Landmark Gravestones of Western Pennsylvania
Amidst the angst and tumult of the living, there is solace walking among the dead. The landmark cemeteries of Western Pennsylvania—Allegheny Cemetery, Jefferson Memorial Park, Cavalry Cemetery and many others—are not just places of serenity and repose, they are among the most astonishingly beautiful sites in our region.
In these sanctuaries of quiet majesty, the dead speak to us. They tell us of times long passed, of loved ones long gone--and they remind us of the fragility of the human condition. The gravestones of the great, the infamous, and the ordinary mark the history of our region and command the reverence of all who encounter them.

The Secrets & Stories of Pittsburgh's Allegheny Cemetery with Ryan O'Shea
Cal Rodgers was an early aviation pioneer and in 1911 became the first person to complete a transcontiental flight across the United States. In addition to being the first mayor of Pittsburgh, Ebenezer Denny was the Revolutionary War soldier that documented Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown. Stephen Foster is known as the father of American music, and his songs are still popular more than 150 years after his death. What do all of these people have in common? Their stories, along with those of over 133,000 others, rest in the Allegheny Cemetery. This hidden gem of history and nature lies right in the heart of some of Pittsburgh's busiest neighborhoods, but it's fascinating tales often go overlooked. Ryan O'Shea wanted to change that, but this video only scratches the surface. You'll have to take a stroll through this beautiful historic cemetery and check out the Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association for yourself to learn more!
