Places to see in ( Cologne - Germany ) Alter Markt
The Alter Markt is a historic marketplace near Cologne's city hall. The square is popular for its many cafés with outdoor terraces. The city's popular carnival celebrations start here at this square. During the Roman era a port was located here, at a tributary of the Rhine river. Over time the port became silted up and in the tenth century the tributary was completely filled in, after which the area became Cologne's central market square.
Initially the Alter Markt was connected with the Heumarkt square, and until the thirteenth century it formed one long marketplace. During the late Middle Ages the square was also the site of public executions and occasionally jousting tournaments were held here. Even though few squares in Cologne feel as historic as the Alter Markt, there are only two authentic historic houses, the 'zur Bretzel' and the 'zu Dorn', both on the east side of the square. The houses were built in the sixteenth century in a Renaissance style. The west side is dominated by the beautiful tower of the city hall.
At the middle of the Alter Markt stands the Jan-von-Werth-Brunnen, a fountain erected here in 1884 in honor of Jan von Werth, a successful general during the Thirty Years' War. The fountain, created by the German sculptor Wilhelm Albermann, shows the general on top of a tall pedestal. At the foot of the pedestal are allegorical statues of the Kölner Bauer and Kölner Jungfrau, representing valor and purity.
Less moralizing is the 'Kallendresser' (freely translated as gutter shitter), a sculpture of a man with his trousers down at the top of the facade of house no. 24. It was created in 1956 by the German sculptor Ewald Mataré. The bronze sculpture is a modern adaptation of a relief that before the war adorned a neighboring house no. 40). The origin of the sculpture is unclear, and some claim that it is a political statement towards the city hall opposite the house.

Cologne Christmas markets: BEST German Christmas breaks
It's Christmas, and who doesn't want to get away on German Christmas markets breaks? Cologne Christmas markets are known as some of the very best in Europe. There are seven big ones across the city and each one is unique.
Cologne was our pick of destinations from London because it is quite inexpensive to get to, only an hour's flight from London, and FULL of German Christmas market spirit.
We spent just a weekend here, but there's plenty to see and do in Cologne. You can actually walk between all of Cologne's German Christmas markets, although there's local transport and a festive train too, which takes you between the main four markets (Cathedral market, in front of the amazing Dom; Alter Markt next door; Harbour market up the road in front of the Chocolate Museum, and the gorgeous Angel market or Markt der Engel).
German Christmas markets breaks are perfect city escapes in December. It might be cold out but the mood is warm, and we're now fans of spiced wine, yummy. Cologne Christmas markets are renowned as offering some of Europe's best Christmas markets, and we can definitely understand why. Can't wait to go back again.
We take you on a tour here through a virtual map of Christmas markets in Cologne, and we've got a full guide on our site:

*********
Tünnes and Schäl (Colognian, Kölsch pronunciation: [ˈtʏnəs ʊn ˈɕɛˑɫ], are two figures from Hänneschen-Theater, the puppet theater of Cologne.
The name Tünnes is the Rheinish form of Anthony or Antonius. Tünnes is good natured and has a rural, farmer-type of common sense and cleverness.
Schäl can refer to the squint-eyes of the two figures or also a term meaning two-faced or iniquitous in the Kölsch dialect. Schäl is skinnier than Tünnes and wears a tailcoat.
History
Christoph Winters, the founder of the first Cologne Hänneschen puppet theater, introduced Tünnes to the ensemble in 1803. Schäl was introduced in 1847 in a competing theater run by Franz Millewitsch, an ancestor of actor Willy Millowitsch. Millewitsch placed the sly figure of Schäl with the good-natured Tünnes, clearly a nudge against his clever competitor Winters.
Culture
The two characters are embedded in the culture and humor of the city, apparently personifying many traits of people from Cologne, and there are many jokes referencing the figures.

Places to see in ( Cologne - Germany ) Heumarkt
The Heumarkt is the second largest square in Cologne and is located in the district Altstadt-Nord. The Heumarkt and its northern continuation Alter Markt formed a unit until the Middle Ages , only later was their separation. In the area of Heumarkt and Alter Markt lay during Roman times about 13 meters deep sole of a Rhine arm , so that this part was on an approximately 1000 meters long Rhine island. A find during the expansion of the Cologne subway brought in December 2007 from 12 meters depth, a transport ship ( Prahm ) from the Roman period between 50 and 100 after Christ.
His old name Inselmarkt reminds of the fact that he used to be on one of the city's offshore Rhine islands. The construction of the first market area on the Haymarket is based on Fund woods to the year 957 or shortly thereafter dated, after they had completely cleared this area of standing there buildings. Originally, Alter Markt and Heumarkt were a single marketplace under the name Alter Markt. Their separation was carried out by integration of the district Unterlan. Below the Marstor (porta Martis, kölsch Marsporz, demolished by council decision in 1545) he was called Hühnermarkt or Unterlan.
The house to the star is mentioned for the first time at the latest 1159, when a certain Hermann Stella acquires the property. 1163 mention the shrine books for the first time the house Minnefuss (today's No. 77), since 1351 Zabelbank called. Eiko von Halle appeared in 1184 in the shrine books as owner of the house Airsbach, which later carried out a name change in House Oversburg and lay on the malt mill. In 1247 the Linwaitmenger acquired the canvas house, followed in 1278 by the Wollweber with the Haus Aachen and in 1322 the cloth vendors with the neighboring Haus Oversburg. The Leinhaus is considered one of the city's first public department stores.
The Cologne Stock Exchange was able to move into the first own stock exchange building in the center of the Haymarket in 1580. Obviously it was just a demarcated, uncovered area. In the absence of 1650 to 1727 no news about the stock market, it was assumed a decline of the Cologne economy during that period.
