Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome on 19th and 20th Aug 2017. This was operational from 1916-19. In 2013 it got a 1.5 million pound lottery grant to do the place up.
Now the 24 listed buildings are gradually being made nice to preserve the history. Next year will be a big year as 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of the RAF.
As you go in a guide will take a group of you around once a 'squadron' of you have formed up (my words, not theirs). You get taken to the memorial which display the names of ten young men who died there. In fact out of 14,000 aircrew deaths 8,000 were due to accidents. They had no parachutes in the early years, plus most accidents happened at low level. Dangerous times.
Then you get to see the buildings, some in better repair than others. When you go inside some dioramas have been made, some representing the Zepplins and their attacks, the whole reason this aerodrome was set up. The airships used to track the rivers, so the airfields were based near to them. The tour takes about 45 mins to an hour.
Plenty more to see and do, and you can even eat in the Aircrew's Mess (so to speak).
Sometimes a plane might even land as it is operational today.
Many of the planes are movie props. Many function. The SE5a is 7/8th scale so a smaller engine can be used.
'Zeppelin Attack' is actually a Gotha Aircraft nose I think.
Music is from Ripper Street TV series.

RAF Waltham (Grimsby) Airfield
On the evening of September 3rd 1943, our uncle - RAFVR Sgt. John William Hayton of 100 squadron took off from Waltham as the rear gunner of Avro Lancaster JA969 on a bombing raid to Berlin. He and his crew were lost without trace, either believed shot down in the sea or exploded over the target - it was only John's third mission.
My father was 13 when he lost his brother, and never really spoke about it. Sadly, he succumbed to short illness aged 81 at the end of 2011. My brother and I thought about how we could commemorate our father, and we thought what better way to scatter some of his ashes at the final earthly link with his lost brother.
We take a poignant look at the remainder of the airfield and it's surviving buildings, as well as old taxy ways and runways. We thank Gavin Marshall, a retired fighter-jet engineer with the Red Arrows for his assistance and reading of the eulogy - the day would have had less meaning without Gavin, and we are always in his debt.

Currently being refurbished at Valero, it will be a poignant memorial to the Polish crew of Wellington HX384 who were killed on 11th August 1942 when the aircraft crashed into the sea on take-off from Dale Airfield. Two propellers were recovered by Llantrisant Diving Club in 1991. One was later transported to Poland and is prominently displayed at the War Museum in Warsaw. The other was for several years part of a small museum at Abergavenny.
“It belonged to No 304 Squadron, a Polish-manned unit in the Royal Air Force’s Coastal Command, and was the first of several aircraft tasked with a night operation,” said Malcolm. “The aircraft plunged into the sea and all six crew lost their lives. They are buried at Newark, Nottinghamshire.Crashed after takeoff into the sea. The crew of six Polish nationals perished in the crash. Dominion of Ceylon
Ceylon was a Dominion in the Commonwealth of Nations between 1948 and 1972. In 1948, British Ceylon was granted independence as Ceylon. In 1972, Ceylon became a republic within the Commonwealth, and its name was changed to Sri Lanka. It is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres off the southern coast of India.
The country has also been a centre of the Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times as well as having a strong Hindu presence. The Sinhalese community formed the majority of the population; Sri Lankan Tamils, who were concentrated in the north and east of the island, formed the largest ethnic minority. Other communities included Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the indigenous Vedda people.

Lockheed C-130 Hercules
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built originally by Lockheed, now Lockheed Martin. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. Over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 60 nations.
The C-130 entered service with U.S. in the 1950s, followed by Australia and others. During its years of service, the Hercules family has participated in numerous military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations. The family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. In 2007, the C-130 became the fifth aircraft—after the English Electric Canberra, Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, Tupolev Tu-95, and Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, all designs with various forms of aviation gas turbine powerplants—to mark 50 years of continuous use with its original primary customer, in this case, the United States Air Force. The C-130 is one of the only military aircraft to remain in continuous production for over 50 years with its original customer, as the updated C-130J Super Hercules.

[Wikipedia] RAF Marston Moor
RAF Marston Moor was a Royal Air Force airfield at Tockwith, North Yorkshire, during the Second World War. It was originally called RAF Tockwith, but confusion with RAF Topcliffe lead to the name change.
RAF Marston Moor and RAF Church Fenton were the closest airfields to West Yorkshire and would act as a defence should Leeds be attacked. As it happens Leeds was seldom bombed.
In 1943, group captain Leonard Cheshire was made the Station Commander. Following the death of Guy Gibson he requested to be transferred to the command of 617 Squadron. The move required him to voluntarily step down in rank from group captain to wing commander, which he did.
Marston Moor was also in control of RAF Rufforth and RAF Riccall.
During the war, American actor Clark Gable was stationed at the airfield before being relocated to RAF Polebrook.

Lancaster Bomber taxis on the runway
Probably the most famous Allied bomber of World War II, the Lancaster had impressive flying characteristics and operational performance. The Lancaster was the RAF's only heavy bomber capable of carrying the 12,000-lb Tallboy and 22,000-lb Grand Slam bombs. The aircraft demonstrated superbly its right to fame with the daring and precise raids on the Ruhr dams in May 1943, and also the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz in November 1944.
Thousands of Canadian aircrew and other personnel served with the RCAF and RAF's Lancaster squadrons in England; and thousands of Canadians at home worked at Victory Aircraft in Malton (Toronto), Ontario, where they produced over 400 Lancaster Mk X's. In total, more than 7300 Lancasters rolled off the production lines in Britain and Canada. Only two still fly.
The CWH Museum has dedicated its Mynarski Memorial Lancaster to the memory of Pilot Officer Andrew Charles Mynarski, VC, of 419 (Moose) Squadron, 6 (RCAF) Group. Mynarski won 6 Group's only Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth's highest award for gallantry in battle. On the night of 12/13 June 1944, his Lancaster X was shot down by a Luftwafffe night fighter. As the bomber plunged earthwards, Mynarski, his flying clothing afire, tried in vain to free his trapped rear gunner from the jammed rear turret. Miraculously, the gunner lived to relate the story of Mynarski's bravery. Unfortunately, Mynarski died from his severe burns.

Haunted RAF Sandtoft, Lincolnshire - History, hauntings, EVPs & Mediums
Mark Newman and I visited former RAF Sandtoft on the 30th July 2013 to see who we could communicate with in spirit and also conduct a PSB7 Session - this was the first airfield of the day
A very atmospheric, yet very sad, fear ridden airfield with a number of spirits wandering about
I prefer plain EVPs as I can guarantee that they are not radio stations - which is a major criticism of the spiritboxes
Of note was the PSB7 refusing to work when we tried a Spiritbox session at the former Memorial despite changing to new batteries

Air India Flight 182
Air India Flight 182 was an Air India flight operating on the Montreal–London–Delhi route. On 23 June 1985, this Boeing 747-237B (c/n 21473/330, reg VT-EFO) – was destroyed by a bomb at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,400 m). It crashed into the Atlantic Ocean while in Irish airspace. It was the first bombing of a 747 jumbo jet. A total of 329 people were killed, including 268 Canadian citizens, 27 Britons, and 24 Indians. The majority of the victims were Canadian citizens of Indian ancestry. The incident was the largest mass murder in Canadian history. The bombing of Air India 182 occurred at the same time as the Narita Airport bombing. Investigators believe that the two plots were linked, and that the group responsible was aiming for a double-bombing. However, the bomb at Narita exploded before it could be loaded onto the plane.
Canadian law enforcement determined that the main suspects in the bombing were members of the Sikh militant group Babbar Khalsa. The attack is thought to have been a retaliation against India for the operation carried out by the Indian Army Operation Blue Star to flush out several hundred Sikh who were within the premises of the Golden temple and the surrounding structures ordered by the Indian government, headed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Though a handful of members were arrested and tried, Inderjit Singh Reyat, a Canadian national, remains the only person legally convicted of involvement in the bombing. Singh pleaded guilty in 2003 to manslaughter. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for building the bombs that exploded aboard Flight 182 and at Narita.

Dambusters veteran, Johnny Johnson, talks about the secrecy surrounding the raid
Johnny Johnson, one of the last remaining aircrew who flew in 617 Squadron's Dambuster raid, explained in a one-off interview with the RAF Benevolent Fund about the strict secrecy of information that was enforced by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, during the training that preceded the raid. Because Operation Chastise (the operational name assigned to the raid) critically relied on both the element of surprise and the dams of the Ruhr remaining unprotected from water-surface attacks, it was of paramount importance that no information found its way to German intelligence.
