Off the beaten path tours in Lima with Alternative Peru (Video 33)
I've been getting questions about alternative things to do in Peru and the other day I had the opportunity to go on such a tour with the company Alternative Peru.
We visited the largest cemetery in South America, a small fair trade souvenir shop and ended our tour by having lunch at a local house there and walking around the community. I really enjoyed the tour and you'll hear more about it and the company in upcoming videos.

Theatre in the Ludoteca on our Full-day tour Lima
A couple of months ago a volunteer of La Casa de Panchita, an NGO that works with domestic workers in Lima, came to the Ludoteca in Pamplona Alta to create a theatre play together with the local children. They worked hard every week for months to write the scenario, practice their roles and build the decor. They came up with a very colorful and interesting play about their lives as child domestic workers: about the tasks they do, the risks they run and about how they feel about their situation.
Eveli, the coordinator of the Ludoteca, and one of our local guides, told us the play was a great success! It thought the children to speak in front of an audience about things that matter to them. They performed the play for their parents and siblings to share their experiences with them and make them realize what their lives are actually like. And also some international visitors came to watch together with Alternative Peru! On another occasion they went all the way to a school in another district to perform their play on a big stage in front of very many spectators.
An experience they will remember for a long time….
Want to visit the Ludoteca too and meet the children in person? Check out our tours on alternativeperu.org

12 FOODS YOU MUST EAT IN PERU 2020 | Lima & Cusco (Peruvian Food / Comida Peruana | Peru Vlog)
For the ultimate Peruvian food (comida peruana) experience there are 12 foods you must eat while visiting Peru, especially in Lima and Cusco. Since spending some time in Lima, Peru and Cusco, Peru we can certainly validate Peru as having some of the best food in the world in our Peruvian Food vlog 2020. Being able to experience these 12 amazing foods was not only delicious, but a true experience. We also include some of the best Lima street food as well as, more broadly, Peru street food, in this Peru vlog (Peru 2020).
Note: There are a couple of dishes we wished we tried in Peru while we were there recently, but due to our schedule we didn't have a chance to. The ones below with an * are the ones we didn't have in Peru.
- Lomo saltado - A Chifu ( Chinese ) influenced main dish that has mixed well into the Peruvian everyday culture. Tasty beef stir fry that has all the right ingredients making it the perfect hearty dish.
- Ceviche - is the seafood dish originated in Peru typically made from fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices, and spiced with ají, chili peppers or other seasonings including onions, salt, and cilantro. Pairs nicely with a crisp white wine.
- Ají de gallina *- A traditional and classic Peruvian food, and a dish nearly everyone loves is Ají de gallina, a chicken stew. We didn't get to try this dish in Peru but we did have it at a small traditional Peruvian restaurant by a chef from Lima Peru when we got back to Austin, TX. Pairs nicely with a cold Peruvian cerveza
- Carapulcra (con Sopa Seca con Arroz Verde) - Afro Peruvian cuisine stew of pork and dehydrated potatoes, with peanuts, aji panca and mirasol peppers, garlic, and other spices like clove.
- Alpaca - Some of the healthiest and most flavorful meats in the world. A mild meat which takes on the flavor of the dish. It is slightly salty, lean, high in protein with no fatty after taste.
- Cuy - alternately called Cobayo or conejillo de indias is a guinea pig. Taste like rabbit or chicken. Though difficult to accept for people in other countries who regard guinea pigs as pets, the cuy is a staple of Andean cuisine.
- Anticuchos - *Grilled Beef cow heart. It's a traditional Peruvian dish that date back to the 16th century.when they were first encountered by the Spanish conquistadors. Generally served on skewers and grilled on an open fire with incredible spices.
- Causa Limeña * - basically a layered potato chicken salad. If you like chicken or tuna salad, you'll love this dish. This wasn't our favorite. Very tasty but just reminded us of that chicken salad that mom made.
Desserts
- Alfajores - soft, delicate cookies made from cornstarch. What hold the cookie together is a creamy Dulce de leche. Topped with a little powdered sugar.
_ Picarones - Peruvian dessert that originated in Lima. It's main ingredients are squash and/or sweet potato. It is served in a doughnut form and covered with chancaca syrup.
Drinks
- Pisco Sour - alcoholic cocktail of Peru. The name comes from pisco, which is its base liquor, and the cocktail term sour, in reference to sour citrus juice and sweetener components. It's topped with an egg white layer.
- Chicha Morado - originated in the Andean regions of Perú and made from the purple corn

Thank you to Alfredo from Alternative Peru ( for taking us on this amazing tour of Chorrillos, Lima, Peru. This video is not sponsored, I paid for this tour, but I thought they did a great job and are doing great tours in and around Lima, and I would highly recommend them. #PeruvianFood #Lima #ceviche
Chorrillos, Lima, Peru - Located within Lima, yet it feels like a totally different city, is Chorrillos, a fishing village. There’s a community of fishermen, a boat harbor, fish and seafood market, and even a man who makes fishing boats by hand for the village. It was fantastic to walk around the village, the fish market, and take a quick boat ride to get started.
We then continued walking through Chorrillos to a Peruvian Creole (Typically of Spanish descent, but mixed with Indigenous and Afro-Peruvian cultures), family who raises roosters and also cooks insanely delicious Peruvian seafood.
Here are the Peruvian food seafood dishes we ate:
Mixed ceviche - Raw fish, squid, scallops
Tiradito - Sashimi cut raw fish, yellow pepper sauce
Ceviche - Peruvian sole ceviche
Sudado - Peruvian fish stew
It was an amazing meal with some of the most complex and delicious ceviche I had during my entire trip to Peru, and some of the best Peruvian food I’ve tried. The view and setting were also fantastic.
Price - I paid $65 USD per person for this tour with Alternative Peru ( that included everything - guide, boat ride, and food. Highly recommended. Thanks Alfredo for an amazing day in Lima!

Sandboarding in Lima Peru
Sandboarding in Peru is an amazing activity for all the adventure lovers out there. With our half-day tour from Lima, you won’t even need a lot of time to enjoy this activity. In comparison to the famous Huacachina Oasis (4+ hours away from Lima), where you can also do sand boarding, Lima’s dunes are only a little over an hour away.
The best about it all is that you will feel like you have reserved the entire dune landscape for yourself as there is nobody around. In Huacachina, it feels like a new tour starts every 5 minutes and the entire place is already overrun by tourists.
During this tour, you will enter the dunes in an off-road jeep with a professional driver that will show you what it means to have fun in the dunes. When you get to the sandboarding dunes, you will start practicing at a smaller dune with our professional instructor so that you can get the hang of it before taking on the bigger dunes.
After 2-3 trials, you will most likely have gotten the hang of it. And if not, you can also sit or even lay on the sand board! Once you have reached the bottom of the dune, you will be picked up by the jeep again to go to the starting point of the dune. You will repeat that around 3 times, so you have plenty of time to practice and to get used to doing sandboarding in Lima.
In case the weather is good and you feel like it, we can make a short stop at the beach. In case you want to do that, make sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel.
If you have snowboarded before you will definitely have an advantage but you will also surely love this new experience. Please make sure to bring your sunscreen, as Lima’s sun can get really intense. And other than that, just enjoy sandboarding in Lima!

Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Cusco // Alternative Rainbow Mountain Tour // 50-minute hike
The Alternative Rainbow Mountain Tour in Cusco is one of the top things to do in Cusco. Since Cusco’s rainbow mountains have been discovered a couple of years ago, they have been gained increasing popularity. However, you should know that his is not the typical tour to the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, but the alternative to the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain (for more info on the comparison check out The Vinicunca trek and the typical rainbow mountain are beautiful (especially when you connect the tour with the red valley as we do), but due to its popularity and accessibility it has become insanely crowded.
The Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain tour is a short 1-hour hike (we’ve also had clients hike up in 30 minutes), which is nothing hardcore and also doable for “normal” travellers, not just for experienced hikers. The most important thing is to get acclimated to Cusco’s altitude in order to avoid the so called altitude sickness (for tips check out In general, we recommend arriving to Cusco 2-3 days before doing a high-altitude trek so your body can get used to the altitude.
The surrounding nature of the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is beautiful and you will not see just one rainbow mountain but three, that’s why some people call this tour “Tres Rainbows tour”. And the best about it all? There are no large tourist groups around (we promise!). Unlike the Vinicunca trek, where the masses go, the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is still a rather new and untouched attraction.
During our tour, we always try to organize a llama or an alpaca that accompanies our travellers during the tour. This has become possible through our collaboration with the local community ( paying them accordingly for this service (unfortunately many agencies take their service for granted and don’t pay the locals at all). You will also learn a lot more about their daily lifestyle and their traditions and customs. This Rainbow Mountain tour offers a unique combination, as you get to know the impressive Andean mountain landscape and the local culture at the same time.
Are you ready for an authentic experience with no crowds around? This tour is amazing for everybody, no matter if you’re a solo traveler, a couple, a family or a group of friends travelling together.

Sandboarding in Lima Peru
Sandboarding in Peru is without a doubt one of the most adventurous activities you can do. Our half-day tour from Lima ( is a great option if you want to experience something extraordinary and if you still have some time left in Peru’s capital.
In comparison to Huacachina (4+ hours away from Lima), the most popular option for sandboarding in Peru, you won’t be surrounded by large tourist groups and you’ll enjoy professional equipment instead of cheap wooden sandboards. You will feel like you reserved the entire desert for yourself as there won't be anyone around. More than that, your instructor is a former sandboarding champion so you will literally learn from some of the best! For more info on why Chilca (1 hour away from Lima) is the best option for Sandboarding, please check out or detailed blog post (
During the tour, you will enter the desert in a professional 4x4 jeep and have some fun in the dunes before starting to sandboard. We’ll start practicing at a small dune until you get the hang of it. Once you’re ready, we’ll move on to larger dunes and board down. You don’t necessarily have to stand on the board, you can also sit or lay down. The most important thing is that you have fun and this will be guaranteed!
In the summer months (January-March), we can make a short stop at the beach on the way back if you want to. If so, make sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel.

Visiting relatives in the outskirts of Lima, Peru (Vlog 2)
Hi guys!
In this video I share with you all my trip to Villa Maria Del Triunfo which is this district that's really far away from where most tourists stay in Lima and I went to visit my father's side of the family for my aunt's birthday. I just wanted to show you guys a side of Lima most foreigners don't get to visit because they mainly stay in the nicer, cleaner, safer areas of Lima and don't get to experience this kind of stuff. Also, I wanted to show you a bit about Peruvian culture and how we celebrate birthdays but my silly phone didn't record the music we danced to during the party :(
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed the video!

PERU: ULTIMATE San Pedro Market + STREET FOOD Tour in Cusco | Peru 2019 Vlog
San Pedro Market in Cusco, Peru as some of the best street food, groceries and incredible gifts. #Cusco #Peru #PeruvianFood #streetfood
The San Pedro Market in Cusco, Peru is very close to Plaza De Armas. It's about a 10 minute walk.
Peru is know for having some of the world’s great cuisines, and we were so excited have a chance to visit Peru to learn about and taste the food. In this video, get ready for an ultimate tour of San Pedro Market and all her glory ..including her street food.
Here’s everything included in this tour:
*** I mispronounced the fruit smoothie I had it's not Lume it's Lúcuma, or in Quechua Lucma which is a native Andean fruit, with a flavor that is deep and reminiscent of meat or some say sweet potato like, while still sweet and fruity. Peruvian government has named it a signature fruit of Peru.
San Pedro Market - If you love vegetable markets, I don’t think anywhere else in Cusco is as colorful, energetic, and vibrant. This place is unreal we fully enjoyed walking around and seeing the diversity of ingredients from around Peru all in one busy wholesale Market.
Breakfast and Coffee - We can't remember the name of the shop but there's a section specifically for breakfast and coffee. Just ask for the cream sandwich made from the milk. They'll know what you're talking about.
Smoothies - There is a section dedicated to smoothies. Many stands worked by women who will basically shake a menu in your face to get you to order from their stand which all had numbers in front.. It's pretty incredible how this is done. The smoothie I had was made with the Amazon fruit called Lucma, con leche. Dave had a mango and passion fruit smoothie. Both extremely fresh tasting and delicious. Highly recommended.
Ceviche- This is one of the most common of all Peru street food. Ceviche is caught daily and should always be consumed by early afternoon. We were impressed with how fresh tasting the fish was. We didn't have ceviche at the San Pedro Market but a place called Cevicheria & Tiburoncito was pretty busy so we're assuming it's good.
Caldos de Gallina
The chicken soup they served here was huge. They put all kinds of tasty ingredients and spices along with the chicken and sometimes they even serve that chicken with the feet. So if you don't want to see chicken feet in your soup then go ahead and tell them when you place your order that you don't want the feet. Maybe you like the feet. We don't.
Textiles - There are so many stations of textiles for you to chose. Don't be afraid to negotiate on the prices. They shops all start their prices high, especially if they know you're a gringo. So definitely do some negotiating. They totally expect that.
In this video we'll give you some great tips and advice if you and/or family plan to visit San Pedro Market.

PERU: Huaraz | Trekking Laguna 69 & Laguna Churup
After 3 weeks in Ecuador I moved on to Peru. I spent a couple days in Mancora but didn’t do any filming. From there I went to Huaraz with Maiken and Luis. We did the popular 1 day trek to Laguna 69 (elevation 4600m).
The second day Maiken and I walked from Huaraz up to a hostel in the mountain (The Hof Hostel) where we camped for the night (and froze!). The next day we hiked about 3 hours up to Laguna Churup (elevation 4450m).
ABOUT ME: After 6 months in Asia I (Ryan) decided I wanted to travel more so I flew from my home in Trinidad & Tobago to Colombia to start backpacking South America. I do these videos as a way of documenting my travels so I have something to look back on in the future. I plan to upload 1-2 videos per month. Feel free to subscribe and follow along.

UPDATE: Read the blog post here for more details:
This is a compilation of clips from my week in (and around) Huaraz, Peru in October of 2015. Huaraz is a destination for outdoorsy folks around the world, and it's very well known for some of its multi-day treks. I went trekking, climbing, and ice climbing in the area.
