Allen Garden Conservatory - Toronto Botanical Garden
Another destination that we visited when we were in Toronto. I visited this place once before with Erica. It's nice to be back to see what they have now and how they changed up the place. If you're a plant addict or not this place is highly recommended. It's just so beautiful!

Allan Gardens Conservatory, Toronto
152 years ago, George William Allan(1822-1901) offered a 5 acre oval-shaped parcel of land to the Toronto Horticultural Society. This generous act of private sector philanthropy was a legacy for the citizens of Toronto. In 1902 a fire destroyed the original 1878 Pavillion. The new Palm House was designed by City Architect, Robert McCallum and constructed in 1910.
The design suggests a move toward Modernism at the end of the Victorian era. The steel structure guaranteed that it would last considerably longer than any of its wooden predecessors. Plants from the original Palm House were transfered into the New Palm House in 1910. It should be noted that the Palm House is perhaps the 7th oldest structure of its kind in North America. Additions to the Palm House were made by the Lord and Burnham Greenhouse Company in 1924 and 1957. In 2004, the header house of the former Univeristy of Toronto Research Greenhouse was relocated to Allan Gardens. This greenhouse has become the focus of the Children's garden programme.

Allan Gardens (founded in 1858) is one of the oldest parks in Toronto, Ontario,Canada. Allan Gardens Conservatory is a major landmark and tourist attraction in downtown Toronto. It's historic, cast-iron and glass domed Palm House was built in 1910 and is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. A botanical gem in the heart of the city, Allan Gardens has a permanent collection of exotic plants and beautiful seasonal flower shows. It is operated by Toronto Parks who also run Centennial Park Conservatory. It has a conservatory (greenhouse), a playground and two fenced off-leash areas for dogs. It is open every day of the year and is free. The Cool House has a waterfall, Kashmirian Cypress, small pond and citrus trees. The southern Tropical House has a waterwheel and tropical plants like orchids and bromeliads. The Cactus House has a wide variety of cactiand succulents. The central Palm House houses tall bananas, bamboo and a huge Screw Pine. Another tropical house has many kinds of hibiscus, datura and a cycad. Rare tropical plants from all over the globe are nurtured inside five greenhouses covering 16,000 square feet. The opening on the first Sunday in December features Christmas carollers, horse and wagon rides, hot apple cider and freshly baked cookies. The show runs until the end of December and the conservatory is opened late on weekends and can be viewed by candlelight.During the Victorian Christmas Show, the conservatory is decorated and filled with thousands of flowering plants and over 40 different varieties of Poinsettias. On the first weekend in November, the Fall Show features over 75 varieties of Chrysanthemums. For Easter, the dome is filled with blue and pink hydrangeas and Easter lilies. In February, the Cool House begins the transition from winter to spring by showcasing a wide array of spring flowering bulbs like hyacinths, crocus and pushkinias and colourful cool crops like cineraria and primula. Steel supports and translucent glazing are used throughout. such as framing and trusses. Two main entrances are situated on the south and the north side of the main façade with alike ornamentation above the entry doors. The building design emphasizes the use of repetition, symmetry and contrast. Symmetry is evident when viewing the building on the ground plane, towards the main entrance of the Palm House. Allan Gardens is located on the south side of Carlton Street between Jarvis and Sherbourne Streets. Limited free parking is available off Horticultural Avenue. It is accessible from the College TTC station by taking the Carlton streetcar East or from the Sherbourne TTC station by taking the Sherbourne bus South.
