Death Road Biking Tour in La Paz - Bolivia | Altitude Travel
The Death Road is one of the most unique activities Bolivia has to offer. Book Now:
Where else in the world can you cycle from snow-covered Andean Mountains all the way down to the entrance of the amazon jungle in a just a few hours? Internationally known for being the highlight of one’s trip when in South America, this exciting bike ride exposes some of Bolivia’s most breath-taking landscapes, beautiful mountains and sparkling waterfalls.
The Death Road, or “Camino de la Muerte” in Spanish, was cut on the side of the Cordillera Oriental Mountain chain in the 1930s and stretches for about 70km from La Paz to Coroico, connecting the Yungas(an ecoregion of the Amazon rain forest northeast of La Paz) to the administrative capital. From La Paz, the road climbs to around 4700 meters above sea level (over 15 thousand feet) at La Cumbre–in the Altiplano highlands- before descending to 1300 meters (4 thousand feet) to the Yungas, allowing travelers to experience an incredible change in both temperature and landscapes.
Surrounded by mountainous terrain and high precipices, the road gained its fame and name due to its danger and adrenaline-rush potential. In the 2000s, the modernization of the road and construction of an alternative one diverted the traffic and allowed for more safe conditions. Nowadays, this electrifying activity is suitable for both confident beginners and experienced mountain bikers of all ages.
As one of the highest ranked biking operators in Bolivia, at Altitude Biking we pride ourselves on providing the best in security, professionalism and fun. Our service includes safe vehicles, best-quality equipment and bikes, highly skilled English speaking tour guides 1 every 5 passengers, trained in Advanced First Aid, Mechanics and Rope Rescue- and fast contingency plans in place for any occurrence. [Going To Uyuni Salt Flat and Experiencing HIGH ALTITUDE SICKNESS] Bolivia Travel Vlog #1
I traveled from Miami - Bogota - La Paz to Uyuni. On the way in La Paz, I had a sudden altitude sickness. I was feeling dizzy and disoriented. It was like standing on a moving boat. But with the help of oxy gas it was all fine. This is the first part of experiencing high altitude sickness during the trip to Uyuni, Bolivia. How to Prevent and Treat Altitude Sickness in Peru (From Cusco)
Most people who visit Machu Picchu ( go through the beautiful city of Cusco, which is over 11,000 feet above sea level. Altitude sickness can be an issue in either place so I made this video on how to prevent and treat altitude sickness, with the Cusco Cathedral in the background. I had put off my trip to Peru for years due to the fact that I suffered altitude sickness once before in the U.S. and didn't want to go through that again. However, even though it did hit me in Peru, it was not as nearly as bad as I anticipated, due to the precautions I took.

High Altitude Trekks & Climbs. Bolivia. ENJOY BOLIVIA - Njbol Travel
If you are looking for adventure in South America, we suggest to visit the following:
National Park Sajama
In a corner of the Altiplano, due west of Oruro is the sacred mountain of volcano Sajama, highest peak in Bolivia and long revered by the ancient Uru peoples. A place of great natural beauty, it is a favorite with climbers and people who wish to explore this remote and mystical landscape. and a rainy season in the summer. The rivers in the area belong to the inward flowing high plateau river system dominated by the Sajama. Important volcanic cones, like Mount Sajama and the Payachatas are located in the park, together with several lagoons and high lying Andean marshes, where hardy and silicified grasses and a variety of rosette-shaped plants are to be found.
National park Condoriri
The Condoriri National Park, located on the Royal Mountain Range. displays a great natural potential. Beautifully preserved, it is tucked away in the mountains dotted with crystal clear mountain lakes, a product of the constant thawing of the glaciers. Observe stunning ice stalactites forming their unique shapes down cascading waterfalls.
The Condoriri, condor head in Aymara, is a group of 13 equally attractive peaks, where the Nevado Condoriri is the highest and most imposing mountain in the group. From the arrival in La Paz we can already recognize its summit with its glaciers. To the west we find the Pico Austria (Austria peak), a light ascent allows us a magnificent overview of the Cordillera Real, the high plains of the Altiplano and Lake Titicaca.
This trek ascends completely solitary mountains; the total silence of the mountains is only disturbed when passing llamas break up the ice. From these altitudes you can observe the silvery shimmer of light reflected by the worlds highest navigable lake, while trekking in the company of numerous llamas, the occasional alpaca and many smaller animals such as viscachas, lizards, ibises and gulls.
Condoriri 5.700m / 18.700ft classic route
The Condoriri area is a particularly attractive zone to practice climbing. Although the summits are not as high as other peaks, the variety of different terrains encountered and skills needed makes for a very exciting experience. This itinerary also allows you to enjoy climbing even with less experience and train your self on ice to gradually gain more and more technical knowledge and skills.
Mount Illimani 6.439m / 21.125ft classic route
The Illimani is the highest and southern most peak in the Royal range, Hans Ertel, German natural scientist writing in Mountain World 1953, described Illimani as one of the most beautiful and impressive groups of peaks in South America. The normal route is the easiest route on the mountain and it gets you to its highest point.
Mount Huayna Potosi 6.082m / 19.974ft classic route
Huayna Potosí is the easiest 6000er in the world, but its altitude is a real Challenge, The original name is Caca-Aca given by the native indigenes. There are over seven routes to climb all of them with a different grade difficulty. The first climbers were two Germans in May 1919, Rudolf Dienst and Adolf Schulze.
Illampu 6.342m / 20.807ft classic route
The Illampu is one of the hardest and demanding climbs in the Cordillera Real (Royal Mountain Range), you will find physically and technically challenge to overpass in this adventure. This program should only be attempted by those in very good shape and with experience on ice. Beside all this, it is a spectacular climb and you will enjoy it without any doubt.
Sorata Laguna Glaciar (Glaciar Lagoon)
Sorata, a beautiful village located in a lovely valley (2700 m.a.s.l.) on the foothills of Mount Illampu (6400 m.a.s.l.) it is the highest mountain on the Royal Mountain Range. This village Sorata is well know as one of the most beautiful spots of Bolivia, with its semi tropical climate with temperatures between 14 ° and 24 °C (Celsius degrees). From Sorata we start our trekking to Laguna Glaciar, set in between the 2 mountains of Illampu (6356m) and Ancohuma (6427m), it is a beautiful lagoon that is fed by a massive hanging glaciar an amazing place. Laguna Chilate, is our camp for the trek, is also beautiful and a popular day hike from Sorata. This trek gives you the opportunity to get really close to the mountains and the glaciers.

Bolivia - Pedestrian Day, La Paz
There are two reasons why you should not take tak the bike to move around in La Paz. The first is the altitude of the city and the sheer endless up and downs you would have to manage in the streets. The second reason is that the majority of drivers in the andean countries are not used to watch out for cyclists. So it is a good idea to use the occasion and do what you always wanted to do in the middle of highly frequented a street. Each year there is the dia peatonal - pedestrian day. Locals play football, do music or sell stuff in the middle of the town centre. As a tourist, you do not want to miss the colourful project.

Is The Highest City In The World Worth Visiting? | La Paz + El Alto
The highest city in the world is officially La Paz, often thought of as turned touristy we decided to see if it was worth visiting. La Paz and El Alto city, right next door, sit in amongst mountains and cable cars connect the cities and areas within.
We stumble across the largest market in South America, see the real witches market and learn about indigenous culture in El Alto. In La Paz, we learn about the infamous San Pedro Prison, see the touristy witches markets (it doesn't compare to El Alto!) and almost get arrested!
In this video we didn't film too much direct to camera as the local people were not too keen on filming so we remained respectful, and also getting over our illness we were not feeling the best.
We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!
Join as we learn how to navigate this continent and this world, with a backpack on and camera set to record. Our day to day experiences, the highs and the low. REAL backpacking, hostels, transport.
