She uses haunting photos to show the deep history of land
Artist Meryl McMaster roams the Ottawa landscape as she tells you how her photographs connect to history, her own Indigenous identity and childlike wonder.
»Subscribe to CBC Arts to watch more videos:
For her new series of photographs, artist Meryl McMaster has been at work to build an elongated costume — one like a column, covered in spheres made from emergency blankets, the kind that look like foil. She's been building a headpiece to go with it, and she's going to shoot the photos somewhere a little further from Ottawa, where she's based — maybe the Scarborough Bluffs.
It's all part of an exhibition she has coming up at Ryerson University during the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in May. Both the costumes and the locations have been part of her learning about her own heritage as a person from a mixed cultural background (McMaster is Plains Cree as well as British and Dutch). And she hopes that in sharing that learning through her photography, she can teach Canadians something too.

Ottawa - City Video Guide
Ottawa is Canada's picturesque capital, full of cultural attractions and natural beauty. The city's Rideau Canal, which is great for ice-skating in winter and boating in summer, is surrounded by pathways for walking and cycling on warmer days. The Ottawa locks were one of the city's first structures and are still functioning today.
Next to the locks is Parliament Hill where each summer morning the crowds watch the Changing of the Guard Ceremony under the Peace Tower. In summer, the pop-up terraces along the downtown waterfront and al-fresco restaurants in districts such as Little Italy draw the crowds. A good place to try Ottowa's Beavertail pastries and Quebec's fresh fruit is the ByWard Market.
The locks' 1827 Commissariat Building is now the Bytown Museum. Ottawa other museums include the National Gallery of Canada, the working farm of the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, the Canada Aviation And Space Museum. Cross over to Quebec and visit the Canadian Museum of Civilization, a recreation of the past. While here, venture into Gatineau Park with its walking trails, lakes and the MacKenzie King Estate.
Come to Ottawa, a great place to start your voyage to discover Canada's unique culture and breathtaking wilderness.

Justin Huang Ford - aka dj_navi
Navi is Justin Huang Ford, who first emulated the amen break using a combination of the base of his hand and his thumb on his grade 5 homeroom desk. He went on to become a Kiwanis award winning Suzuki Method piano player, and a rhythm guitar player in a plethora of self created bands throughout high-school.
He returned to the breakbeat while completing his Bachelors of Architecture at Carleton University. This time utilizing a friends pair of Gemini's that were a real crapper to keep in pitch, a similarly junky Gemini mixer, and some filthy drum and bass/jungle plates. He has since refined his djing skills while rocking out anything that has intricate drums, rude bwoy bass, and rides atop dense layers of atmospherics.
In 2005 he started [spatial breakbeat research] which mixes a wide range of mediums (architecture, fiction, poetry, music, graphics, animation, web design, illustrative art) to create an immersive environment that adds texture and depth to urban investigations.
His illustrative work has always been informed and influenced by the sights and sounds that he surrounds him - architecture, breakbeats, urbanism, and anime are some of the ingredients on display . Two series of work entitled a slight refrain and two shades darker have been displayed both in Toronto, Canada and Santiago, Chile.
Most recently, he has spent his nights at work in the studio carefully composing intricately textured music which blends his diverse history of musical passion; while spending his days as the project architect on an ambitious project at a Toronto architectural firm.
