Alsace in motion - Hyperlapse video
Last month we visited Riquewihr and Colmar, the most beautiful small town in the world. The Alsace Region is famous for its well preserved medieval towns, beautiful houses and flower-lined canals. Riquewihr is the inspiration village for the original Beauty and the Beast and it's not hard to see why... Cobblestone pathways, Renaissance architecture and colorful structures, it's a perfect fairy tale village! Experience it in 100x speed in this timelapse video.

The Beautiful Waterways of Alsace & Lorraine, France | European Waterways
In the Summer and Autumn, Panache cruises the beautiful waterways of Alsace & Lorraine. It is a region in Eastern France with a unique mix of French and German cultures, Baroque and Romanesque architecture, storybook villages, diverse culinary specialities and wonderful white wines.
The Canal de la Marne au Rhin (195 miles - 155 locks) connects the River Marne in Vitry-le-François with the River Rhine in Strasbourg. Combined with the canalized part of the Marne, it allows transport between Paris and eastern France.
Built between 1838 and 1853, the Canal de la Marne au Rhin was built to solve the problem of going through the Vosges Mountains, especially climbing up its eastern side to its lower point - the Col de Saverne. This was first solved by means of a ladder of 17 locks, allowing a level change of 146 feet over a distance of 2.5 miles. In 1969, the ladder of 17 locks was replaced by a transversal inclined plane allowing a barge to glide effortlessly up or down the mountainside using a system of weights and balances. The canal
also has 4 tunnels ranging in length from 0.3 miles to 3 miles.
Bounded by the Rhine on the east and the Alsatian slopes of the softly rolling Vosges Mountains on the west, the Canal de la Marne au Rhin crosses the northern part of the French province of Alsace and Lorraine traveling via Nancy, Lagarde and Saverne. It traverses a land of quaint villages, cities, and sprawling vineyards producing Riesling and other fine Alsatian wines. Half-timbered houses with pretty window boxes, onion-domed church-towers, and intricate wrought-ironwork give villages a festival air. Alsace has changed hands many times over the centuries.
Germany thinks the mountains are the natural border; France thinks it's the Rhine River. Having been a political pawn for 1,000 years, Alsace has a hybrid culture

driver view Viking tour bus ride from Kehl, Germany to Barrage Vauban in Strasbourg, France (1 of 2)
This is part 1 of 2 showing a driver's view of the narrated Viking Cruises bus ride from Kehl, Germany through Strasbourg, France to the Barrage Vauban on June 28, 2016. This is an edited re-post because I realized the first couple of minutes of my original post had us just sitting in the bus before the tour started. This video begins as it should with the actual narrated tour bus ride. This was an included tour on our Rhine Getaway Cruise meaning there was no extra charge for it. FYI, during my just now re-watching this video, it really strikes me how similar the street and highway signs are here in Strasbourg to those on the island of Guadeloupe in the West Indies which is technically part of France. It totally looks like it is--the highway and street signs are exactly the same as in Strasbourg and unlike those anywhere else (that I've seen).

Another walk
A walk through Freiburg with an intro in Alemannic(Alemannisch) language. The Alemannen, a mixture of many Germanic tribes and other peoples (ale mannen means all men), came from the north east of Germany to France(Alsace), Suisse, southwest Germany and west Austria in about 300 a.c., and still a language called Alemannisch is spoken in these countries by many people - it´s German, but not high German, and it is similar to middle high German from the middle ages.
The man on the video is telling about a walk through the forest nearby the rhine river, which seems to be a jungle like Amazonas.
The following music is an alemannic song called S´Büwele molt...Schmetterling.... (In high German:Das Bübchen malt...
The little boy is painting...butterfly...)
The next song is from the seventh book of madrigals by Monteverdi, the name is se pur destina.
Please excuse the bad quality, I have to find out, how to make it better, I had no experience with videos before end of February 07.

France: Castle Haut-Koenigsbourg & Monkey Park
Bonjour from France
The Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is situated in a strategic location on a rocky spur overlooking the Alsatian plain; as a result it was used by successive powers from the Middle Ages until the Thirty Years' War when it was abandoned. From 1900 to 1908 it was restored under the direction of Emperor Wilhelm II.
The ruins had been listed as a monument historique since 1862. In 1993, the restored castle was officially designated as a national historic site by the French Ministry of Culture. Today, it is one of the most famous tourist attractions of the region, located on the Alsace wine route.
It is unknown when a castle was first built on the site. The first explicit mention that is known dates from 1147. It took its name from the original Königsburg (German, King's Castle) in 1192.
The Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle is located at Orschwiller, Alsace, France, in the Vosges mountains just west of Sélestat.

Prosecutor Says No Evidence of Foul Play in Anthony Bourdain's Death
The prosecutor of Colmar in France’s Alsace region has confirmed that Anthony Bourdain hanged himself in the bathroom of his hotel room in France.
According to the Associated Press, prosecutor Christian de Rocquigny said that on Friday, the famous chef, writer, and host of CNN’s Parts Unknown, took the belt from his hotel bathrobe to commit suicide.
Rocquigny said that, “there is no element that makes us suspect that someone came into the room at any moment.” He also revealed that a medical expert confirmed that there were no signs of violence.

In the Hometown of Bartholdi, Who Gave Us the Statue of Liberty
Wherever you travel, there are artistic and cultural riches waiting to be appreciated. Just be there, take the time to notice it, add information, and shake. That’s our challenge as travelers.
I have spent 40 years teaching budget tips. But only recently have I discovered the most important budget tip of all: Understand what you are experiencing, and it becomes twice as rewarding. Think about it: If you equip yourself with good information and use it, a travel moment — for the same price — is suddenly worth double. That’s been my theme this year as I’ve worked on my guidebooks from Sicily to Lisbon, Belfast to Orkney, and now here in France.
Join me in a quiet Colmar courtyard to simply appreciate a statue by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the man who made our Statue of Liberty. He devoted much of his life to blessing our country with a statue that celebrates what he believed makes America great. And in this smaller statue — celebrating the great pillars of the world — Bartholdi trumpets many of the same values: hard work, education, justice, and patriotism.

Dijon France • The Impressive Notre Dame de Dijon and Local Dijon Mustard Shops
Dijon France - The Impressive Notre Dame de Dijon and Local Dijon Mustard Shops. Dijon is a modern, growing city with a well-designed boat harbor. It is the center of Côte d'Or and was the ancient capital of Burgundy in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Visitors can wend their way through the narrow streets of the old quarter and may be drawn to the city's numerous museums; the Ducal Palace, which opens onto the square; the Parliament Building; and the 13th century Cathedral St-Bénigne, with its Romanesque crypt.
A number of the buildings in Dijon sport roofs with glazed tiles of varied colors and patterns. And of course the mustard merchants sell their wares in beautiful faïence jars. The recipe for the world-famous condiment dates to the 4th century AD.
Burgundy
Burgundy boasts some of the world's finest wines with around 60,000 acres of sunlit vines and arguably the prettiest canals in France. The Burgundy Canal winds its way in smooth curves through the heart of renowned wine growing areas such as Chablis, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, or rises steeply through a flight of locks that appear like staircases.
The Nivernais Canal meanders alongside the picturesque River Yonne, through a largely undiscovered region near the Morvan Hills, passing sleepy villages and Charolais cattle grazing in the lush pastures. This is the original home of hotel barging with its hand-swung bridges and old logging sites, and where time seems to have stood still for centuries.
The landscape around the Burgundy Canal is one of rolling hills eroded over the centuries and covered in forests of oak, maple and pine and where spring, summer and autumn each leave a unique signature. Medieval towns are surrounded by unspoilt countryside and the wonderful markets have stalls brimming with fresh local products cultivated on the fertile plains.
This is a region with a vast variety of cheeses, in all shapes, sizes and colours, strong in character or mild and fresh and all can be enjoyed with full-bodied red Burgundies, or perhaps with lighter white Chablis wines. Burgundy's gastronomic tradition is certainly rich and diverse and a sedate cruise on a hotel barge along one of its delightful waterways will allow you to indulge in good food and wine, two of the real pleasures in life.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.
The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.
Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

Malaysia Peninsular Highlands, Pahang, Berjaya Hill @Cheng Pai Voyage
Malaysia Peninsular Cool Highland, Pahang, Berjaya Hill
马来西亚半岛,彭亨州属,成功高原
Berjaya Hills is a highland resort destination in Pahang near Bentong, located along Karak Highway after Genting Highlands. Perched 820 meters high on a mountain ridge, this integrated resort development features Colmar Tropicale - a French themed hotel and cultural village inspired by the traditional architecture of Alsace region in France.
The Japanese Village is also a popular tourist attraction within the vicinity, along with a spa resort (Chateau) and championship golf course. Perched high up among the highlands, the weather is a cooling climate of mist and sunshine, with lush, natural surroundings composed of rainforests and meandering valleys.
Established since 2000, Berjaya Hills is one of Malaysia's more recent hill resorts, but remains a major tourist destination for local and international visitors. Only an hour away from Kuala Lumpur by car, it shares its geographical boundaries with Genting Highlands across the Titiwangsa mountain range, presenting a convenient family retreat for the weekend in cooling weather.
The town of Bentong, a gateway to Fraser's Hill, is located 20km north of Bukit Tinggi Resort, while Janda Baik is a next door neighbour of Bukit Tinggi, specifically at the old town portion. Best visited throughout the year, average temperatures range from 25-30°C at day and 18-22°C at night.
Attraction
Japanese Village
The Japanese Village is a series of Japan-themed attractions, spread across a garden landscape on a hill top at Berjaya Hills, Bukit Tinggi. Located five minutes away by car or shuttle ride away from Colmar Tropicale Resort, the village also comprises the Japanese Tea House, Botanical Garden, Tatami Spa, Ume Tatami Suite and Ryo Zan Tei Restaurant. Here, visitors can explore rock pools, koi ponds, flower gardens and a Japanese tea house, which conducts a traditional tea ceremony several times daily. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the village is also a popular spot for bird watching, with views of the valley from strategic points along the gravel trails.
Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden is a nature park situated within the Japanese Village of Berjaya Hills at Bukit Tinggi. About five minutes away from Colmar Tropicale by car or shuttle bus, the garden straddles four acres of highland rainforest - only the jungle floor was cleared of its original vegetation to make way for show plants. The 1km cemented trail meanders through the garden in a loop, beginning with a sharp descent from the Ryo Zan Tei Japanese Restaurant at the entrance, then passing through neat clumps of flowers, herbs and ferns spread between the footpaths and trees. Some of the other features within the park include a jungle view deck, wooden bridge and orchid nursery.
Organic Farm
The Organic Farm is a vegetable plot and horticultural center hidden along a remote road at Berjaya Hills Bukit Tinggi. It can be reached within several minutes by car, by following the road immediately at left after the ticket booth (if coming from Kuala Lumpur or Bentong). The farm's popularity is more attuned to Chinese tourists who are culturally fond of fresh vegetables, usually visited as part of a group tour around Berjaya Hills. Meant as a show farm, the crops are not usually for sale, but visitors are allowed to eat some of the produce on-site as part of the tour experience. The small harvest of the farm also results in an inadequate supply for commercial retail.
Tatami Spa
Tatami Spa is a Japanese concept spa situated within the Japanese Village of Berjaya Hills Resort Bukit Tinggi, surrounded by lush greenery in a tranquil nature setting. Offering various holistic health treatments, including aromatheraphy, massage, body scrub and reflexology, the spa combines these experiences with furo, a Japanese ritual of bathing for relaxation and rejunevation. The spa center is housed within a two-storey bunglow, also of traditional Japanese design like the Ume Tatami Suite, and equipped with modern amenities. A highlight here is the outdoor onsen (hot spring) bath, housed within a pleasant rock garden facing the rainforest.

We Welcome The World !
Nice, France Cours Saleya and Old Town
The old town of Nice, in the south of France, is something very special – not so much because of historic monuments but just the total atmosphere, the environment, the simple walking lanes, the shops and the people. Also look at part 2, night in the Old Town: There are actual locals living here, there are kids out playing, the residents are upstairs looking down from their windows and you really get a feeling of community here, of authenticity, especially in the off-season when it's not too crowded with tourists walking through the lanes – that helps quite a bit. We will point out a nice way to navigate through this labyrinth to get you in and around show you the main highlights. There are a couple of main lanes there is Rue Droite that will take you right through the center of the old town, and then you take a left and walk along Rue de la Boucherie and that'll bring you down to the Place de Palais and then back to Cours Saleya. So it's kind of a round-trip right through the town and feel free to wander up these little side lanes.
