Bolivian Commuters Soar Through The Sky
The world's biggest urban gondola system, known as Mi Teleférico, opened in La Paz, Bolivia, in May 2014. The 6-mile-long system is an engineering feat. It's the highest and longest urban gondola in the world. La Paz is the only city to use such a system as the backbone of its public transportation.

Building a transport system in the mountains of Bolivia was always going to demand superlatives. And so it is with what is the biggest project of its kind in the world.
It will link La Paz the highest capital in the world up there in the thin air of the Andes at 3,640 metres with El Alto.
Work has just begun putting in place the cables of the huge towers for a transport system with the first route due to start running in March. When another two are completed by August 18,000 people an hour will glide between La Paz and El Alto.
Vertigo will hardly be an option.
The view from on high will include the daily scene of the roads where bus journeys of just a few kilometres can take up to an hour and heavy traffic clogs up the narrow and steep streets.
There will be no queues in the sky.
An Austrian company is bringing the transport relief to the commuters of La Paz and El Alto at a cost of 172 million euros.
The three separate lines will stretch across a combined 10.7 kilometre area of the city.

The Bolivian car cable state-owned company “Mi teleferico” inaugurates to the public the Light Blue line that connects the south hillside with the center of La Paz, on July 14, 2018. The Light Blue line is the seventh of the “Mi Teleferico” cable car state-owned company. This line will be able to transport 4000 passengers per hour. Image: Jorge Bernal/AFP “Now I’m going to get to work faster!” exulted a smiling Rosa Lima, 52, one of the first passengers on a new cable car line in La Paz that reaches into the heart of the Bolivian capital. Draped in a bright orange blanket typically worn by indigenous people here, Rosa says she lives in a neighborhood on the southern outskirts of La Paz and that it takes her more than an hour to reach the building where she works as a cleaner in the city center. With the new cable car line, she says, she can be there in half the time. ADVERTISEMENT The opening of the new “Celestial,” or sky-blue line was timed partly as a tribute to the revolution of July 16, 1809 and to the heroes of the struggle against Spanish colonizers. With a route from the city’s south to its administrative heart, site of the main public and private-sector offices— and above the noisy, winding and traffic-clogged streets — the line’s opening was highly anticipated. This is the seventh line in the city’s modern cable car system, inaugurated in 2014 and with 16 kilometers (10 miles) of cable in La Paz and reaching to the mountaintop communities of El Alto, at over 4,000 meters (13,100 feet). It is the most extensive such network anywhere, certified as such by the Guinness World Records site, according to the state-run Mi Teleferico (My Cable Car) company, which manages the system. The new line offers excellent views of the city and of snow-capped Mount Illimani (6,462 meters, or 21,200 feet), while allowing passengers to escape the capital’s steep and crowded streets. In its four years in operation, the system has transported more than . It now averages 159,000 a day. Each line in the system is identified by a color. The first three lines opened were identified as red, yellow and green, in homage to the Bolivian flag. New lines were given the colors of white, blue, sky blue (the Celestial line) and orange, corresponding to the wiphala, the checkered banner of the indigenous people here. ADVERTISEMENT The new line, inaugurated at a festive event featuring music and dance, is 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) long and includes 26 towers, four intermediate stations and 155 cabin cars, while connecting with other lines that lead to El Alto. The new line is expected to be the network’s busiest and will travel 20 percent faster than other lines (86 meters, or 282 feet, per second), with a capacity of 4,000 passengers per hour, said Cesar Dockweiler, Mi Teleferico’s general manager. “The line will primarily benefit public-sector employees, because the main government offices are in the city center,” he said. UP, UP AND AWAY
Rethinking urban transport systems. #storiesfromsouthtyrol
In South Tyrol, cable cars have been built for transporting materials and people for more than 100 years. The world’s first passenger ropeway went into operation in Bolzano in 1908. After the First World War an engineer from Lana named Luis Zuegg perfected ropeway engineering. Leitner Ropeways, based in Vipiteno/Sterzing, is one of the world leaders in ropeway construction.
More and more frequently the Mountain Metro is being used in urban settings. In recent years, cities with huge traffic problems have discovered that South Tyrolean cableways make a good alternative to road and subway construction. Dominic Bosio, the export sales manager at LEITNER Ropeways, remembers when the first request for a urban cable car came, twelve years ago: In the Columbian city of Medellin, traffic planners wanted to run a cable car through the city. “At that time they believed in the project more than we did, says Bosio. Other cities, including Frankfurt, Hong Kong, New York, Rio de Janeiro and Ankara followed suit. Cable cars find space even in crowded cities, are much cheaper than a subway, can be built relatively quickly and are eco-friendly. “We must abandon the notion that cable cars are only for the mountains,” says Giorgio Pilotti, the Italian sales manager for Leitner Ropeways.
South Tyrol has long been a place where people have had to reinvent. This film shows that it pays to think outside of the box. Calling into question that which exists. Sometimes even ourselves.

14. Wide shot protestors marching
STORYLINE:
Bolivia was paralyzed as thousands of taxi and bus drivers turned off their engines and marched in several cities on Tuesday to protest the condition of the country's roads and rising tolls.
One demonstrator died in clashes with police.
Police in El Alto, a city of about 600,000 perched above La Paz, used tear gas against the protesters, shooting off one tear gas canister that allegedly hit and killed one of the drivers.
Elsewhere, the day long protests were largely peaceful, though businesses and schools were forced to close in many cities.
Officials estimated Tuesday's strike would cost Bolivia at least dlrs 8 millions.
In La Paz, the administrative capital, police set up road blocks at major intersections.
The drivers were also protesting growing threats of privatization of toll roads and weigh-in stations for commercial trucks.
As part of its economic recovery program, the government has privatized many state-owned companies, including the national airline and oil
company, which has brought massive layoffs.
The drivers were the latest to voice their discontent in President Hugo Banzer's government, which has been struggling to lift the country's economy.

Linkin Park What I've Done Bolivia - Road of death - Camino a Los Yungas
This is one of the few routes that connects the Yungas region of northern Bolivia to the capital city. Upon leaving La Paz, the road first ascends to around 4,650 metres at La Cumbre Pass, before descending to 1,200 metres at the town of Coroico, transiting quickly from cool Altiplano terrain to rainforest as it winds through very steep hillsides and atop cliffs.
The largely single-lane road has few guard rails and cliffs of up to 600 metres . Most of the road is the width of a single vehicle, about 3.2 metres . During the rainy season from November to March, rain and fog can severely hamper visibility, and water runoff can turn the road into a muddy track, affecting traction. In the summer, rockfalls are common and vehicle dust limits visibility as well.
One of the local road rules specifies that the downhill driver never has the right of way and must move to the outer edge of the road. This forces the faster downhill vehicle to stop so that passing can be negotiated safely. Unlike the rest of Bolivia, vehicles are required to drive on the left side of the road to give the driver a better view of the vehicle's outside wheel and making passing safer.
The danger of the road made it a popular tourist destination starting in the 1990s, drawing some 25,000 thrillseekers. Mountain biking enthusiasts in particular have made it a favourite destination for downhill biking since there is a 64-kilometre stretch of continuous downhill riding with only one short uphill section. There are now many tour operators catering to this activity, providing information, guides, transport and equipment.
Nevertheless, the Yungas Road remains dangerous. At least 18 cyclists have died on the road since 1998.
Bolivia: Riot police upend motorway blockade after demo over layoffs
Riot police and redundant workers from a Bolivian textile company clashed in La Paz on Monday, after riot police forcefully brought down a barricade that the workers had set up between La Paz and El Alto.
Riot police fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters, who blocked the motorway in protest against mass layoffs following the closure of Enatex, the largest state-run textile company in Bolivia.

If you are looking for adventure in South America, we suggest to visit the following:
National Park Sajama
In a corner of the Altiplano, due west of Oruro is the sacred mountain of volcano Sajama, highest peak in Bolivia and long revered by the ancient Uru peoples. A place of great natural beauty, it is a favorite with climbers and people who wish to explore this remote and mystical landscape. and a rainy season in the summer. The rivers in the area belong to the inward flowing high plateau river system dominated by the Sajama. Important volcanic cones, like Mount Sajama and the Payachatas are located in the park, together with several lagoons and high lying Andean marshes, where hardy and silicified grasses and a variety of rosette-shaped plants are to be found.
National park Condoriri
The Condoriri National Park, located on the Royal Mountain Range. displays a great natural potential. Beautifully preserved, it is tucked away in the mountains dotted with crystal clear mountain lakes, a product of the constant thawing of the glaciers. Observe stunning ice stalactites forming their unique shapes down cascading waterfalls.
The Condoriri, condor head in Aymara, is a group of 13 equally attractive peaks, where the Nevado Condoriri is the highest and most imposing mountain in the group. From the arrival in La Paz we can already recognize its summit with its glaciers. To the west we find the Pico Austria (Austria peak), a light ascent allows us a magnificent overview of the Cordillera Real, the high plains of the Altiplano and Lake Titicaca.
This trek ascends completely solitary mountains; the total silence of the mountains is only disturbed when passing llamas break up the ice. From these altitudes you can observe the silvery shimmer of light reflected by the worlds highest navigable lake, while trekking in the company of numerous llamas, the occasional alpaca and many smaller animals such as viscachas, lizards, ibises and gulls.
Condoriri 5.700m / 18.700ft classic route
The Condoriri area is a particularly attractive zone to practice climbing. Although the summits are not as high as other peaks, the variety of different terrains encountered and skills needed makes for a very exciting experience. This itinerary also allows you to enjoy climbing even with less experience and train your self on ice to gradually gain more and more technical knowledge and skills.
Mount Illimani 6.439m / 21.125ft classic route
The Illimani is the highest and southern most peak in the Royal range, Hans Ertel, German natural scientist writing in Mountain World 1953, described Illimani as one of the most beautiful and impressive groups of peaks in South America. The normal route is the easiest route on the mountain and it gets you to its highest point.
Mount Huayna Potosi 6.082m / 19.974ft classic route
Huayna Potosí is the easiest 6000er in the world, but its altitude is a real Challenge, The original name is Caca-Aca given by the native indigenes. There are over seven routes to climb all of them with a different grade difficulty. The first climbers were two Germans in May 1919, Rudolf Dienst and Adolf Schulze.
Illampu 6.342m / 20.807ft classic route
The Illampu is one of the hardest and demanding climbs in the Cordillera Real (Royal Mountain Range), you will find physically and technically challenge to overpass in this adventure. This program should only be attempted by those in very good shape and with experience on ice. Beside all this, it is a spectacular climb and you will enjoy it without any doubt.
Sorata Laguna Glaciar (Glaciar Lagoon)
Sorata, a beautiful village located in a lovely valley (2700 m.a.s.l.) on the foothills of Mount Illampu (6400 m.a.s.l.) it is the highest mountain on the Royal Mountain Range. This village Sorata is well know as one of the most beautiful spots of Bolivia, with its semi tropical climate with temperatures between 14 ° and 24 °C (Celsius degrees). From Sorata we start our trekking to Laguna Glaciar, set in between the 2 mountains of Illampu (6356m) and Ancohuma (6427m), it is a beautiful lagoon that is fed by a massive hanging glaciar an amazing place. Laguna Chilate, is our camp for the trek, is also beautiful and a popular day hike from Sorata. This trek gives you the opportunity to get really close to the mountains and the glaciers.
