The Cathedral of the Marsh
Here I take a look around All Saints' Church Lydd.
Lydd lies in the middle of Romney Marsh between Dungeness and Appledore .
Originally on the coast it was a famous port and fishing town lying on an island on the opposite side of the estuary of the river Rother to New Romney . Lydd was founded on an island in the marshes by the Saxons and was known as Hylda .
Edward I in the Cinque Ports charter gave the rights to Lydd so that it shared taxes with New Romney on the catches of fish landed in the area.
The stonework of All Saints church was started by the Saxons, and some of this original stonework is still visible by the font. The wealth of Lydd enabled the church to be enlarged until it is now the largest of the churches on the Romney Marsh and is known as the Cathedral of the Marshes . The church tower was raised to 132ft high by Cardinal Wolsey in the 15th century.
In 1287 the Great Storm hit the channel and blocked the mouth of the Rother, changing its course to run south from Appledore to Rye . This change turned the harbour at Lydd into farmland and marsh, and destroyed its main claim to fame.
As the land grew around the island so the fishermen moved with it to the sea, today at Lydd on Sea about 3 miles south.
Accompanying music: Prelude No.13 in F Sharp Minor by Frederic Chopin.

Historic All Saints Church at Shirburn Castle
This Church is closed (redundant) and may only be visited Monday-Friday by prior appointment. contact Beechwood estate Office,
THE ESTATE OFFICE, SHIRBURN CASTLE OX49 5DL WATLINGTON.
The Church contains the family mausoleum of the Parker family (Earls of Macclesfield) and that of Thomas Phelps astronomer. An early transit of Venus was viwed from the castle observatory.
The inside of the church is in a good state but a bit frozen in time being unused since 1995 with no electricity. Shirburn is a small village with no pub or shop and few houses where I would guess everyone would have been employed by the Castle estate. The 9th Earl of Macclesfield, was evicted from the family seat at the end of 2004 by his own family because the estate and castle were falling to pieces. From what you can view of the out-buildings (the castle is firmly inaccessible) the estate must have been at one time a immaculate.

[edit]History
The church was built in 1863 for the industrialist Edward Akroyd, and designed by W. H. Crossland.[1] It stands on a wooded hillside in the Calder Valley opposite a model village built by Akroyd for his employees.[2]
[edit]Architecture
[edit]Exterior
St Stephen's is constructed in stone and has a slate roof. Its plan consists of a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel with a five-sided apse, a south porch, and a north chapel acting as a transept. In the clerestory are two lancet windows in each bay, and at the west end is a four-light window over which is a round window. Along the aisle walls are three cinquefoil wondows in each bay; the bays are separated by buttresses surmounted by pinnacles. In the transept are two lancet windows, over which is a quatrefoil window. The apse also contains lancets. Above the walls of the aisles are pierced trefoil parapets. Over the join between the nave and the chancel is a double bellcote.[1]
[edit]Interior
Inside the church, the nave has a waggon roof, while the chancel is tunnel vaulted. The arcades are of different design, one is supported by cylindrical piers, the other is on clustered colonnettes. The transept is occupied by the organ. The interior of the church is decorated with wall paintings. These include depictions of saints on the south wall of the chancel, and stencilled designs on the ceilings of the aisles. The pulpit is also highly decorated, with mosaic panels, and there is also mosiac in the reredos. The west window and in the windows of the apse contain stained glass.[1] The glass in the apse was designed by Hardman & Co.[2]
