Should you go whale watching in Perth?
You are pondering over this giant question – should you go whale watching in Perth? After all, watching this giant gorgeous animal up close is such a cool and YOLO thing to do. But I know your fear. “What if I can’t get to see the whales? What if the yacht stays 2km away from the whale, and all I can catch is just a glimpse of the whale tail? Will I end up wasting my time and money?”
I had the exact same doubts before. In the past, when I went for this kind of animal watching boat tour in other countries like Japan, I was so disappointed as I never got to see the animals from a near distance. That was why I was quite skeptical about catching a good view when my family decided to go for whale watching in Perth. Nevertheless, we went ahead booking our trip with All Sea Charters as it has a lot of good reviews online. Still, I wasn’t convinced.
Whale Watching In Perth – the Candid Experience
We opted for the morning tour which started at 945am. The first 45 minutes was spent traveling out to the deep water and searching for whales. Occasionally, some people spotted sights of dolphins and got everyone excited. You need to be really quick catching the sights of these agile creatures. But the rest of the time, all you could see was just the bright sun and glittering sea.
Just as the search seemed endlessly long, the yacht suddenly came to a halt. Two kids suddenly shouted: “The whales are there!”
The next second, I saw the giant tail flapping the water before creating some big splashes. I then saw two big patches of giant green florescent beneath the sea water. “We got two Humpback whales with us. The green florescent patches are the reflections of their white bellies.”
Wow! I didn’t expect meeting one, but now we got 2 whales swimming and playing around us. How lucky! The amazing part was, they were really close to us, sometimes just within 5 meters away.
Apparently, whale watching is popular south of Perth waters because it is an important rest area for southward migrating humpback whales between September to late November, when they can be seen in the area with great regularity.
Our tour guide Deanna shared with us that the Humpback whales were migrating back to Antarctica. During the migration process, they will not eat anything as they have fed themselves with enough food before the departure. During the journey, they will surface to the water to breath some fresh air because they are mammals after all. But they can hold their breath for 40 minutes under water. How amazing!
If you want to get a clear view of the whales, come to the front of the yacht, where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the gorgeous creatures. Hold on tight when you are in front and enjoy the view!
For the next 30 minutes, I caught the two whales playing with each other numerous times, revealing their gorgeous bodies right in front of my eyes. I also learnt so much from my guide Deanna. She is so passionate about educating the people about these creatures and how we can better protect them.
Whale Watching In Perth – Extra Tips for a Greater Experience
Bring extra layers of clothes
Because we went there during the middle of the winter, the wind became really cold and strong when the yacht started sailing. So do bring extra layer of clothes to keep yourself warm.
Get outside for fresh air if you experience sea sick
Of course, you can choose to keep warm by staying inside the yacht cabin. But if you are not very used to the sea, you can get motion sickness very easily. That’s why I suggest you to stay outside for some fresh air and wear extra layers to keep warm.
All in all, I had such a wonderful time during the tour. I didn’t have a high expectation at first, but the whole experience totally surpassed my expectation. So don’t need to hesitate about whether you should go whale watching in Perth. Go for it and you will love it!
Legend Charters Whale Watching Margaret River Region
A showcase of our favourite shots from the last couple of years whale watching in Busselton and Augusta in the Margaret River Region
Best Whale Watching in Western Australia
The best whale watching in Western Australia was in perfect demonstration today as Flinders Bay and her visiting Humpbacks showed us the sensational Language of the Whales™! The morning was busy as we began our first interaction within moments of departing the Augusta Boat Harbour with a very relaxed juvenile. Leaving him to continue his Sunday morning sleep in we approached a pod of three young adults who were being rather proactive in their chasing across the bay. A young male had approached the two and it didn't appear that they really wanted his company so tried to allow for some speed to make their new tail disappear. Approaching the abalone farm it seemed to work as a good distraction and it wasn't long before three became two once again and they all settled back into the migration movement. Large adults surged past and we smiled to see the alliance pod of male Bottlenose Dolphins back in the bay again and causing havoc with the Humpbacks.
Racing around them at full speed the six or so Humpbacks seemed slightly confused as to which way was best to go, should they follow the other Humpbacks or hang out with the dolphins? Some went left and a few went right as the Bottlenose Dolphins spent a bit of time with us zooming around the bow and stern. Some of the best whale watching in Western Australia can be found in Augusta during this time of year as the enormous male Humpbacks display in incredible fashion their strength and today we witnessed the perfect example. Two mature males launched into a full surface active display of breaching, head lunging and unified pec slapping with perfect timing. Continuing to breach towards our vessel we could sight a very unique marking on the pectoral fin of one individual that looked exactly like a lighting strike. Very cool indeed and it wasn't long before they had attracted the attention of another large individual and began to socialise together. Forming a bachelor pod they were now ready to find a lovely lady to impress.

How To Catch Jumbo Crayfish Perth WA Western Rock Lobster
How to catch Jumbo Crayfish Perth WA Western Rock Lobster.
Fishing for Jumbo Crayfish between Hillarys Boat Harbour and Direction Bank off the coast of Perth, Western Australia in 30 meters of water.
We built two Craypots for Leanne one out of Jarrah and one out of Pine. They have steel bottoms and double bait baskets. They were built to the Recreational Fishing for Rock Lobster Guide of Western Australia pot specifications. We use Tuna heads, Mackerel, Bonito, Sanmar and old fish frames for bait.
We seem to get the Jumbo size Crayfish around the 30 meter mark. The biggest Crayfish we ever caught was from the NorthWest of Rottnest Island.

Perth Canyon Blue Whales
Three Blue Whales alongside our vessel had everyone onboard stunned! A mother Blue kept her calf close to our vessel so she could block the approach of a larger Blue from getting too close. Adding to the moment was amazing bubble veils as she tried to hide her calf behind an underwater screen of bubbles and this behaviour has never before been sighted by Whale Watch Western Australia with Pygmy Blue Whales, but many times sighted with our interactions amongst Humpbacks. The intelligence of these magnificent mammals was on show as the female used our vessel to her advantage to block the approach of the much larger individual who was most likely a curious male.
It is well noted that Pygmy Blue Whales rarely lift their flukes when diving and you can imagine why everyone onboard was stunned as the younger individual raised his enormous flukes clear of the water below and gracefully dived! Not only did this happen once but several times which had us all mesmerized and very grateful to have seen such a beautiful moment of a Blue Whales life. The interaction between the three individuals was very interesting to watch as they showed a social pattern of movement and surface time rather than all energy focused on feeding. We also sighted two other individuals close by which had all five Blue Whales sighted on Saturday enjoying perfect conditions in the Perth Canyon.
Bottlenose Dolphins, Australasian Gannets, Wilsons Storm Petrels, Flesh Footed Shearwaters and a beautiful Yellow Nosed Albatross completed an incredible day, but perhaps the most exciting discovery was of the young calf who is just about ready to leave mum and begin his own journey traversing the oceans along our coastline. A new beginning for the little one and a new addition to the Blue Whale population is inspiring to see and we hope that the opportunity arises in the near future to see those beautiful familiar flukes once more????
Margaret River Region Whale Watching
Margaret River Region Whale Watching is fantastic during the months of June to August as we sight the northern migration of our Humpback and Southern Right Whales. Today we began our morning with a large competition pod of six individuals who raced through Flinders Bay at top speeds with the female leading the way. Their fast pace and sleek bodies slipped through the ocean with ease as each male jostled for position and we watched unique behaviours like bull frogging where a male will inflate his throat at the surface to appear bigger towards the larger males. Bubble veils and chin slaps also ensued as the males did their very best to impress the lady and deter each other! Charging towards our vessel they dived under and around as the female used our vessel as a distraction and the clever males took the opportune moment to get closer tot he female as they overtook any male who missed a step.
We were stopped in our tracks by a sleepy surfacing adult Southern Right Whale who was wondering what all the fuss was about. A wonderful surprise to see a lovely adult in the middle of Flinders Bay and one surprise became two as another adult surfaced... and then another! We were laughing as we watched a very good party trick our Southern Right Whales seemed to have mastered as one whale turned into three. Looking carefully we easily recognised all three individuals, they were the same individuals from the courtship pod we had sighted only a few days ago. A wonderful clue of information gathered today as we re-sighted the two males and one female who only a short time ago had been actively mating in the bay. A little further along our morning journey and we sighted the precious result of the courtship pods, 10-11 months later a tiny baby Southern Right Whale will be born and this little fellow was resting peacefully with mum in the shallows. Margaret River whale watching is at its best in Augusta as we sight both species in one wonderful morning!

Urban Fishing in Perth | Fishing WA-2 | Part 3
Discovered an un-found hoard of fish hidden in plain sight at the boat moorings in the Perth Harbor area. I am very disappointed in the charter company that let me down. To make it worse, we had driven all the way from Kalbarri to Perth one day prematurely simply to make the trip, only to get a text with half an hours notice to say it had been canceled. I tried to make the best of a bad situation, so bear with me on this one. Hope you enjoy.

This lovely couple of Humpback Whales just didn't want to leave us - they reminded me of a couple of puppies looking for attention. We eventually snuck away when they backed off for a minute.
