Day 3: Allegany State Park New York North Country- Finger Lakes trail #1 (2-20-2017)
This is the 3rd say of my trip to Allegany State Park, New York (2-20-2017) which was supposed to be for cross country skiing. Since there is never any snow in New York anymore (and it certainly snows in Pennsylvania less often), I decided to hike a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail that I may not have hiked before. Dave joined me for a 12 mile morning hike on the central section of the Allegany State Park, NCT- also known as the Finger Lakes Trail and Trail #9. The trail is very well marked for the local ASP trail, the FLT (New York State Trail), and the NCT (National Trail). The hike began with some very interesting hummocky terrain (much like the land over a large are of underground mine subsidence, however this was likely due to the last glacial period. Chunks of glacial ice and permafrost under the soil melted, which caused the soil to subside forming an interesting pattern. There were many green mossy rocks, and then the trail began to look like the part I hiked the previous 2 days. When we arrived at the turn- around point I made a time lapse (10X) and silent of the hike back. After this I hiked in Allegheny National Forest (starting about 8 miles West on the North Country Trail from where this hike began (2 miles from New York, of the Pennsylvania side)- separate previously released video. This video was published on 4-29-2017 and completes the documentaries and short movies related to my 2017 trip to Allegany State Park, and Allegheny National Forest in the winter. If you want to see what snow is like in the area- check out some of my 2013 videos where the snow was about 1-2' deep (typical in the 2015 and before era).

abandoned ghost town (urban exploration): red house, new york
There's not much abandoned buildings here, but this place has a neat story, so i tried to find where the original house might have been.
The story goes that back in the 19th century, loggers would float with their logs from upstate new york down the allegheny river to the mills in pittsburgh, a journey which took three days. The return trip, walking upriver, took three weeks.
At a place where a creek joins the river stood a house which served as a landmark for these travelers, due to its unusual size and deep crimson color. But the family who lived there was said to have been torn apart by the civil war, leaving the home abandoned, and some said haunted.
By 1879 the house was described as long ago having fallen to ruin and vanished, but the creek that joins the river where the house once stood, was still known as red house creek, and when the town was established, it was also named red house.
much of the town of red house was absorbed into the allegany state park in 1921, leaving only a small downtown area and a hamlet called frecks, named after the family that had lived in the original red house.
The interstate that was built thru the area in the 1950's severed the road between the downtown and the hamlet, and the downtown area slowly faded away, leaving the hamlet as the last remaining neighborhood in the town, and also leaving the town as the least populated town in all of New York State.
I am trying to get to the old downtown area, to see what can be seen.
00:20 - this was the road between the downtown and the hamlet. it now ends at the entry ramp of the interstate. i try to get to the town this way but the road is too flooded.
00:56 - now i am trying a different way, after having backtracked to the city of salamanca and found an old frontage road that runs parallel to the interstate. before the interstate was built, this frontage road would have been the main road between red house and salamanca.
01:26 - there were several of these little side roads i was unable to explore due to time and weather
02:05 - the allegheny river
02:44 - this weird intersection is where the old downtown was
05:11 - a wild animal sharpens its claws here
07:31 - the red house creek meets the allegheny river right behind the closest grove of trees you see growing on these islands. the original red house was said to stand at the place where the creek and river meet.
08:21 - from here on is random footage from the hamlet and other random isolated buildings sprinkled around the township

Allegany State Park, New York (2017) Cardboard Sled Races with Banana People
Here are the highlights from this year's Cardboard Sled Race at Allegany State Park, New York. Many people chose to dress up to look like a bunch of bananas this year. One sled was made to fit like a pair of blue jeans. Snow was limited, and sleds moved very slow. People needed some extra pushing to get going. This was on Saturday February 18, 2017. By Monday February 20, 2017 most of the snow on the sled hill was gone.
I leave you with my banana boat. Since winter is not very wintery this year, I hope to be in the yellow kayak soon.

Ki-on-twog-ky by F. Bartoli (Seneca Chief Cornplanter) (408) | New-York Historical Society
This is a portrait of Chief Ki-On-Twog-Ky, a proud leader of the Seneca tribe. Ki-On-Twog-Ky means Cornplanter. He was born in western New York State, the son of a Seneca mother and a European fur trader. In 1796 a European artist named Bartoli painted this portrait. The chief is showing off what hes wearing, and there's a story behind why. Ki-On-Twog-Ky was a mighty warrior. In the 1750s he led his tribe into battle against the French. Then during the American Revolution he fought with the British against the colonists. After the Revolution Ki-On-Twog-Ky wanted to live in peace. But he worried about the safety of his villages. Even after the Revolution, British settlers were still living just north of his lands. He knew that if the British and Americans started fighting again, his people could be drawn into war. So in 1786 he came to New York City, at that time the nations capital. He asked Congress two questions: did Americans want to live in peace with the Senecas? And would the United States respect the boundaries of the land his people lived on, land assigned to them by treaty. Congress assured the chief that he had nothing to worry about. And that's where the portrait comes in.
The New-York Historical Society is able to produce illuminating exhibitions, public programs, and make a priceless collection accessible to the public through the generosity of donations and membership. Help us make history matter by joining today.

Kinzua Dam
The Kinzua Dam, on the Allegheny River in Warren County, Pennsylvania, is one of the largest dams in the United States east of the Mississippi River. It is located within the Allegheny National Forest.
The dam is located 6 miles (10 km) east of Warren, Pennsylvania, along Route 59, within the 500,000-acre (200,000 ha) Allegheny National Forest. A boat marina and beach are located within the dam boundaries. In addition to providing flood control and power generation, the dam created Pennsylvania's deepest lake, the Allegheny Reservoir, also known as Kinzua Lake. The lake extends 25 miles to the north, nearly to Salamanca, New York, which is within the Allegany Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York.

The lake extends 25 miles to the north, nearly to Salamanca, New York, which is within the Allegany Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York. Federal condemnation of tribal lands to be flooded for the project displaced more than 600 Seneca members and cost the reservation 10,000 acres (4,000 ha), nearly one-third of its territory and much of its fertile farmland.
The Allegheny Front (2016)
Approaching the Allegheny Front on US 48, Corridor H highway, between Moorefield and Davis in WV. The Allegheny Front is a dramatic escarpment which separates the Ridge and Valley region from the Allegheny Plateau. There is a dramatic change in elevation and weather as you cross the escarpment. The elevation in Moorefield is 800ft, whereas in Davis, it is 3100ft. It is supposedly the one of the windiest places east of the Mississippi.

BPRR 3064 at Kinzua Bridge (24JUL2014)
Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad 3064, BPRR 3330, Gec Alsthom GCFX 6072 operated by Genesee & Wyoming Inc southbound at mile 143 of the B&P Mainline Subdivision on the modern bypass of the Kinzua Viaduct. We stopped at the crossing and it was easy to see by the film of rust that no train had passed by since the last rainfall. Determined to get a train, we settled into our lawn chairs for the extended wait. However, almost immediately we heard the rumble in the distance and about ten minutes later this B&P train came round the bend. Train caught, we headed to see the bridge.
The Kinzua Viaduct at Kinzua Bridge State Park was once the world’s highest and longest rail viaduct and prior to its collapse in 2003 due to a tornado, the bridge was 301 feet tall and 2,052 feet long. The July 21, 2003, a tornado struck the Kinzua Bridge and due to the badly rusted base bolts holding the towers to concrete anchor blocks, 11 of the 20 bridge towers collapsed.
Later we caught at B&P train with BPRR 2000 doing some yard work near Bradford, PA.
