UGLY TRUTH Luang Prabang Alms Ceremony
Location: Luang Prabang, Loas
The alms ceremony is a beautiful tradition that has been spoiled by tourists. Everyone jostles to get the best picture of the monks. As one person moves in closer, so do the rest. The next thing you know, people are standing two feet away from the monks during the alms ceremony.
I believe at one point in the time, the alm ceremony in Luang Prabang was a beautiful ceremony, but sadly it's now turned into more of a tourist spectacle.
Even though we've been extremely negative of the giving of the alms ceremony up until this point, I do believe it's worth the trip. If you're going to be in Luang Prabang, don't skip the alms ceremony. However, mentally prepare yourself ahead of time for the rude tourists you encounter. I believe that you can go to the alms ceremony without contributing to the problem. Just stay on the opposite side of the street and sit respectfully as the monks walk by. The rude tourist are going to show up anyway. You might as well at least get a glimpse of the monks collecting their alms.

Hi, I am Eileen from Belgium, nice to meet you. I started this channel two years ago but was not updating on a regular basis. After making some videos for friends and family, I realized this is something I love to do. I got inspired by some of my favorite YouTube channels such as Travellight, Kara & Nate, The Way Away and the Bucketlist Family. I accepted the challenge to visit all Belgian municipalities and because I love to travel, I do it as often as possible. I just got back from one month in Asia and the next trip is already booked!

Alam Giving Ceremony has been the tradition of the people in Luang Prabang where every morning, the people will give the food to the monks that walk in line to the residential areas,
ALMS GIVING CEREMONY IN LUANG PRABANG, LAOS
Luang Prabang's alms giving ceremony is a longstanding tradition in Laos Buddhist culture. It takes place daily as the sun rises, beginning on the main street of Luang Prabang before spreading out to all the side streets. Around 200 Buddhist monks depart from temples in this UNESCO-listed town to gather their daily meal. The tradition of alms gathering dates back to the 14th century – locals wake early to prepare the food for the monks and wait quietly by the roadside to give their gifts. While the main purpose is for locals to give alms to the monks, you might also notice small children kneeling with baskets. Monks often share some of their alms with them so that they can take food back to their family.
This daily ceremony is both peaceful and spiritual and gives you a wonderful opportunity to experience an ancient Lao tradition. You should buy your offerings (usually food) in advance and arrive with plenty of time to spare as it’s considered very offensive to disrupt the ceremony once it has commenced. Follow the guidance of the locals by kneeling down to present your offering to the monks. Some of the common gifts you can offer include rice, fresh fruit, and traditional snacks. The procession is quite lengthy and therefore not suitable for very young children or those who cannot sit quietly for more than a few minutes. There are many unspoken rules regarding etiquette when attending an alms giving ceremony. If you’re not making an offering, maintain an appropriate distance so that you won’t get in the way of those participating in alms giving. Shoulders, chests and legs must be covered in modest clothing as a mark of respect. You should also remain at a suitable distance from the monk. You can take photos, but do so from a distance and never use a camera flash. When seated, shoes and socks must be removed with your feet tucked underneath as you observe the ceremony in absolute silence. Female attendees must keep their head lower than the monks when giving alms. Don’t talk to or touch the monks at any time, even when making an offering. Location: Sisavangvong Road, Luang Prabang, Laos

Alms giving ceremony in Luang Prabang in Laos
Sunday (5/1/2020):- ALMS GIVING CEREMONY IN LUANG PRABANG IN LAOS. .Every morning at approximately 0530 hrs before the break of daylight all the monks from the various monasteries in Luang Prabang walk down the city roads collecting alms from donors .Tourists sit on small stools on the footpath near the main city square facing the Post Office next to Night Market. Normally rice and other eatables are put into the donation bags of the monks. I donated boiled cooked rice as do most tourists.Rare to get to witness a traditional Buddhist ceremony. This is a daily ceremony every morning. The monks pass by alongside our hostel on their way back to one of the monasteries. The locals residing next door to our hostel is seen giving the child monks alms.Boiled cooked rice is given as alms and is a regular daily ritual in Luang Prabang Old Town. :- Seafarer/Blogger/Traveller Rudolph.A.Furtado
Tourists, cameras, monks and alms in Luang Prabang, Laos
Luang Prabang is a city famous for its numerous temples and pagodas, and for the daily ceremony of the sunrise alms procession by monks. This is a ritual valued by many local people as a part of their heritage and spiritual tradition, but seen also by tourists as a photo opportunity. During a June 2014 visit to Luang Prabang, I witnessed the alms ceremony, and met a group of young Lao people determined to educate tourists to their town about the importance of respecting the traditions of their hosts.
For another example of insensitive behavior by tourists, see my video of a 'Long neck village' (as the tour cmpanies cll it) near Chiang Mai in Thailand (

Monks Alms Giving Ceremony Laos with Kids - World School Travel Video 2018
In this Family Travel Vlog we take part in the Alms Giving Ceremony in Luang Prabang, Laos with kids which was a great experience. Paige went down for the count with a little stomach bug so I did some exploring with the older girls including some wats and Mount Phousi.

Paige decided to not follow the cardinal rule of wash hands often and keep them out of her mouth and she ended up having the “worst night ever” her words not mine. It was a pretty tough night for her and Lua but luckily she was able to recover quickly.
While she was down for the count, the girls and I took some bikes to go and explore old city Luang Prabang. We saw many wats as well as monks preparing for the festival of lights. After lunch, we hiked up Mount Phousi, where I managed to lose my family. Luckily it’s a small town and we were able to meet up again a short time later.
The next morning we woke up super early for the Alms Giving Ceremony. Unfortunately, things have become far more commercial over the years with now busloads of tourist coming in from resorts outside of town, but if you get off the main drag, away from the noise, it can really be a humble experience. Lexi actually chose to wake up early in the morning a second time because she enjoyed it so much.
The big show of Boun Lai Heua Fai, aka as the Festival of Lights or Moon Festival, is next.
