Altenburg Bamberg - Germany (Part 1)
The first mention of the Altenburg was in 1109, although it is likely that it was built on the spot of an earlier palisade castle.
It first served as what is known is German as a Fliehburg. This is a castle that was not regularly inhabited, but served mainly for city defense as a place where local residents could flee to in times of danger.

The Altenburg is a castle that sits on the tallest of the seven hills of Bamberg, southern Germany, overlooking the town. It is located in Upper Franconia, a region in the state of Bavaria, and dates back to at least 1109.
In 1251, the Bamberg Fürstbischöfe, the sovereign bishops of Bamberg, acquired the castle. From 1305 to 1553, it was the residence of the bishops.
In 1553, during the Second Margrave War, the army of Albert Alcibiades, Margrave of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, burned the castle down. Afterward the castle was used as a prison for a while. In 1801, the Bamberg physician Adalbert Friedrich Marcus acquired the decaying castle and restored it from the ground up. The author E. T. A. Hoffmann, who was friends with Marcus, felt so drawn to the castle that he frequently stayed for a long time in one of the wall towers during the years 1808 to 1813.
In 1818, a society for the maintenance of the Altenburg, named the Altenburgverein e.V. Bamberg, received the castle. The society was founded by Anton von Grafenstein, the postmaster of Bamberg.
Today the castle is open for public tours. There is also a restaurant in the castle called the Restaurant Altenburg. The restaurant also manages the so-called Knights Hall, used mostly for events such as weddings or other celebrations. From 1952 to 1982, a brown bear named Poldi lived in a Zwinger (a defensive enclosure) in the castle. The Zwinger is still present, but today only houses a stuffed bear.

Timelapse driving through the town of Altenburg and Altenburg County. It is just a small town and pretty far off the major roads, but it is still an interesting one: for example the game of skat has it's origin there, the Leipzig-Altenburg Airport (formerly named Altenburg-Nobitz) is one of the oldest airports in Germany and despite of it's small size it only has international scheduled flights, and the famous supercar manufacturer Gumpert has it's headquarter in the town

Altenburg (Germany) Walking tour
It takes about 20 minutes from the station to the city center. It feels a little far away, but when you arrive, you can see the beautiful buildings and the wide squares. It is worth it.
The time is near dusk, and the sky is gradually darkening, but there is another tranquil atmosphere and another beauty.
It is very convenient to take the train back to Zwickau, and there are many trips.
See Bamberg, Germany in one day.
For a short time, Bamberg was the center of the Holy Roman Empire and today the city's churches, monasteries, and other old religious buildings are one of the main attractions.
Many are within one of Europe's largest intact old town centers which is ideal for walking. The narrow winding streets, half-timbered buildings and imposing squares make this a great place to visit.
Nine breweries, smoked beer, and the University of Bamberg are the flip side of the city. These give it a young vibe which you see on the streets.
We saw most of the city's attractions in one day with the exception of The Altenburg which is located on the highest of Bamberg's seven hills. It was constructed in the early 12th century and was the residence of Bamberg's bishops for 300 years. It was repaired in 1801 and today houses a popular restaurant.
Bamberg has a good range of accommodation and I urge you to stay close to the center so that you can walk to most sights. Many streets are pedestrianized so a car is not useful here. There are some buses and tours to places outside the main old center.

Neue Residenz Bamberg - Walking Tour, Bavaria, Germany
Neue Residenz Bamberg - Walking Tour, Bavaria, Germany
The four-winged complex of the New Residence was built in two stages. Firstly, the backwards two-winged section, which flanks the Obere Karolinenstrasse, was built from 1602 on in the Renaissance style under Prince Bishop von Gebsattel. Then, under Prince Bishop Lothar von Schönborn, the Baroque wings facing the Cathedral were built between 1697 and 1703 as a residence for the Prince Bishop by Leonhard Dientzenhofer.
The magnificent building complex has over 40 state rooms featuring stucco-work ceilings, furniture and tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries. Painted on the walls of the Imperial Hall are 16 larger than life-sized portraits of emperors, the work of Melchior Steidl.
The Elector's Rooms, the Prince-Bishop's Apartments and the gallery with Old German and Baroque paintings (Branch of the Bavarian State Galleries) are of particular interest and there is a fine view from the Rose Garden in the Residence courtyard. Prince Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn had this regularly symmetrical garden laid out by Balthasar Neumann. It is bordered with clipped lime trees and a dainty garden pavilion (completed in 1757) and with around 4,500 roses in over 70 beds it is filled in summer with fragrance and colour. Every year, the rosen garden serenades take place there.

Altenburg Bamberg
Jahrhundert.
