The town is located within the area in which the invading Japanese army suffered their first land defeat in the Pacific War in 1942, before the Kokoda Track battle. A memorial park at the old battle site commemorates the event. Alotau became the provincial capital in 1969 after it was shifted from Samarai.

Trapped in Time at Kiriwina! Jan 26, 2017
The Trobriand Islands are part of Papua New Guinea, but this is officially known as the Kiriwina Islands. Found in the archipelago of eastern New Guinea, these islands cover 175 square miles and are home to one of the world’s most untouched, intact island cultures. The total population of 12,000; the language is Kilivila; the government is a monarchy; and the currency is the Kina.
In addition to white sand beaches, an amazing attraction is the islanders’ body decoration. Locals spend hours weaving blossoms& grasses, seashells ad tortoise shells, metal bits and leather strips, beads and stones and pig’s jawbones into their garments. They also paint their faces and thread feathers and garlands into their hair. The tribe we visited is run by the females – maybe that is why they take so much time decorating themselves!

Papua New Guinea Tour Video
Papua New Guinea Tour Video - Travelling in PNG can be challenging. With almost no tourism infrastructure and limited information available in books and on websites, it can feel like youre stepping into the great unknown. But this is exactly why travellers find this country so compelling. Nothing is contrived for tourists and every experience is authentic - even the main island of Bougainville is a largely DIY travel experience.
The striking natural beauty and myriad complex cultures offer some riveting and truly life-affirming experiences. The island of New Guinea, of which Papua New Guinea is the eastern part, is only one-ninth as big as Australia, yet it has just as many mammal species, and more kinds of birds and frogs. PNG is Australias biological mirror-world. Both places share a common history going back tens of millions of years, but Australia is flat and has dried out, while PNG is wet and has become mountainous. As a result, Australian kangaroos bound across the plains, while in PNG they climb in the rainforest canopy.

Milne Bay Island Projects
Studies indicate that the Kuyawa and Munuwata Islands of Milne Bay are on the verge of being stripped of their food and water resources at the mercy of climate change.
The SPC or the South Pacific Community and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) found that their problem stems from the increase in population over recent years and the eroding shorelines that have limited land area over time.
Climate Change advocate Latin N’Drihin has been working closely with the SPC/GIZ to conduct these studies and awareness programs.
One only has to walk along the shorelines of Kuyawa Island and Munuwata Island to see the effects of climate change.
Although islanders have taken it upon themselves to protect their shorelines by building stonewalls barricaded only by fishing nets, N’Drihin said they are unaware that deep rooted customs like the infamous yam planting season are a culprit.
During this season there is a mass harvest of mangrove trees; their branches apparently are the most resilient to weathering on the island, so they are used to support the crawling yam plant.
Mangroves are natural a barrier against the tides.
As a result, the population on the island itself is fast becoming a problem with the receding shorelines.
Islanders have identified poor academic performance of children on the island as a driving factor.
They believe that if their children had access to better education facilities the chances of them passing out into tertiary institutions will reduce the number of people left to depend on the island.
Survival itself is a daily struggle for the islanders whose only source of water is shallow wells; the largest catchments being water tanks only provided in places like schools.
The SPC/GIZ technical working group is looking help salvage what’s left of their islands food and water security, by first introducing additional crops so they don’t completely destroy their mangrove population.
