Loughborough is a town in the Charnwood borough of Leicestershire, England. Loughborough is the seat of Charnwood Borough Council and home to Loughborough University. Loughborough is close to the Nottinghamshire border and is within a short distance of locations such as Nottingham, the East Midlands Airport and Derby.
Loughborough has the world's largest bell foundry — John Taylor Bellfounders, which made the bells for the Carillon war memorial, a landmark within the Queens Park in the town, Great Paul for St Paul's Cathedral, and York Minster. The first mention of Loughborough is in the 1086 Domesday Book. Loughborough's local weekly newspaper is the Loughborough Echo. The town of Loughborough is also served by Leicestershire's daily newspaper, the Leicester Mercury.
Loughborough railway station is the mainline national station serving the town. Network Rail has recently redeveloped the station, increasing the length of platforms and improving access. The local council has made concurrent improvements to the surrounding area. The M1's Junction 23 lies just to the west of Loughborough. The River Soar passes by to the east of the town. Navigation from Loughborough north towards the Trent was achieved in 1778 by the Loughborough Navigation, which terminates at Loughborough Wharf between Derby Road and Bridge Street.

A good variety of layouts and gauges on display, we hope you enjoy.
Nitun – OO Gauge – 1965ish 3rd rail BR(S) ‘Nictun Borrud’ is a layout which was based on the US Army building a branch line during WWII. Had it been rebuilt it would have come from the Meon Valley Line to Southwick House just behind Portsdown Hill, near Portsmouth.
Adlestrop – O Gauge – Set in 1918 toward the end of the First World War. It represents a village in “middle England” during the conflict, served by a branch line station.
Hampton Vale - OO9 Gauge – A rural terminal station, together with local mill and sidings.
Military (Model) Railway Display – A selection of military railway vehicles, along with a collection of tanks and similar equipment.
Holm - OO Gauge – ‘Holm’ was built with the aim of using rolling stock, buildings etc., which were readily available in model shops. The name of Holm comes from two islands, Flat Holm and Steep Holm, which are in the Bristol Channel between Barry and Western-super-Mare.
Children's Corner - OO Gauge – This is designed primarily for use by Children
Broad Pass - Z Gauge It is based on the 469 mile railroad line between Steward and Fairbanks, the one and only main line in the state of Alaska.
City Basin Goods - N Gauge – depicts a gently decaying urban freight yard in the late 1960s/early 1970s on the Western Region of British Rail.

Gas Lane - OO Gauge – A compact gas works setting which portrays goods operation in an industrial setting.
Coleford - OO9 Gauge based on a real railway in the Forest of Dean with History having been changed a little… The railway from Coleford to Monmouth had its origins as a 3’ 6” gauge plateway, the Monmouth Tramway carrying coal, clay and lime to the river Wye at Monmouth.

Oakham is the county town of Rutland in the East Midlands of England, 25 miles east of Leicester, 28 miles south-east of Nottingham and 23 miles west of Peterborough. Oakham lies to the west of Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. It is in the Vale of Catmose and is built on an incline, varying from 325 ft (99 m) to 400 ft (120 m) above sea level.
Local governance for Oakham is provided for by the single-tier unitary Rutland County Council, of which Oakham is the headquarters. Tourist attractions in Oakham include All Saints' Church and Oakham Castle. Another popular and historic feature is the open-air market held in the town's market square every Wednesday and Saturday (near the ancient octagonal Buttercross with its pyramidal roof and wooden stocks, a Grade I listed building).
The impressive spire of Oakham parish church, built during the 14th century, dominates distant views of the town for several miles in all directions. Restored in 1857–58 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the church is a Grade I listed building. Oakham Castle, in Oakham, Rutland, was constructed between 1180 and 1190 for Walchelin de Ferriers, Lord of the Manor of Oakham. The Castle is known for its collection of massive horseshoes and is also recognised as one of the best examples of domestic Norman architecture in England.
Rutland County Museum is located in Oakham, Rutland, in the old Riding School of the Rutland Fencible Cavalry which was built in 1794-95. The Birmingham to Stansted Airport railway line runs through the town, providing links to Birmingham, Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport. Oakham railway station is positioned approximately halfway between Peterborough railway station and Leicester railway station
Oakham is on the A606 between Melton Mowbray and Stamford. On 10 January 2007, the A606 bypass opened diverting traffic from the town centre. The Oakham Canal connected the town to the Melton Mowbray Navigation, the River Soar and the national waterways system between 1802 and 1847.

Persian woman appointed as first Bishop of Loughborough
The Revd Canon Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani has been appointed as the first Bishop of Loughborough.
As the first Bishop of Loughborough Guli will take a full role in the work of the Church across Leicester and Leicestershire, but the post will also have a focus on supporting Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) clergy, lay workers and congregations in the county.
For more information, please visit our website here:
“I’m very excited about the potential for this role which draws together several important themes in the current life of the Church,” says Guli. “Whilst being a bishop for the whole diocese, it will be a particular joy and a privilege to learn from and draw out the rich resources of Christians from minority ethnic communities.”
Canon Guli Francis-Dehqani currently leads Curate Training in the Diocese of Peterborough. She is also Adviser for Women’s Ministry for the diocese, a Canon at Peterborough Cathedral, and sits on the Church of England’s governing body, the General Synod.
In the belfry at Southwark Cathedral
As we go the tenor's voice becomes louder and louder until, at last, as we are going to step onto the platform of the bells, we shrink back as from a blow, from the stunning clash of sound with which he greets us. He is a rather alarming object to behold swinging violently to and fro close to us and we decline the invitation to step past him onto the staging beyond for which feat there seems but scant space - Charles Dickens visits a belfry
The Cathedral Church of St Saviour has a heavy ring of 12 bells, which hang in the imposing central tower which stands 163 and a half feet high. The tower was completed in 1528 and has a pair of windows on two tiers on each side.
In 1735 an old ring of eight was recast completely into a heavy ring of twelve by Samuel Knight of Holborn in London, Samuel Knight being a descendent of the Knights who began bellfounding in Reading in the 1500s. The tenor of this ring was 51cwt. Since that date, the 7th and the back three have all had to have been recast at various points.
The frame is the original one built to house Knight's new twelve in 1735. Notice that the end of the tenor pit has been carved to widen it to let the bell pass! It was strengthened when the bells were rehung in 1911 and the tenor recast and all new fittings supplied also at this point. During the war the bells were lowered to the ground for safety.

The Southwark Cathedral Society of Bellringers was formed 100 years ago to (obviously) ring these bells (and are also seen ringing them to Stedman Cinques on the video linked to this one).
If you would like to know more about this fascinating and grand ring of bells, I implore you to read more on this excellent history of the tower to which I am indebted for a lot of the above information.
Also, the bells are needing rehanging work and to raise money for this, the master of the Southwark Cathedral Society has embarked upon a 1,200 mile bike ride to the extremeties of mainland UK, to raise funds for the rehanging of the bells. For more information on this, and to support the effort then visit this site
