ALLIGATOR ALLEY in Summerdale, Al
Description
Alligator Alley - Summerdale, Alabama
Alligator Alley is a wonderful park where you can see and interact with alligators. My favorite part was feeding them. You can buy a cup of approved alligator food to give to them. They loved it! Check this place out if you are ever on the way down to the beach.

From Wiki:
An alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. The two living species are the American alligator (A. mississippiensis) and the Chinese alligator (A. sinensis). In addition, several extinct species of alligator are known from fossil remains. Alligators first appeared during the Paleocene epoch about 66 million years ago.
The name alligator is probably an anglicized form of el lagarto, the Spanish term for the lizard, which early Spanish explorers and settlers in Florida called the alligator. Later English spellings of the name included allagarta and alagarto.
An average adult American alligator's weight and length is 360 kg (790 lb) and 4.0 m (13.1 ft), but they sometimes grow to 4.4 m (14 ft) long and weigh over 450 kg (990 lb). The largest ever recorded, found in Louisiana, measured 5.84 m (19.2 ft). The Chinese alligator is smaller, rarely exceeding 2.1 m (6.9 ft) in length. In addition, it weighs considerably less, with males rarely over 45 kg (99 lb).
Alligators are native only to the United States and China.
American alligators are found in the southeast United States: all of Florida and Louisiana, the southern parts of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, coastal South and North Carolina, East Texas, the southeast corner of Oklahoma, and the southern tip of Arkansas. According to the 2005 Scholastic Book of World Records, Louisiana has the largest alligator population. The majority of American alligators inhabit Florida and Louisiana, with over a million alligators in each state. Southern Florida is the only place where both alligators and crocodiles live side by side

Gator Alley Boardwalk Bounces Back
DAPHNE, Ala. (WPMI) Remember that famous line from the movie 'Field of Dreams': If you build it, they will come.
And that's what happened with Gator Alley Boardwalk in Daphne.Sort of.
It's a series of boardwalks that run under Highway 98 near I-10.
The Eastern Shore Trail Blazers had the idea for a trail, and so it was built, said Richard Johnson, director of Daphne Public Works, and this section became so popular, because of the alligators here in D'Olive Creek that it kind of organically gained the name Gator Alley.
You see, Gator Alley Boardwalk never set out to be Gator Alley Boardwalk. It just kind of happened.
And instead of messing with success, the city made it better, expanding the boardwalk, adding parking and signage, even some benches nearby.
And the visitors just keep on coming
It's a great natural resource, said Daphne Mayor Dane Haygood, it's well located, and where else can you be and go this close to a natural habitat? He means alligators.
But on April 29th, Gator Alley Boardwalk had an unwelcome visitor. Oh, the gators didn't mind it, but the boardwalk sure did.
That's when the rains came... so much rain that D'Olive Creek that usually flows beneath Gator Alley Boardwalk, instead, pushed right through it.The damage did not go unnoticed.
We had two major roads in the city washed out in the flood event of April 29th, recalled Johnson, and you would think that would generate a lot of inquiry and calls from the public. But, actually Gator Alley has received more calls about when it's going to be repaired, when it's going to be reopened, than any other damage we received in the city.
Well, gator lovers, take heart.
The boardwalk is on the rebound.
Right now, new pilings are being set, boards and rails installed... the missing and damaged portions are being rebuilt.
The cost? $150,000.
The city's share? About 12 percent of that.
The rest is covered by emergency funds by the state and federal government.
Well, we hope with some little tweaks in the design and the little difference in construction, hopefully it won't happen again, said Johnson. The repairs are on track and ahead of schedule.
The mayor call it a concerted effort-- ...to make it where everybody that comes can enjoy it and have a pleasant time, in addition to enjoying these alligators in their natural habitat.
If we build it... they will come!
