ALMA MATER RETURNS
Anchor Lead: The alma mater returned to campus last Wednesday.. students watched from the sidelines as she took her rightful place the pedestal at wright and green
Nat pop: construction
Nat pop: I took a selfie with alma, like on her head.
All eyes were on the alma mater as students and faculty reminisced while watching crews work for nearly four hours to put the statue back on its base. Graduate Arthur Gutzke didn't have alma there for his graduation in December 20-12 and says he's waiting for closure.
I feel like it's a conclusion. Yeah you know I've actually earned this picture now. This is something you do when you graduate from Illinois and if you can't do it you kind of get the feeling that it's not over yet. Well I haven't gotten my picture infront of it yet
Brand Manager for public affairs' joel steinfeldt says alma's more than just a statue.
Alma is kind of the figurative mother of the Illinois family.. and mom's been out of town being taken care of for two years so it's important for the students who graduate and take picures in front of her for her to come back
STANDUP—after nearly 600 days of restoration, the alma mater is finally back on campus and back to her original bornze color. Experts say it won't need to be restored again for another century.
And after that century... the future will find a time capsule stored in the base of the statue holding about 100 items from an LED light to a student I-card.
Whenever it's opened it will literally be greetings from the past to the happy children of the future.
The iconoic statue welcomes students with it's arms outstretched-- a representation of the quote on the base-- and will be there to continue to welcome future generations.
I mean it's when everyone thinks of when they think of tradition. You know you think of the statue every time you come back. See how it's doing. I mean it's what everyone thinks of when they come back to Illinois

Hail to the Orange Aerial UIUC
Aerial view of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign set to Hail to the Orange Shown are aerial views of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign landmarks accompanied by the music of Hail to the Orange as performed by The Marching Illini (special thanks to Prof. Barry Houser for allowing the use of this rendition). Greg Elliott, aerospace engineering professor at Illinois, created the aerial filming and video using a hexacopter (DJI F550 with a NAZA-M v2 controller with GPS) and stabilized camera (GoPro Hero3 with a Zenmuse H3-2D Gimbal).
Elliott recently developed for Aerospace Engineering at Illinois a course (AE498UAV) covering the design and manufacturing of remote controlled UAVs for civilian applications. Students enrolled in AE also utilize multi-rotor quadcopters in Aerospace Decision Algorithms (AE 483), a required senior-level course that teaches the students how to integrate sensors, actuators, and control methodologies utilized in these vehicles. On the research side, AE faculty, including Profs. Michael Selig, Tim Bretl, and Soon-Jo Chung, study the aerodynamics, propulsion, flight mechanics, sensing, and control aspects of fixed wing, rotorcraft and flapping wing UAVs.
AE at Illinois offers undergraduate and graduate courses in astronautics and aeronautics covering the fundamentals and advanced topics associated with unmanned space and air vehicles including their design, dynamics and control algorithms, aerodynamics, propulsion, materials and structures. Courses in the curriculum and student projects allow hands-on experiences with satellites, and both multi-rotor and fixed wing aircraft. For more, please visit AE's website (

Alma Mater at UI moved
The iconic Alma Mater statue at the University of Illinois in Urbana was moved from its pedestal Tuesday, August 7 for restoration. It's the first time the statue has been moved since the 1981. Alma and her two sidekicks, Labor and Learning, will be taken to a restoration business in Forest Park, Illinois for renovation. She's expected to be back on her perch near Wright and Green in time for Commencement in May 2013.
Illinois Icons
In celebration of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s sesquicentennial, the BigTen Network and the University of Illinois tell the stories of three men who left enduring marks on the campus. Max Abramovitz created spaces for the campus to come together. Robert Zuppke changed football and expressed himself through art and Lorado Taft gave Illinois its most beloved symbol, the Alma Mater. The program was produced by Tim Hartin, Kaitlin Southworth and Alison Davis Wood for the University of Illinois Department of Athletics and Office of Public Affairs.

Live from Campustown: The Alma Mater Returns to the U of I
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois' Alma Mater sculpture is set to return to campus after a year and a half away.
Campus officials say the 85-year-old sculpture will begin its trip home from Chicago early on Wednesday and be back in place on the corner of Wright and Green streets midmorning. The installation should take several hours.
The 10,000-pound bronze sculpture was created by artist Lorado Taft. Generations of students have had their photos taken with it.
The statue was moved and disassembled in in 2012 for cleaning and a massive restoration.
The university will provide updates on the Alma Mater's progress on Twitter and stream the installation online.

Find a Better Way - Commencement speech - University of Illinois - May 14, 2016 - Jeff Huber
I was honored to be asked to speak at my alma mater, the University of Illinois, for Commencement this year. My message for this year’s graduates? Find a better way.
Conditions were a bit challenging -- it was really chilly, with a ~30mph wind (so some audio dropouts). But, midwestern folks are hardy stock...

Not Just College: Fall Welcome from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Welcome to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The Illinois experience includes all of the more obvious elements: a broad range of programs and classes, award-winning faculty members, a large and diverse student body, sustainable, state-of-the-art facilities, innovative research and the list goes on and on.
But a truly transformative learning experience doesn’t stop when students leave class any more than life stops when the sun goes down.
Because those moments paired with excellent academics are what make up the full experience. Our students don’t just take a bunch of classes. They find out who they want to be.
