Riga (Latvia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Riga in Latvia.
Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is located in the centre of the city and has a long and varied history. It features inner cross vaults modelled on those of the dome of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck’s cathedral, plus a circular arch and sturdy, red brick walls. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Mentzendorff House was a manorial property which German merchants had built at the end of the seventeenth century. Carefully renovated, its original splendour has been fully restored. The middle class buildings of Elisabeth and Albert Street indicate the prosperity of its past occupants. Like almost nowhere else, art nouveau has been preserved incredibly well with lavish embellishments and numerous motifs. Marien Cathedral is situated in the centre of the city and is the most important religious building in the Baltic States. Its age, dimensions and contrasting architectural styles bear witness to a long history and its famous organ, built in 1883, contains a hundred and twenty four registers and almost seven thousand wooden and metal pipes. In keeping with the age-old traditions of the Hanseatic League, the very heart of the Baltic beats within Latvia's metropolis and, with an elegant lust for life, Riga is an extraordinary treasure!

Saint Peter's Church, Riga
Pēterbaznīcas iela (Peter's church street) runs alongside the church from Skārņu iela to Kungu iela
Saint Peter's church, which is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the Baltic States, was first mentioned in 1209. By the 15th century, the church had been totally reconstructed and had acquired the shape we see today.
The three master builders of Saint Peter's in the early fifteenth century were Hinrik Hauerbeke and the father and son Johannes and Kersten Rumeschottel from Rostock who built the church after the design of Saint Marienkirche in their hometown.
Throughout its eight centuries of history, the church has suffered from both fires and war. During World War II, on 29 June 1941, the cathedral was the focus of a severe air bombardment, which caused the tower to collapse. During the 1970s much work was done on the building, which finally reopened in 1984.
The church was given its first tower, made of wood, in 1491. In 1666 it collapsed and was rebuilt only to be destroyed by fire the following year. In 1690, Rupert Bindenschuh rebuilt the tower to the height of 64.5 meters, which made it the highest wooden structure in Europe.
In 1721, for the sixth time in its history, lightning hit the tower and, if we are to believe the story, Tsar Peter I, who at that time was staying in Riga, helped to extinguish the fire. In 1746 the tower was again rebuilt this time by Johann Wilbern. Destroyed in Word War II, the 123 meter-high tower was rebuilt in 1973.
The three doors of the high western façade of Saint Peter's Church are decorated with sculptural monuments representing the church patrons and allegorical representations of Christian morality. They were carved in granite by Johan Daniel Schau in the years 1693 and 1694.

St Peters Church - Riga Rooster - Riga Latvia
The Riga Rooster sits high above the rooftops of Riga Latvia and he ... Sees all, Knows everything, Tells little; but shares what's important.
Legend tells that the Riga Rooster which adorns the top of the oldest church spires in the city serves as a wind indicator and to guide visitors into the city. According to Christian tradition, the rooster is also a vigilant defender against evil, and with his morning song he can drive away all bad things.

Riga is a small city with many beautiful things. On the narrow and cozy alleyway, the small houses have a shoulder to shoulder, and the steeple of the church has a small weather vane. The small weather vanes that Lee added to the sky are traces of the Middle Ages that flourished with maritime trade. This red building, filled with one side of the City Hall Square, was a social gathering place for wealthy unmarried merchants and captains, standing in front of Roland, a symbol of medieval trading and freedom. However, keeping this building is also the name of the black-faced man, a black-faced man who does not resemble Roland's. Those who store wine and honey here, sometimes meetings and occasional parties, trade through the oceans and have to protect themselves from the threats of pirates, and have themselves become merchants and knights. So they called themselves black-haired guilds, using the Egyptian-born soldier of St. Morris as their patron saint, and under his guard, Riga flourished. At that time, Riga had his own laws. During the Hanseatic Alliance, having authority to do measurements has important implications. Through it, Riga was able to build wealth. All the merchants who came into the port of Riga had to reload the merchandise in accordance with Riga's laws and pay for it accordingly. When measuring, the merchant lost his arm if he made a mistake as much as half a finger. If you make a mistake as a finger, you will be put to death. But you have to be as careful as the medieval surveys, it is the summer weather in Riga where you can not see beyond that side of the square.

Ar to Rīgai bija iespēja veidot bagātību.

Latvia Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Latvia.
Latvia is a small Baltic republic, a country with a strong national identity, situated within the centre of the Baltic States. Throughout the course of history its desire for freedom has always taken it forward. Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is one of the oldest in the centre of the city and, at the same time, a main landmark. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Close to Riga is Jurmala, today a popular health resort on the Latvian Riviera, with splendid bay-windowed villas, battlements and towers, formerly Baroque and later with a nod at Gothic. Thirty kilometres of beaches with bright erinaceous quartz and a mild climate created a holiday paradise in the nineteenth century. Amid the fertile Zemgale Plain is the magnificent, huge Baroque Jelgava Castle, the largest in Latvia. In 1737 the residence of the then secular ruler of the Duchy Of Kurland was built on the ramparts of an ancient castle of the Livonian Order. Beneath the southeast corner of the castle is the Crypt Of The Dukes, a tomb vault with thirty superbly decorated sarcophagi of tin and wood. The picturesque primordial river valley of Gauja has for centuries attracted travellers from each corner of the world. This Livonian Switzerland not only has the charm of primary nature, but also all the ambience of the Middle Ages. Today’s Latvia is now striking a healthy balance between a market economy, ancient traditions and the burdensome legacy of a turbulent past. Its journey into the European Union has been a success, thanks to courage, strength and faith!

Gaujas (Latvia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Guajas in Latvia.
The picturesque and primordial river valley of Gauja lies within the heart of Latvia and has for centuries attracted travellers from each corner of the world. This ‘Livonian Switzerland’ not only possesses the charm of primary nature but also all of the ambience of a mysterious past. From 1878 the new Sigulda Castle was built for Russian prince, Cropotkin, on the site of the outer bailey of an Order castle. Sigulda Castle was built by the Order Of The Brothers Of The Sword but, following union with the Teutonic Order, passed over to the Livonians. Cesis is located in the middle of the Highlands and is one of the oldest and most splendid towns in the country. Saint John‘s Church is also the country’s oldest basilica. It is the largest Gothic church outside Riga and was founded in 1282 as the main church of the Brothers Of The Sword. From 1778 the ‘New Castle’ was inhabited by the noble Von Silvers Family and today the Museum Of History And Art is housed there. Since the thirteenth century, the mediaeval castle has shared its fate together with the city in fighting against Russian, Polish and Swedish armies. Despite much damage, today the ruins are still impressive and is where unique nature combines with atmospheric historic buildings.

Museum of Foreign Art Riga Stock Exchange
The Riga Stock Exchange building was built in 1852 after a design by the notable Saint Petersburg architect and academic Harald Julius van Bosse. In its time, the building, decorated with allegorical sculptures, was Riga's most ornate. Now, after the RE&RE restorers have finished their work, it can be seen in all its original glory. Authors: Janis Senbergs and Kristaps Petersons (Oobelisk, 2011).

St Saviour Anglican Church choir in Riga, Latvia
Today 13th March at the Church of Saint Saviour in Riga, Latvia the choir sang. It sings beautifully and it is a joy to listen to on the second Sunday of every month.
Saint Saviour's Church
British traders first established an Anglican church in Riga in 1822, holding their services in the Refomātu baznīca on Mārstaļu iela. The present church, which was designed by Johann Daniel Felsko and opened in 1859, is built of English red bricks on a 30 cm layer of English soil that had been specially imported from the United Kingdom. It is on the site of the former Paul's bastion, which was removed in the 1850s.
During Soviet rule, the church was desecrated and transformed into a students' club, cultural centre and recording studio. After renewed Latvian independence in 1991 the church was re-consecrated and now serves Riga's English-speaking ex-pat population, not only as a place of worship, but also as a day centre for the elderly and a soup kitchen.
