Wilmorton
This small suburb of Derby got its name from the former owners of the land the Wilmot Hortons.
It was the postal authorities that suggested this name as originally this area was called Osmaston-by-Derby which was
very confusing for people.
A well known street in Wilmorton is Deadmans Lane, The area at the end of this lane is assumed to have been used as a mass burial ground for victims of the Black Death! A nearby
field was known as blood Sprinkle Field.
Wilmorton has two public houses, both on London Road one at each end of the suburb.
The Navigation is located at 805 London Road, This pub was built shortly after the Derby Canal opened up in 1796
The Derby canal used to flow around the back of this pub, today the former canal route is a cycle path.
In 1895 the original pub building was sold on and reused for another purpose, a new pub was built further down London Road.
This pub used to have a Bowling Green but today this is a car park for the pub.
The Portland Hotel is located at 603 London Road, the current pub of 1936 replaced the original 1884 three-storey building.
The Litchurch Gas Works
All that remains of this massive site are the two gasometers which are a nice feature of Pride Park, you can't miss them
as they are rather large and near Pride Park Stadium.
Schoolhouse Business Centre
This is located in the former Wilmorton Primary School
This building was built in 1892 and has been used as a school up until 2007 when it was revamped.
Osmaston Wesleyan Chapel
This building is located right next to the Schoolhouse Business Centre and the foundation stone was laid on April 8th 1901, By the 1960s the congretion has dwindled and it closed, this was bought in 1967 by the school next door as an extension to their building.
Parish Church of Saint Osmund
YMCA located at 770 London Road
This building was built in 1966 and was demolished in mid November 2008, a brand new building will be built which will be operational in September 2009.
The Derby Conference Centre (former railway training college aka Catalis).
This nice looking Art Deco period building officially opened on Friday 22nd July 1938 by Mr Leslie Burgin, the Minister of Transport. It has been used for many things over the years but in 2007 it re-opened as The Derby Conference Centre which offers Bed and Breakfast, Conferencing, A Wedding venue etc.
In 1983 Clumber Terrace and some houses in Beverly Street and Taylor Street were demolished as part of Derby city Councils plan to improve the area.
In 1993 The development of Pride Park got underway and this led to some big changes for Wilmorton, namely a new major road
connecting the Ascot Drive/London Road roundabout to Pride Park.
Up until Feb 2008 there was a B & Q Diy Supercentre at the end of Ascot Drive but this closed when they opened a new large one on Osmaston Park Road.
Perhaps Wilmorton is best remembered for Wilmorton College (Derby Tertiary College) which was built in the 1960s on the old Borough tip. The first phase of the college opened in 1968, I attended this college for 3 years back in 85, 86 and then in 2000.
Unfortunatly the entire college was demoilished about 2005, today this has a large housing estate on it called City Point

STORYLINE:
Members of the British royal family bid a final farewell to Princess Margaret at Windsor Castle on Friday, 50 years after her father, King George VI, was buried nearby.
The service at Saint George's Chapel was private, though a subdued crowd of nearly three thousand wellwishers had gathered outside the gates.
The principal mourners were Margaret's children, Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto, along with the queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Margaret's former husband, the Earl of Snowdon.
The 101-year-old Queen Mother arrived in a people carrier and entered the building through a different entrance to the rest of her family.
Some 450 people, including more than 30 royals, attended the funeral service for the 71-year-old younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II.
The princess's rose-covered coffin was shrouded in her red, blue and gold-coloured personal standard during the funeral service.
Following cremation at nearby Slough Crematorium, Margaret's ashes were to be placed in the Royal Vault at Saint George's Chapel.

Compton theatre organ at the Plaza cinema Stockport.
The wonderful Compton theatre organ being played by organist Paul Greenwood at the amazingly restored Art Deco Plaza Cinema in Stockport, England. The cinema was originally opened in October 1932, and has since been extensively restored by The Stockport Plaza Trust over the years since they took ownership in 2000. The Plaza cinema has been restored to the exact same condition as the day it opened in 1932, with great attention to detail!
