Hundreds of Princess Diana's admirers passed through the gates of her ancestral home on Wednesday to view the mementos of her life.
The Althorp estate in Northamptonshire has opened to the public -- on what would have been Diana's 37th birthday.
Visitors were also able to see the lake island where the princess was buried nearly a year ago.
They also toured a new museum built by Diana's brother, Earl Spencer.
On the day that would have been her 37th birthday, visitors flocked to see Diana's schoolgirl's letters, the stunning silk dress of her royal marriage, and the celebrity princess' high-fashion outfits.
All exhibits were in a new museum built by Diana's brother, Earl Spencer at the Althorp estate in rural Northamptonshire and open to paying visitors for the next two months.
Earl Spencer mingled with the first visitors to the museum that is housed in a converted stable block.
Like nearly everything associated with Diana, the opening of the family home has been controversial.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper recently described the earl as a lost soul now tethering himself to the memory of his lost sister.
One item on display in the imposing stable block is a first draft of Spencer's speech at Diana's funeral on September 6, 1997 in Westminster Abbey in London.
He spoke bluntly about his sister's frustration as a royal wife and his fear that palace life would stifle the souls of her two sons.
Displays in the museum also include personal effects from Diana's childhood, including her school uniform, candy box and school reports as well as family photographs and home movies.
The collection of home videos shows Diana as a child dancing and playing in the gardens of Althorp.
Daily visitors are limited to 2,500 people with pre-purchased tickets.
Spencer has sold nearly 150-thousand tickets - called invitations to visit - at prices ranging from 5 pounds (8 U-S dollars) for children to 7.50 pounds (12 U-S dollars) for senior citizens and 9.50 pounds (15 U-S dollars) for adults.
Earl Spencer says profits will go to charity.
Visitor facilities at Althorp include a restaurant and a shop selling a range of souvenirs associated with Diana.
But for many, the point of the visit was the ornamental lake and the island where Diana was buried in a private family ceremony after her death on August 31, 1997 in a Paris car crash.
A walkway leads from the museum to the lake, where Diana's grave on the island is marked by a large urn carved in Portland stone.
Visitors cannot visit the grave site but can view the island from the water's edge.
There is a classical temple by the lake that is a memorial to the princess.
Many people placed flowers and cards there - below a plaque paying tribute to Diana.
Residents in the nearby village of Great Brington have expressed concern that the lure of Diana's grave would turn the area into an English version of Graceland, the home and grave of Elvis Presley.

PRINCESS Diana fans are flocking to a crypt in Northamptonshire amid claims the body of the princess was secretly moved from her family's estate in a surprisingly royal conspiracy.
Princess Diana died ion August 31, 1997 in a car crash in Paris and was laid to rest on September 6 of that same year at her family estate Althorp in Northamptionshire.
But royal fans from around the world claim Diana’s body was moved to a “secret” location, according to the Daily Star.
Dozens of visitors continue to pay tribute to Prince William and Prince Harry's mother at the church, St Mary the Virgin in Great Brington, Northamptionshire, where conspiracy theorists claim she was buried in the crypt.
One visitor from Australia paid tribute to the ‘People’s Princess’ as they wrote: “Beautiful resting place, RIP Diana, with your family.”

Around two-and-half thousand people visited the last resting place of Diana, Princess of
Wales, on as her childhood home was opened for the first time since her death.
The visitors also had their first glimpse of a new museum built in the Princess's
memory in a converted stable block on the Northamptonshire estate.
Most of the visitors said they were moved and delighted by their experience and praised Diana's family for creating a fitting tribute to the princess.
Queues started forming outside the gates of Althorp Park, near Northamptonshire, about two hours before the scheduled opening time.
It was the first time the estate was opened to visitors and the grand occasion coincided with what would have been the 37th birthday of Princess Diana.
Eager to see the final resting place of Diana, scores of people had pre-purchased their tickets - delighted to be the first members of the public to be granted access to the home of the late Princess of Wales.
The visitors were greeted by a massive media scrum.
Hoardes of journalists, cameramen and photographers from around the world were outside the gates, waiting for the crowds to arrive.
Police were on hand to hold them at bay.
Many people had arrived with bunches of flowers in a touching tribute to the woman who was widely regarded as one of Britain's most popular royals.

Inside Althorp Park, visitors were able to see the island where the Princess is buried and browse through a museum which documents the life of Diana - from her childhood to her untimely death.
The exhibition includes many of Diana's outfits - including her famed wedding dress.
For many people, visiting Althorp was more of a pilgrimage than a visit and police were on hand to ensure the experience for many was a sacred event.
But police admit the huge media contingent got in the way.
For the Spencer family, Wednesday's opening was an important measure of public reaction - in particular to the Diana museum - after criticism that the estate was trying to cash in on the Princess' death.
The museum's designer, Rasshed Dil, said the entire family was concerned about the museum and its overall appeal.

It's a very difficult thing to do because the memories are so vivid and so near and also everyone is quite emotionally involved still and so it's actually quite difficult to separate your feelings from the matter but we've really tried very hard to do that.

Olney is a market town and civil parish in the Borough of Milton Keynes, South East England. It is also part of the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire, with a population of around 6,500 people. It lies on the River Great Ouse, very close to the borders with Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and equidistant from Northampton, Bedford and Milton Keynes. It has easy access to the M1 at Junction 14 (approximately seven miles) and fast train links to London from Milton Keynes Central or Bedford (each approximately twelve miles distant). It is a popular tourist destination, perhaps best known for the Olney Pancake Race and for the Olney Hymns by William Cowper and John Newton.
First mentioned as Ollanege (Olla's island) in 932, the town has a history as a lace-making centre. The place, later called Olnei was held in 1086 AD by Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances as its overlord, according to the Domesday Book. During the English Civil War, Olney was the site of the Battle of Olney Bridge.
In the late 18th century, William Cowper and John Newton collaborated here on what became known as the Olney Hymns. John Newton, author of the hymn Amazing Grace, was curate of Olney and is buried here. His guest was William Cowper (English poet and hymnodist (1731–1800)). The town has the Cowper and Newton Museum dedicated to them. The museum was adapted from Cowper's former residence, which was given to the town in 1905 by the publisher William Hill Collingridge (who had been born in the house). Newton was succeeded as curate in Olney by the biblical commentator Thomas Scott (1747–1821).
The hamlet of Olney Park Farm to the north of the town of Olney derives its name from a park established in 1374 by Ralph, Third Baron Bassett of Sapcote in Leicester. In 1861 it attained civil parish status, but was subsequently incorporated into an enlarged Olney civil parish around 1931. Olney formerly had its own railway station on the Bedford—Northampton line, but the line was closed in 1962.
The A509 road runs into the wide High Street bordered by historic town houses. The Market Place is the site of a general market on Thursdays and a farmers' market on the first Sunday each month. The vast majority of Olney shops are independents, attracting shoppers from further afield to find the galleries, antique, rug and furniture sellers, as well as boutiques for interior design, fashionable clothes and perfumery. There are restaurants, pubs, cafes and takeaways offering a wide variety of British and international food.
As Olney continues to expand, with new housing estates, a secondary-level satellite campus, Ousedale School has opened for pupils from year 7 to year 11. Olney Infants School is for reception to year 2 children and Olney Middle School takes the children up to year 6, at the age of 11. The route for an A509 by-pass may continue to be an issue for the residents of the town, as are the various wind farm sites proposed in the locality.

Earl Charles Spencer, brother of Diana, Princess of Wales welcomed the first visitors Wednesday (01/07) to view the island site where Diana is burried. The gates at Althorp Estates opened half an hour early to hundreds of the expected 152,000 ticket holders who arrived Wednesday to pay homage to Diana, ten months after her death in a Paris car crash. Althorp Estate opened its gates to the public on the day that would have been Diana's 37th birthday.

Phone lines were jammed on Monday as hundreds of people try to get tickets to go to the grave site of Diana, Princess of Wales - despite high prices.
The burial site at the Spencer family estate in Althorp will be opened to ticket holders over a brief spell this summer.
Tickets for just over 150-thousand places cost nine pounds fifty a piece (15 U-S dollars) a price which many say is too steep.
Proceeds will go to Diana's memorial fund, which supports her favourite charities.
Tickets to Althorp, Diana's last resting place, are now on sale in the U-K.
Earl Spencer, Diana's brother, has set up 200 telephone lines that will take calls 24 hours a day to sell advance-purchase tickets to the family estate in Northamptonshire county.
Officials running the estate said the phone lines were jammed by hundreds of callers within the first hour of opening on Monday morning.

It has been pretty overwhelming. In the first 45 minutes, we had over 700 calls. But we are asking the public to please be patient and to persevere and to please keep calling over the next few days. The line will be open for many weeks, and we look forward to hearing from them.

A maximum of 25-hundred visitors each day will be able to see the island but not set foot on it.
A temple at the lake's edge is being restored and dedicated to Diana's memory for the public to lay flowers and pay tribute to her.
But one of the highlights is expected to be Diana's wedding dress, which might be exhibited at a museum - converted from former stables on the grounds of the estate.
The exhibition will also include family photographs and film footage from her childhood.

And that is being converted to house a museum dedicated to Diana. And it will focus on her Spencer childhood. But as well as that, it will bring us up to date on Diana as the very modern woman that she was.
