Sri Lanka: Catholics observe first Sunday mass since Colombo bombings

Security forces stood guard as hundreds of worshippers attended the first Sunday mass at St. Lucia's Cathedral in Colombo after the Easter Sunday bombings claimed 253 lives in April.

Security personnel patrolled the premises and attendees were reportedly searched and frisked for explosives.

The bombings in Sri Lanka on April 21 killed 253 people and injured more than 450 in eight seemingly coordinated explosions that rocked hotels and churches across the country.

Six blasts took place in the Sri Lankan capital while two further explosions occurred in the western city of Negombo and the eastern city of Batticaloa.

In Sri Lanka St. Anthony has many devotees and several Churches have been erected in his honor. Perhaps the most popular one that daily attracts people of every cast, creed or race is the one at Kochchikade, in the heart of the city of Colombo.

One has only to visit this church on any Tuesday of the year, to see the thousands from North, South, East & West who come to pray to St. Anthony, to ask his help for some need, to fulfill promisses made, to thank him for answering their prayers and show their love and respect.

The history of this church at Kochchikade as handed down by tradition and gleaned from the documents preserved in the Archdiocesan Archives in Colombo is as follows;
In the 18th Century, Catholicism was still a proscribed religion in Sri Lanka and priests could not exercise their ministry in public. The Dutch were persecuting the Catholics but who preferred to be degraded, impoverished and ridiculed rather than give up their Faith; Shrines such as Madhu, Talawila and Kochchikade are souvenirs of those dark days of the persecution. (S.G. Per era, S J Historical Sketches page 14) A few Orations from Goa, visited the faithful in Ceylon at the risk at their lives. Fr. Jacome Gonsalves the Superior of Orations who is affectionately remembered in Ceylon as the ‘father of Sinhala Catholic Literature, lamented the fact the Catholics of Colombo had no resident priest. However a zealous priest, Fr. Antonio, disguised as a merchant took up his abode in a house in Maliban Street, Colombo, close to St. Philip Neris Church. (The old Church faced the road) The Dutch discovered his hiding place, but Fr. Antonio, disguised, fled towards Mutwal. He met some fishermen who knew him and his reputation for Sanctity, and volunteered to protect him from the Dutch, provided he obtained from God the favor they wanted, namely the stoppage of Sea erosion. When the pursuers arrived, the fishermen refused to hand over Fr. Antonio until he had granted them the favor they were asking for. Fr. Antonio then returned to his home at Maliban Street, and came to the shoe, clad in his priestly garments and with a large wooden Cross in his hand. Planting the Cross at the spot most threatened by the advancing Sea, he prayed to God to manifest His Glory, by working this miracle. On the third day the waves receded and an extensive sand bank was exposed to the view of all.

The Dutch Government appreciated this favor and offered a reward to the people’s benefactor. The humble priest asked only the permission to live and die near the Cross he had planted. This was granted and the priest built a Chapel with mud in honor of his patron, St. Anthony of Padua. When he died after many years, he was buried there.

The little Chapel which was made of mud was enlarged in 1806. And in 1822 one of the members of the Congregation went to Goa and brought a Statue of St. Anthony and it was solemnly placed on the altar of the small Church. This is the very image that is to day held great veneration at St. Anthony’s Church, Kochchikade,and the side altar on which it rests, is the altar of the ancient Church and stands on the very spot Sanctified by miraculous event to which the origin of the same Sanctuary is due.

Rev. Canon Ivan & Ouida Corea of St.Luke's Church Borella

This short film is a tribute to The Reverend Canon Ivan and Ouida Corea of St.Luke's Church, Borella, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They championed the rights of the poor - particularly the Rodiya Community.

Born in Chilaw, Ceylon, he was the son of Dr. James Alfred Ernest Corea and Letitia Grace Alice Seneviratne. His uncles were the famed freedom fighters of Sri Lanka, Charles Edgar Corea and Victor Corea who founded the Chilaw Association and the Ceylon National Congress. Ivan Corea was a direct descendant of King Dominicus Corea, also known as Edirille Rala. He was crowned King of Kotte and Sitawaka by Vimala Dharma Suriya, King of Kandy, in 1596. The great Mahatma Gandhi met Ivan Corea's father when he was hosted by the Corea Family in Chilaw, on his first and only visit to Ceylon in 1927.

The young Corea was educated at Royal College Colombo. He joined the clergy of the Anglican Church of Ceylon in 1926, an early posting was at St.Phillip's Church in Kurana, Katunayake. Having spent several years in the priesthood, Reverend Corea was appointed Chaplain to the Bishop of Colombo. He was also made a Canon of the Cathedral Church of Christ in his sacerdotal silver jubilee. In the 1960s Canon Corea was appointed Rural Dean of Colombo, of the Church of Ceylon.

He was Vicar of St. Luke's Church Borella for over 25 years.(1929--1954) Canon Ivan Corea and his wife Ouida Corea, played a key role in re-building St. Luke's Church - the edifice was designed by Canon Corea including the designs on each pillar,the octagonal tower of the Sanctuary,the doors and windows including all decorative motifs within the Church in Borella.The tablet for the extension was laid on October 17, 1938 by the Commisary of the Bishop of Colombo, Ven. F.L.Beven.

Archdeacon Beven wrote about the architecture of St. Luke's Church, Borella: 'It is an example how an unattractive old Church, which needs re-building, can be re-built in stages, with functional structure for all liturgical needs, in Sinhalese style, and provide attractive exterior and interior in a Church.'

The Church celebrated its Diamond Jubilee during the time of Reverend Ivan Corea.[5] The Bishop of Colombo, Bishop Horsley, consecrated the Church on the day of its diamond jubilee on June 30, 1941.

This was a time of great revival and several missionary activities took place at St. Luke's Church, Borella. The church attracted a huge congregation, one of the largest in Colombo, hence the need for the extension.Sri Lankan Church historian, Kumudu Amarasingham, writing in Lanka Library notes:The church launched several missionary activities and social service projects in the Wanathamulla area and with the Rodiya community in Narahenpita. Women and girls were taught needlework at the sewing classes. There was a night school at which the boys were taught English.A few years later girls were given nursing classes by the St. John's Ambulance Brigade which helped them to find employment as nurses and aides in the hospitals. The Bible teachers were very active and Dr. Abraham Perera and his wife built a residence for them. There were Missions of Revival and Healing.The Healing Mission of Bishop Dr. Pakenam Walsh made headline news in September 1942. There was an annual week of witness prior to St. Luke's Festival on October 18. A special service for those in the medical profession was held at St. Luke's which was very well attended by those in the healthcare service. There was also a daily morning service at 5.30 a.m. which was attended by medical personnel before reporting for duty. While at St. Luke's Church, Canon Corea and his wife ministered to the poorest of the poor, the Rodiya Community, over a period of 18 years. He even housed members of the Rodi Community on Church property in Castle Street, Colombo.

Reverend Corea was immortalised in a song in the 1970s when the Sri Lankan superstar Clarence Wijewardena composed 'Piyaneni' (Father) in memory of this much loved priest, who worked tirelessly for the poor.He was the father of Vernon Corea, one of Sri Lanka's great broadcasters, a pioneer with Radio Ceylon/SLBC and Ethnic Minoities Adviser to the BBC. His younger son was Ernest Corea, who was Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the United States, Cuba and Mexico. Ernest Corea was a highly influential editor of the Ceylon Daily News and the Ceylon Observer in Colombo.

如果要說我最懷念斯里蘭卡的什麼地方，我想我會毫不猶豫的說Galle加 ... 我很喜歡這裡的另一個原因，雖然Galle在斯里蘭卡也是一處有名的景點
Galle is a city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It’s known for Galle Fort, the fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. Galle Lighthouse stands on the fort’s southeast tip.
到訪斯里蘭卡加勒（Galle）的遊客大都選擇住進四百多年前由荷蘭人著手興建的加勒城堡（Galle Fort）內。加勒城堡位於一個面積約 52 公頃的半島之上，它是一個融合了歐洲和南亞傳統建築風格的堡壘。由於當局近年致力保育，加勒城堡及城堡內的殖民地建築保存完好。

圍繞著城堡的是一道完整的城牆（Fort Walls），主要由荷蘭人於 1663 年所建。雖然加勒城堡不能保護荷蘭人於 1796 年把控制權拱手讓給英國人，但加勒城堡卻成功於 2004 年保護城堡內的居民和遊客免受城牆外因南亞海嘯驟然湧至的波濤淹沒，受災程度遠低於城牆外的加勒市。

遊客的指定項目是走上城牆看看城牆內外的光景，我甫安頓好亦立即沿著城牆跑了大半圈。城牆外是一望無際的印度洋，可惜是當天天氣多雲，看不到印度洋的水平線日落。翌日醒來藍天一片，我禁不住藍天的誘惑又跑了城牆一圈。

城牆東南角的加勒燈塔（Galle Lighthouse）建於 1939 年，連同位於北面城牆建於 1882 年的鐘樓（Clock Tower），是加勒城堡其中兩座地標歷史建築。城牆內亦遺有多座歷史建築物，較有代表性的包括建於 1755 年的荷蘭歸正教堂（Dutch Reformed Church / Groote Kerk）、1871 年的諸聖聖公會教堂（All Saints Anglican Church）和 1904 年的米拉清真寺（Meera Mosque）等。城牆內許多旅館、遊客商店和餐廳等都是顏色鮮艷的古老民房，雖然免不了受到商業化的影響，卻仍為加勒城堡增添幾分小鎮風情。

Pope canonises Sri Lanka's first saint

Hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans have crowded the Colombo seafront as Pope Francis canonised the island's first saint in one of the biggest public gatherings the city has ever witnessed. Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez reports from Colombo.
