RUSSIA: FAMILIES OF KURSK CREW CONTINUE TO ARRIVE 2
Russian/Nat
The families of the Kursk crewmen continue to arrive in Murmansk, driven by a desperate desire to be close to their loved ones who, they hope, just may still be alive inside the trapped submarine.
A whole carriage load of crewmen's relatives arrived in Murmansk on Saturday from the city of Kursk, after which the submarine is named.
At least seven out of the 118 men on board the Kursk come from the city which has close ties to the stricken underwater craft.
One week after the Kursk submarine sank abruptly in the Barents Sea with 118 crew members on board, a top Russian admiral appeared on all Russian television channels to tell his countrymen that they should abandon their hopes of seeing the Kursk men alive.
In the city of Murmansk, near the Kursk home base, the Balashov family watched the television screen, a mix of despair and anger reflecting on their faces.
Like all Russians across the country today, they have two questions for the authorities; why the full extent of the tragedy was kept under wraps for so long, and why the appeal for foreign help was made so late.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
For six days they weren't telling us a lot - and nothing, nothing concrete - what happened, how did it happen and, most importantly, what's fate of the crewmen. I think they did not care for saving those sailors onboard. They just wanted to hide true picture of the events from people.

SOUNDBITE:(Russian)
The authorities must pay attention to society's needs and be open with society. We all felt during these days that the authorities have got lost and did not know what to do.

The Governor of the Murmansk region Alexei Yevgokimov confirmed that the reason for the submarine's destruction was established beyond doubt - a huge explosion from inside the hull at the bow section of the vessel.
He said that it was likely that the explosion had been caused by a collision with an unidentified object.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We can conclude that there was a significant explosion - a whole part of the submarine has been destroyed. The consensus is that there was a collisions with an, as yet, unidentified object, which must have been underwater, because the Russian submarine didn't touch the surface.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexei Yevgokimov, Governor of Murmansk Region
Meanwhile financial resources, he said, are being stretched to the limit.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Our concern now is on material help. We made calculations, and we've already received 500 thousand roubles from the Russian Government.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexei Yevgokimov, Governor of Murmansk Region
The Governor went on to allay fears about radiation leaks from the vessel, saying that levels were being monitored constantly, that everything was normal, and they expected the same readings from the Norwegian specialists when they arrive.

Korennaya,Svoboda, Kursk Oblast
This ancient Holy Spring was started when a hunter in 1295 from the Rylsk area found the icon laying face down and as he lifted the icon up the spring water came flowing from the roots of the tree. That is how the Kursk Root Icon and the Monastery received their name. They both also called Korennaya (Koren' means Root in Russian). The Kursk Root Icon History is very long and having many miracles of helping people with illnesses even to the present day. Many people visit the monastery every day just to receive some of the Holy Kursk Root Water and bring it home for use on another day.
