centre Basel, the show is comprised of works on loan from some of the world's most prestigious museums and private collections.
Gauguin (1848--1903) is one of the most influential and celebrated artists of the late nineteenth century. From early on in his career he yearned for the exotic in both his life and his work. While his Polynesian experience was a defining factor in both his art and his posthumous reputation, many exhibitions devoted to his work have treated the artist's direct relationship with Polynesian art as one small part of his larger enterprise. Through a balanced analysis of Polynesian art alongside Gauguin's works, this exhibition shifts the emphasis and brings Polynesian arts and culture into the center of Gauguin studies.
