April 7, 2012 Russia_Moscow Catholics mark Good Friday
Moscow's Catholics attended a service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on April 6 to mark Good Friday.
The religious festival, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, is observed annually during Holy Week on the Friday before Easter Sunday.
Today we remember the death, the moment of death of Jesus Christ, his crucifixion for the sense of mankind... Christians actually believe that at this moment all the saints of all the people of all times were placed on him. And in this manner God reconciled all people and whole mankind to himself, Father Kirill of Church of the Immaculate Conception, explains.
Russia is home to around 750,000 Roman Catholic believers.

Peter and Paul church in Sevastopol
The Cathedral is located on the Central City’s Hill. It was originally built in 1814 in Greek style, but during the Crimean War it was almost destroyed. Later it was renovated, but during the Soviet times and up to 2006 it served as the city’s archive and the House of Culture. The Cathedral isn’t very big, but makes sublime impression. As it befits the Antique temple, it is raised above the ground floor. There are 44 columns made of Sarmatian limestone placed along the perimeter of the Cathedral. On the east pediment there is a sculpture of the all-seeing eye.

St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse
St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse in Malorichenske began building in January 2004 and on 15 May 2007 it was officially opened. Beautiful St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse is sixty meters tall, stands on the 50 meters cliff above Black Sea and decorated with wonderful frescoes and mosaics.
From gazebo in the form of Flying Dutchman that stands on the edge of the cliff there is perfect view of Crimea southern coast. In addition the complex includes a memorial wall that has nameplates of people who died in the sea. The memorial - a tribute to the memory of sailors, fishermen and travelers who are victims of the sea.
The main icon of St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse is very unusual and has no analogues in the world. This icon of St. Nicholas has knitted knots - no silver or gold as in most of the major icons in Orthodox churches. This icon consisting of half a million knots created by Simferopol actor. He was almost completely paralyzed when doctors advised him to develop hands by knitting. When he made knitted knots for the icon (it took a year and a half to finish the work) almost completely healed. Personally he believed that he was healed by St. Nicholas.
Museum of Accidents on the Waters is located in the basement St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse. Exposition dedicated to the most tragic pages of navigation - disasters on the water with implications for the innumerable victims. The museum is located in 17 rooms (1 000 square meters) each of which tells the story through videos and stands on the most resonant tragedies on the waters of the oceans.
According to statistics maritime disasters - only five to seven percent of deaths are from natural factors - hurricanes, storms, floods. But everything else - the human factor: in the first place - the war, then - booze, negligence, arrogance and disregard important rules.
Construction of St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse dedicated to the memory of all the beacon of sailors and travelers who ever went to sea and all shipwrecks. One of these major disasters occurred with motor ship Armenia during the Second World War in the Black Sea near the Crimean coast.
On 6th of November 1941 motor ship Armenia left the port of Sevastopol with a military hospital and evacuating residents. According to various estimates on the board were from 5 to 7 thousand people. On 7th of November the ship arrived in Yalta where it took on board several hundred people more. At 8:00 motor ship Armenia left Yalta port escorted by two armed boats and two fighters I-153. At 11 hours and 25 minutes the ship was attacked by a single German aircraft Heinkel He-111. The plane flew from the shore and from a distance of 600 meters dropped two torpedoes. One hit in the nose of motor ship Armenia. After 4 minutes the ship Armenia sank.

Russia: Bell of Chersonesos rings in solidarity with Notre Dame
Crimean bell which was once used in Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral was rang in solidarity with France following the devastating fire which partly destroyed the world-famous church, in Sevastopol on Tuesday.
Vice-director of Chersonesos Taurica museum preserve Pavel Kuzenkov rang the Chersonesos Bell to symbolise that Sevastopol is “together with France, we are together with Paris.”
The five-ton bell was originally made of cannons captured from the Ottoman Empire in 1778.
The bell was used in the Notre Dame Cathedral for about 50 years after it was taken by the French army as a war trophy during the Crimean War in the 1850s.
The bell was returned to Russia in 1913 as a sign on friendship between France and Russia.

RAW: Russia Celebrates Russian Airborne Troops' Day With Orthodox Procession At The Red Square
Mass festivities on the occasion of Day of the Prophet Elijah have begun at Red Square in Moscow. The festivities are timed to coincide with Paratroopers’ Day celebrated on August 2 as the Prophet Elijah is believed to be the Patron of Russian Airborne Troops which are currently celebrating their 89th anniversary.
The double holiday includes an early prayer delivered in IIyinka street named after St. Elijah, a liturgy to be delivered at the St. Elijah cathedral and a religious procession, in which paratroopers will take part, that will move from the St. Elijah cathedral to Lobnoye Mesto in Red Square.
The tradition to celebrate Day of St. Prophet Elijah in Red Square dates back to the 17th-century epoch of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich and Patriarch Filaret. In 2003 the old tradition was revived in a new form.

Unidentified gunmen remain outside Crimea's main airport on Friday night
Unidentified gunmen remained outside Crimea's main airport in Simferopol into the night on Friday.
The sudden arrival of men in military uniform patrolling key strategic facilities has prompted Ukraine to accuse Russia of military invasion and occupation - a claim that brought an alarming new dimension to the crisis.
Russia kept silent on the accusations but confirmed that armoured vehicles from its Black Sea Fleet were moving around Crimea for security reasons as the crisis deepened between two of Europe's largest countries.
Ukraine's interior minister said earlier on Friday that Russian navy troops were blocking access to airports in Simferopol and Sevastopol.
According to the Interfax news agency, however, Ukraine's security council chief, Andriy Parubiy, later insisted that the airports were still under Ukrainian control.
Meanwhile, Ukraine International Airlines said it had cancelled flights to and from the Simferopol airport on Friday evening and Saturday because of the closure of the airspace over Crimea.
The announcement did not say who had ordered the closure.
A woman answering the Simferopol airport passenger help line said the airport was not closed but that all flights were cancelled due to the situation in Crimea.
At the airport, the dozens of armed men in military uniforms without markings patrolled the area.
They didn't stop or search people leaving or entering the airport, and refused to talk to journalists.
Any Russian military incursion in Crimea would dramatically raise the stakes in Ukraine's conflict, which saw pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych flee last weekend after three months of anti-government protests.
Yanukovych vowed Friday at a news conference in Russia to keep fighting for the future of Ukraine, though he called any military action unacceptable.
While Kiev and western Ukraine have risen up against Yanukovych, he remains popular in the Russian-speaking eastern and southern regions, where economic and cultural ties with Russia are strong.
The majority of Crimea's population are ethnic Russians, and Yanukovych still enjoys widespread support there.

Two Letters From Crimea - Live Album Trailer
Purchase the album here:
About the event:
The bigger part of this album is the recording of a
concert I played on the evening of the 1st of April 2014 in Sankt Peter in Frankfurt, a former church that has been turned into a - actually very nice - event location and cultural center...
My performance there was part of a larger event:
Sankt Peter regularily takes part in the biannual,
city wide light art fair Luminale - featuring the work of many light artists all over the city. Dedicated busses carry visitors from location to location...
A collective of video and laser artists performed at
Sankt Peter each evening, and they were looking for ambient musicians to accompaign their light and
laser shows.
Via EM musician and sound desginer Bernd-Michael Land, members of the small ambient improvisation community EK Lounge were invited, including myself. There were two solo concerts on each of the first three evenings, and a group improvisation on the last. My turn was the first concert on the third day (a Tuesday), together with Niko Tzoukmanis, aka Microphase.
All in all, it was a wonderful event, peaceful and relaxed. The laser show and light art were beautiful, hypnotizing and technically perfect, the speaker system was a dream, I actually never heard my music sounding live this good...
The background story:
I never met my grandfather Peter Weigel, my mother‘s father. Like many men of his generation, he was drafted in World War II and sent to conquer Russia. From there, he never returned.
He was announced „missing“ after the battle of Stalingrad.
There‘s little more I know about him. He was a farmer and
woodworker from a small village in the Odenwald (...a low mountain range in the upper south west of Germany, roughly between Frankfurt and Heidelberg). My grandmother had only one picture of him, in uniform (poor people in the 1930ies didn‘t own cameras). And two letters he had sent during his two periods of furlough, which he had spent on the Crimean peninsula. I only saw those letters once, when I was still a child...
As a boy, for some reason I had an unusally strong interest in the history of the Second World War. While this faded more into the background over time, this knowledge however always remained close below the surface.
Eventually, after beginning to dabble in music (at a time when the tensions between east and west seemed to cease) I started to imagine to give a „peace concert“ at Wolgograd one day (the
former Stalingrad, where my grandfather - quite likely - had died). This seemed nothing more but a daydream, until an invitation to an ambient festival near Moscow in 2009 (which I couldn‘t accept, though) made seem such an event more likely.
With the recent Crimean crisis however, which started in the spring of 2014, such dreams are threatened by what seems to be a comeback of the cold war. It was at that point when I
received the invitation to perform at St. Peter, and immediately this brought all those ideas and associations outlined above back to my mind. Basically, I thought since I quite likely won‘t ever perform a peace concert at Wolgograd, it may be suitable to dedicate my concert at St. Peter to my grandfather, and to peace with, and in, those eastern countries, and the world in general...
