Alnwick Castle England
Alnwick Castle England
Our visit to NorthUmberland in England led us to the charming market town of Alnwick and the great castle where parts of the Harry Potter movies were shot. It is one of the most spectacular castles we have ever visited. Not only the Alnwick Castle but the gardens are really worth seeing.

Alnwick has given me everything - Cyrus Pattinson #TNLMyHometown
Never ever would have thought I'm gonna be on GB and inches from going to the Olympics Alnwick boxer Cyrus Pattinson is showcasing his hometown in a new National Lottery initiative which highlights good cause investment at a local level.
The Northumberland southpaw is one of six National Lottery funded athletes taking part in the My Hometown campaign. The series explores how the upbringing of each star inspired their sporting success and how support from the National Lottery has helped them and others in their local community.
If you’ve ever wondered where the money raised from selling National Lottery tickets goes, then National Lottery Good Causes has the answer.
Since 1994, National Lottery players have raised a staggering £40 billion for Good Causes across the UK (that’s £30 million a week), and here on our YouTube page you can read about and see photos and videos of just some of the projects, groups and individuals who’ve benefited from National Lottery funding.
With money being distributed to deserving causes across the arts, sport, heritage, charity/voluntary sector, health, education and the environment, there’s some really diverse stuff available to view here.

3 MINUTES/ A VISIT TO: White Swan Hotel, Alnwick/ 2000
I traveled to the UK back in 2000 to obtain footage for a documentary about the Titanic I wanted to do. I traveled from Los Angeles to London, Belfast, Edinburgh, Alnwick, Liverpool, Cardiff South Wales, Southampton and ended up in Paris.
Along the way I shot video in places that were Titanic related, and others, just to visit with some friends. When I returned home in April of 2000 I didn’t end up doing anything with the footage for quite some time.
Finally in 2018 I released my documentary “Titanic, HW 401: A Personal Reflection” on YouTube. I used much of the special footage I shot for my documentary and very little of the extra footage that I shot on my trip.
I’ve edited the extra footage together and am including some of the places I visited in my “3 Minutes, A Visit To:” series of videos here on YouTube. In this very last installment of “3 Minutes, A Visit To:” I visit The White Swan Hotel in Alnwick, UK. More about this visit can be found below.

White Swan Hotel
The White Swan Hotel is a 300 year old coaching inn which is located in the market town of Alnwick, Northumberland, England.
In 1936 the RMS Olympic, which was one of Titanic’s sister ships, was scrapped and the interior fittings sold. The then owner of the White Swan, who was a frequent traveler on the RMS Olympic, bought the paneling from the ships first class lounge and had it installed into his hotel. He also purchased several elements from the Olympics first class staircase.
To this day many who visit the White Swan Hotel do so just to see this very special room.
I first set up in the lobby and then made my way back to the Olympic Suite. I spent about an hour shooting the various walls and fixtures of the room.
Later I headed outside to get some outside establishing shots of the White Swan.

Alnwick, Northumberland
Alnwick originally prospered as a medieval market town, and it still retains many of its cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings which now house a range of specialist shops, family businesses and some of the original coaching inns.

BARTER BOOKS IN ALNWICK, ENGLAND
Barter Books is a second-hand bookshop in the historic English market town of Alnwick, Northumberland, owned and run by Stuart and Mary Manley. It has over 350,000 visitors a year, 40% of whom are from outside the area, and is one of the largest second-hand bookstores in Europe. It is considered a local tourist attraction and has been described as the British Library of second-hand bookshops.
The bookshop is in the Victorian Alnwick railway station, designed by William Bell and opened in 1887.The station was in use until the closure of the Alnwick branch line in 1968; Barter Books was opened in 1991.
The shop is notable for its use of a barter system, whereby customers can exchange their books for credit against future purchases; standard cash purchases are also available.
Original copy of the 1939 Keep Calm And Carry On poster, in Barter Books, Alnwick, Northumberland.
Barter Books has also been subject to crime on occasions. On 3 May 2007 a local newspaper, the Northumberland Gazette, reported that a book worth over £2,000 was returned to the book shop 5 years after it was stolen.
Barter Books hit the headlines in 2000 when the owner discovered, in a box of old books bought at an auction, a World War II poster from 1939. The slogan, Keep Calm and Carry On, and the simple design have turned it into an international phenomenon; and it has been on the walls of places as diverse as Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street and the US Embassy in Belgium.
