GMW - SPECKZ (Keegan Allen) Murder, Toronto, Canada

Keegan Allen, also known as 'Speckz' was murdered on Thanksgiving Monday 2007 in Toronto, ON Canada. This video is a plea for tips from the Canadian television show on Rogers called GTA's MOST WANTED. The following is text from a previously posted video by Toronto Crime Stoppers featuring the lead homicide investigator from Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad, Detective Sergeant Frank Skubic.

On Thanksgiving Day, Monday October 8th 2007,at about 2:20 in the morning, Keegan Allen, affectionately known as SPECKZ was in the audience at the All Ages 2007 Showdown, a dance competition being held at the Hungarian Cultural Centre on St Clair Ave in Toronto.

At that time, and for reasons not yet fully understood a gunman opened fire inside the dance hall. Up to 3 shots were fired. The audience, shocked and horrified, ran to the exits and out onto the street.

More shots were fired outside.

The police were not far away and arrived very quickly. Keegan was found on the floor, unconscious, with a fatal bullet wound to his head. The killer, managed to escape, inconspicuously in the crowd.

This is a tragedy that repeats itself all too often. A callous, bold-blooded, heartless miscreant, with no regard for human life, shoots and kills an innocent person and silences witnesses through fear.

We at the Homicide Squad need your help. We cannot solve this, or any other senseless killing without the help of the community. We need witnesses to come forward with the evidence required to bring these killers to justice.

As I review various internet sites such as Facebook, I feel your pain, sorrow, and outrage over the senseless killing of Keegan.

However, this pales in comparison to the pain and sorrow felt by Keegan's family. The killer has taken away a talented young man, who enjoyed expressing himself through dance, who was a jokester, always with a smile on his face.

I appeal to all those in attendance at Showdown 2007 -- you are all witnesses with a unique perspective of what happened -- My colleagues and I need to hear your story.

I know that many of you were videotaping or taking pictures at this event -- that is evidence and I would like to obtain a copy from you.

As a witness, you yourself become a victim by your silence. You must have the courage to come forward and participate in the justice process -- do it for yourself, for your community, and for Keegan Allen's family. If you have any issues or concerns, let's talk about them. Call me at 416-808-7399.

About Me:

Lillian Allen emerged as a leading influential figure on the Canadian culural landscape. She is an award winning and internationally renowned poet and writer of short stories and Plays.

As one of its lead originator, she has specialized in the writing and performing of dub poetry, a highly politicized form of poetry, which is sometimes set to music. Lillian is also responsible for opening up the form to insist and engrave feminist content and sensibilities.

Her recordings 'Revolutionary Tea Party' and 'Conditions Critical' won Juno awards in 1986 and 1988 respectively. Her works appear independently and in anthologies. She has spent almost four decades writing, publishing, and performing her work in Canada, The US, Europe, and England.

She has also worked in film, both as a featured artist (Revolution from de Beat, 1995; Unnatural Causes, 1989; Rhythm and Hardtimes 1987) and as co-producer and co-director of Blak.. Wi Blakk... (1994), a film on Jamaican dub Poet Mutabaruka.

An inspired strategic thinker, Lillian is a leading expert on cultural diversity and culture in Canada and has been a consultant and advisor to all levels of government, to several institutions, and to community groups. She has initiated and facilitated the establishment of a number of organizations in various culturally diverse communities, and has worked within several established organizations to create access and change.

Her work with youth in the City is legendary. She has initiated, led or invigorated many programs like cultural group at Central Neighbourhood House in the seventies, Black Perspective, as Education Coordinator for Immican Youth group, served on boards such as Aspace, (served as president) played pivotal roles at all levels of government with respect to policies on the arts and culture. In the early nineties as part of the implementation strategy for the Toronto Arts Council Equity plan she initiated designed and nurtured such programs as Fresh Arts, Native Women in the Arts, Black Arts Service Organizations.

She is also the initiator and founder of the DubPoets Collective, Toronto.
Lillian Allen, Professor at the Ontario College of Art and Design University, dub poet extraordinaire, has been a cultural activists on the Toronto scene from the seventies. Her work as a cultural strategist has aided in transforming our cultural and arts landscape in Canada and in Toronto in particular. Best known as a pioneering accomplished international artist and award winner for breaking new ground with her award winning dub poetry.
Featured in the official WHO IS WHO in Canada, Ms. Allen, a cultural strategist, is a past member of the Racial Equity Advisory of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Experts Advisory on the International Cultural Diversity Agenda, past executive member and member of the Sectoral Commission on Culture and Information of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
