Koblenz is an ancient city in central Germany, and a gateway to the terraced vineyards and ruined castles of the Rhine Gorge. In the center, a monumental statue of William the Great marks the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. A cable car connects to the hilltop Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which hosts museums and cultural events. South along the river is the neo-Gothic Stolzenfels Castle with its gardens.
At the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers and the convergence of three low mountain ranges – the Hunsrück, the Eifel and the Westerwald – the Romans founded a military stronghold they named Confluentes for the site’s supreme strategic value. Modern-day Koblenz is a park- and flower-filled city that serves as both the northern gateway to the Romantic Rhine Valley and the northeastern gateway to the Moselle Valley, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the region.
Koblenz has about 110,000 inhabitants (2015); the surrounding area accounts for about 400,000 people in total. The name Koblenz originates from Latin (ad) confluentes, confluence or (at the) merging of rivers. Subsequently it was Covelenz and Cobelenz. In the local dialect the name is Kowelenz. After Mainz and Ludwigshafen am Rhein, it is the third largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate in terms of population. Koblenz lies in the Rhineland, 92 kilometers (57 mi) southeast of Cologne by rail.

From Trier to Koblenz, Germany
After Luxembourg, we headed out to Germany, and started the day with a guided visit of Trier, reputed to be one of the oldest cities in the country, and once the capital of the Roman province of Gallia Belgica. The town's story begins around 16 B.C. when the Romans called it Augusta Treverorum and it is proud of its two thousand year old heritage. Roman emperors, bishops, electors and prominent citizens all left their mark on the town, as can be seen in Trier's magnificent art treasures and unique architectural monuments. The best known is the Porta Nigra, the massive Roman town gate. Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is today the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps and has been designated a World Heritage Site. The name Porta Nigra originated in the Middle Ages due to the darkened color of its stone; the original Roman name has not been preserved. Locals commonly refer to the Porta Nigra simply as Porta.
The main thoroughfares in the extensive pedestrian zone leading from the Porta Nigra are Simeonstrasse, Hauptmarkt, Brotstrasse, Fleischstrasse and Neustrasse and its side streets. There are designer fashion boutiques, department stores, lifestyle shops, fair trade shops selling third-world goods, jewellers, specialist outlets, and antique shops -- a shopper's paradise.
We also visited the Karl Marx Haus, the birthplace of the great social philosopher.
After spending two hours here, we moved on to Koblenz. Siituated in the picturesque landscape of the Rhine and Moselle and surrounded by four low mountain ranges is the 2000-year-old town of Koblenz. Its abundance of cultural monuments and historic buildings, its cosy lanes and narrow alleyways, the relaxed and happy atmosphere of its squares and river promenades make Koblenz a friendly town. Fortress walls and towers, castles and palaces, monuments and parks paint a vivid picture of the town's eventful past.
Deutsches Eck (German Corner) is the name of a headland in Koblenz where the Mosel joins the Rhine. In 1897, nine years after the death of the German Emperor William I, the former emperor was honored with a giant equestrian statue bearing an inscription quoting a German poem: Nimmer wird das Reich zerstöret, wenn ihr einig seid und treu (Never will the Empire be destroyed, so long as you are united and loyal). Another inscription could be found at the statue dedicating it to Wilhelm der Große (William the Great).
Here we strolled around the Basilica of St. Castor (Kastorkirche), the oldest church in Koblenz. A fountain called Kastorbrunnen (Castor well) was built in front of the basilica during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. Pope John Paul II raised St. Castor to a basilica minor on 30 July 1991. This church is worth seeing for the historical events that have occurred in it, its extensive Romanesque construction and its largely traditional furnishings. Since 2002, the Basilica of St. Castor has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. In addition, it is a cultural property protected under the Hague Convention.
Here we had a good lunch of smoked fish and pork fillet, after devouring our dessert of strawberry cake (our best lunch ever).

The Electoral Palace Koblenz is one of the most important palace buildings of French early classicism in southwestern Germany and is one of the last royal castles built in Germany just before the French Revolution. Today, the castle in the middle section offers exclusive space for festive banquets, meetings and family celebrations.
The Electoral Palace in Koblenz, Germany, was the residence of the last Archbishop and Elector of Trier, Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony, who commissioned the building in the late 18th century. In the mid-19th century, the Prussian Crown Prince (later Emperor Wilhelm I) had his official residence there during his years as military governor of the Rhine Province and the Province of Westphalia. It now houses various offices of the federal government.
The Electoral Palace is one of the most important examples of the early French neoclassical great house in Southwestern Germany, and with Schloss Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel, the Prince Bishop's Palace in Münster and Ludwigsburg Palace, one of the last palaces built in Germany before the French Revolution. Since 2002 it has been part of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is also a protected cultural property under the Hague Convention.
The palace consists of a rectangular main building (Corps de logis) which extends in a north-south direction parallel to the nearby bank of the Rhine and two semi-circular wings which extend from it on the west side facing the city, enclosing the great forecourt of the palace (Schlossvorplatz). The main building is predominantly horizontally articulated; five of its 39 axes are emphasised by projecting bays. In the centre of the façade which faces the city, a portico with eight columns rises to the roofline. On the river side, a central bay has six columns and is surmounted by a relief by the sculptor Sebastian Pfaff depicting an allegory of the Rhine and the Mosel, the electoral coat of arms, lions symbolising sovereignty and symbols of the ecclesiastical and temporal power of the Archbishop Electors of Trier. The side wings, which were rebuilt to a height of two storeys in the 1950s, are unarticulated.
In commissioning the relatively unornamented and austere building from French architects, Clemens Wenceslaus broke with the previous tradition in Koblenz of architecture in the French and German Baroque tradition. It was built as a residence and city palace. However, as a function of its location on the bank of the Rhine, it was conceived of as part of the river landscape, and the rooms are so arranged as to either draw attention to the landscape or refer to it. From the entrance facing the city, the intended path leads through the vestibule and garden room to the palace garden on the riverbank. The rooms on the south and east sides offer an impressive view of the Middle Rhine Valley. The embracing of the landscape was in response to Clemens Wenceslaus' wish. The grand gesture of the forecourt encircled by the colonnaded wings has older antecedents, such as the colonnades of St. Peter's Square in Rome, the New Palace in Bayreuth, and Schwetzingen Castle.

Wallfahrtsort Kamp Bornhofen am Mittelrhein in Rheinland-Pfalz bei Boppard
Im Tal der Loreley zwischen St.Gorarshausen und Koblenz am Rheinkilometer 568 liegt der Wahlfahrtsort Kamp Bornhofen. Der Ort ist eine Ortsgemeinde im Oberen Mittelrheintal im Rhein-Lahn-Kreis in Rheinland-Pfalz.Sie gehört der Verbandsgemeinde Loreley an. Im Ortsteil Kamp, stehen alte Fachwerkhäuser, die noch gut erhalten sind. Zwischen den Häusern ist ein Blick auf den Rhein möglich der am 27. Juni 2002 in die Liste des Weltkulturerbes der UNESCO aufgenommen wurde.In der Pastor-Rentz-Straße 1a steht die katholische Pfarrkirche St. -Nikolaus . Gebaut wurde die Kirche von 1902 bis 1904 im Stil einer Pfeilerbasilika. Die Ehemalige St.Nikolai Kirche wurde im Jahr 1251 gebaut. Sie wurde leider von einen Brand 1954 zerstört.Übrig geblieben ist nur noch der braunfarbene Kirchturm, der heute noch steht. Immer um 11:15 legt der Schaufelraddampfer Goethe in Kamp an. Ob sie heute auch tutet??Gegenüber vom Hotel Rheinischer Hof befindet sich das Gefallenendenkmal des Krieger-Verein Germania. An der Rhein Promenade legen die Schiffe der Reedereien Köln-Düsseldorfer und der Loreley-Linie Weinand an. Außerdem kann man dort auch prima spazieren gehen! Etwas weiter die Promenade runter steht das Boot des Flösser und Schiffer-Verein Kamp Bornhofen EV. Ganz in der Nähe ist das Rathaus mit der alten Jugendherberge. In der Marienstraße neben der Hausnummer 2 steht die alte Karpelle von Kamp Bornhofen. Aus,welcher Zeit die Karpelle stammt ist nicht bekannt. Es wird vermutet, das sie im 18 Jahrhundert oder früher erbaut wurde. Ein bisschen weiter die Straße runter ist die Schule von Kamp. Neben der Schule ist die Freiwillige Feuerwehr. In Bornhofen befindet sich das Haus Marienberg. Es bietet für ältere und pflegebedürftige Menschen ein Zuhause. Direkt daneben steht das Kloster Bornhofen.Seit 2002 ist es auch Teil des UNESCO-Welterbes Oberes Mittelrheintal. Es ist ein Franziskanerkloster mit einer Marien-Wallfahrtskirche. Es liegt unterhalb des steilen Schieferfelsens in der Burgenstraße mit den Feindlichen Brüdern Burg Sterrenberg und Burg Liebenstein. Nun verlassen wir Bornhofen! Unten an der B42 ist der Sportplatz von Kamp Bornhofen. Er liegt direkt am Rhein und befindet sich neben dem Schwimmbad. Somit geht unsere kleine Reise durch Kamp Bornhofen auch schon wieder zu Ende

Die Alte Burg bei Langenenslingen - 3D-Photogrammetrie (structure from motion)
Die archäologische Denkmalpflege im Landesamt für Denkmalpflege im Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart setzt seit 2010 zunehmend Laserscanner und photogrammetrische Verfahren wie SFM (structure from motion) zur dreidimensionalen Dokumentation archäologischer Strukturen ein.
Die auf der Alte Burg bei Langenenslingen 2014 entdeckten monumentalen Mauerzüge rückten die eisenzeitliche Befestigung in den Fokus der archäologischen Forschungen.
Bis Oktober 2016 sind die spannenden Ergebnisse in einer Sonderausstellung auf dem Gelände des Freilichtmuseums Heuneburg - Keltenstadt Pyrene zu sehen.

Wandern in der Moseleifel - Traumpfad von Möntenich zur Burg Eltz(2018. 4k)
Die Wanderung startet in Möntenich am Parkplatz am Ortsende und geht durch den Ort Richtung Brohl und vor dem Ortsende links auf den M4 Weg bis fast zum Waldrand und wieder ins Tal zu den Fischteichen beim Fahlbach(M5). Dann durch den Hohlweg und durch die Felder zum Traumpfad. Dann weiter zum ersten Steg über den Elzbach. Dort meist entlang des Baches stößt man auf den Mosel-Camino der dann hoch führt zur Burg Eltz. Innerhalb der Burg hat man einen herrlichen Blick über das Elztal und auch die Burgruine Trutzeltz. Nach der Besichtigung der seit mehr als 850 Jahren alten Burg(sie wurde nie erobert oder niedergebrannt) geht es ins Tal zum Elzbach und wieder zurück auf den Mosel-Camino. Der Kreuzweg wird vom Shuttle-Bus genutzt führt nach oben zu einem herrlichen Aussichtspunkt auf die Burg. Auf dem Mosel-Camino geht es wieder zurück zu dem Steg über den Elzbach und danach Richtung Sauersmühle. Der Pfad führt meist entlang des Elzbaches auf schmalen Pfaden durch den Wald und zum Teil auch über Stege zur Sauersmühle. Von dort geht es über dem M5 durch die Felder wieder zum Startpunkt. Zu Recht ist die traumhafte Burg Eltz das ideale Bild für Postkarten, Briefmarken und auch den alten 500 DM Schein. Die Wanderung entlang des Elzbaches ist sehr schön und abwechslungsreich, und abseits des starken Besucherstromes von Parkplatz der Burg zur Burganlage im Tal.

Die Burg Virneburg ist die Ruine einer Höhenburg auf einer vom Nitzbach umflossenen 430 m ü. NN hohen Schieferkuppe über der gleichnamigen Gemeinde im Landkreis Mayen-Koblenz in Rheinland-Pfalz.
